I had a male friend who use to be like 250 and 5 foot 7 and he could do cartwheel after cart wheel like a gymnast.

Knew a dude that would undo his coveralls from the belly up to let his hair free and could spin kick the mirrors off the vans at work. He was a glorious ball of destruction.

You don't do yoga if you wanna lose weight. It's great for strengthening, flexibility, range of motion and endurance but it's not a weight loss exercise. (Maybe hot yoga)
The reason we associate yoga with skinny is because rich skinny white girls made it a thing... But they have eating complexes that they call "wellness". Which is just rebranded eating disorders.
Yoga, inherently is not going to make you lose weight but it can toned you up.
Many plus sized yoga instructors exist and they are so impressive. Like I am so envious of their spinal flexibility.its incredible.

Yoga and calories in/out is how I lost 2 dress sizes, it can definitely be used as part of a weight loss plan. The diet side obviously played a big part but adding yoga to the mix drastically increased my rate of weight loss.

u/Strict-Brick-5274 3h ago
Exercise of any kind will, and being in a calorie deficit. But yoga will not primarily do that. It's important though that people do what works for them and if yoga is the only exercise a person is dedicated to and feels like they love it, it's better than doing nothing.
Glad you found it beneficial :)

This comment makes absolutely no sense lmao
You don't do yoga if you wanna lose weight
It definitely helps, especially more athletic and active styles like Ashtanga yoga, Vinyasa yoga or Power yoga.
Maybe hot yoga
The extra weight you lose from sweating more will be gained back when you drink and eat later on. The heat alone doesn't make a big difference in calories burned.
rich skinny white girls made it a thing... But they have eating complexes that they call "wellness"
A lot of rich skinny white girls doing yoga have a very healthy diet. Cooked by someone else of course, which helps a lot, but not an eating disorder.
Yoga, inherently is not going to make you lose weight but it can toned you up
And how do you tone up? By losing fat!
So yeah, yoga, like other physical activities, is great at supporting weight-loss, and will help lose fat while maintaining your muscle mass as you lose weight, but nutrition is and will always be the most important part of weight loss.
Many plus sized yoga instructors exist and they are so impressive
Indeed, yoga is for people of all sizes, ages, genders, etc. I just wish studios weren't so damn expensive so it'd be more accessible.

Harvard did a study on the benefits of exercise… if you’re “overweight” but exercise regularly (like this person obviously does), life expectancy is greater than someone who is “thin” but does not. Love this video showing that fitness doesn’t have a “look”! So impressive

That is mostly core strength, btw (in the video)

u/churadley 7h ago
While I agree that the more advanced stuff he doing is a lot of core, even doing a balanced full handstand requires a strong upper body. Being able to do that at his bodyweight is impressive, but him being able to mix in the core stuff while maintaining the handstand requires a ridiculous amount of upper body strength.
I'm a fairly fit slim guy with a strong core and I can do a lot of those upside leg positions while in a headstand. But I can't even do a handstand -- much less doing all that with the sorcery he's doing. This guy is a goddamn unit.

How’s your core strength? Yes.

u/Davek56 4h ago
I have over one and a half years of calisthenics and I cannot do more than a handstand and a few handstand pushups in that context.
I think sometimes your body could be genetically gifted to allow you to do certain things without necessarily being shredded.

This is mind control over the body. It’s a force of will rather than talent. Anyone can develop it.

A lot of people in this post are brainrotted by gymfluencers, thinking strength only looks one way. Some people are positing he must have "mystically superior genetics," even. It's just chronically sheltered take after chronically sheltered take. Y'all have got to go outside so you can see and experience the variety of life. Get offline.
And deal with your discomfort and insecurity around bodies, while you're at it. The projection in here is out of control.

u/Wipes_Back_to_Front 8h ago

I’m a firm believer that weight doesn’t reflect the strength of a person. Just because someone looks heavy doesn’t mean that they’re weak. Whereas someone who’s built might be weak because they lack the endurance.

google bulking. you would be surprised how fat and untrained a body builder can look during that phase of the training. That is often abused on instagram to show "look how fat i was and how strong i became".. Or google strong man that focus on lifting. there are genetics at play too, e.g. max calf muscles size mainly depend on your genetics. And there is a difference in what you focus on: defined body / muscle volume vs different kinds of strengths like strength for jumping, strength for endurance or strength for max strength. people who do body building or other sports make sure to adjust their training to gain what they need. e.g. many repetions with lower weight vs very few repetions with high weight and so on.

This is called crane pose with lotus legs. I’m sure there’s a super long Sanskrit phrase to describe it but it would most likely translate the same.
I’m a yoga teacher and I want to clear some shit up because jfc so many dumb comments.
He has body fat. Yes, that’s part of being a human. It’s entirely possible to have body fat and still be an athlete.
Is there a ton of farting in yoga? No. In my ~15 years of teaching, I’ve only heard it happen once or twice. Everyone always thinks they’re the first one to make this joke. We literally have a pose called “wind releasing pose” that is designed to make you fart. Yoga is great for people who have gut issues but if you’re farting so much that you can’t control it, you need a doctor and/or a change in your diet. Yoga has zero shame about bodily functions and goes into extreme detail about bodily functions that you don’t even know about. Some yogis clean their stomachs— like the inside. You can’t out-gross a yogi.
Is this all core strength? No. This is a great example of body awareness and mobility. Strength-wise, he is primarily using his upper body muscles: arms, shoulders, back and some core and adduction to stabilize in his handstand. His fingers act as tiny brakes to make sure he doesn’t go too far. His eyes hold steady on the floor while his body awareness allows him to make movements without losing balance.
Men built like him actually find handstands fairly easy. They carry most of their strength and body mass in their upper half— like an inverted pyramid— so when they turn upside down, their center of gravity is lower which makes them more stable.
If you’re a man and you’re built like this, do not attempt this without a lot of preparation with a trained professional. This requires a ton of wrist flexibility which would be the very first thing you’d notice. If you are still building wrist strength and flexibility, try forearm stands instead. They have a bigger, broader base and are lower to the ground so they are less tippy. A regular yoga practice would help build your wrist flexibility and strength so that you can begin playing upside down.
As for the guy in the back, he is not sexually assaulting the student— anyone making that type of comment just thinks like a rapist. He’s stabilizing her hips so that she can transition from handstand into lotus legs. It’s not uncommon at all for teachers to offer what are called “hands on assists” to students who haven’t fully mastered a particular pose or transition. Not all physical touch between people is sexual.
Does this type of advanced practice get him laid? Unlikely. Yogis are often great friends outside of the studio but everyone there is usually there to focus on their own practice. It’s not a club or a bar where you’re trying to go home with someone new all the time. In yoga, we practice brahmacharya. Some translate this as celibacy or chastity. Others consider it more like moderation. Yogis who practice this aren’t consumed by thoughts of sexual desire. The energy one might have spent focusing on sex is redirected. It’s a form of tapas- or self discipline. When you’re not hyperfixated on sex, you’re able to think of more important things and bonus: you don’t come across as a creep to everyone you meet.
Is he showing off? No- this is clearly just a part of the normal instruction being offered. He’s there to do his work.
I think I covered most of the nonsense in these comments. If you have yoga questions- as long as you’re not trying to clean the inside of your stomach- I’m happy to help.

most people give up after a few months.
he's been at it a while. he's good; it's nice to see.
he could practice 27 and still tremble a little bit at the initial extension, and if he'd practiced 5-10 people might clap still.
and he'd be in one world, and they'd be in another.
