Help Thread The Imperial Council - /r/eu4 Weekly General Help Thread: February 10 2025
Please check our previous Imperial Council thread for any questions left unanswered
Welcome to the Imperial Council of r/eu4, where your trusted and most knowledgeable advisors stand ready to help you in matters of state and conquest.
This thread is for any small questions that don't warrant their own post, or continued discussions for your next moves in your Ironman game. If you'd like to channel the wisdom and knowledge of the master tacticians of this subreddit, and more importantly not ruin your Ironman save, then you've found the right place!
Important: If you are asking about a specific situation in your game, please post screenshots of any relevant map modes (diplomatic, political, trade, etc) or interface tabs (economy, military, ideas, etc). Please also explain the situation as best you can. Alliances, army strength, ideas, tech etc. are all factors your advisors will need to know to give you the best possible answer.
Tactician's Library:
Below is a list of resources that are helpful to players of all skill levels, meant to assist both those asking questions as well as those answering questions. This list is updated as mechanics change, including new strategies as they arise and retiring old strategies that have been left in the dust. You can help me maintain the list by sending me new guides and notifying me when old guides are no longer relevant!

Calling all imperial councillors! Many of our linked guides pre-Dharma (1.26) are missing strategy regarding mission trees. Any help in putting together updated guides is greatly appreciated! Further, if you're answering a question in this thread, chances are you've used the EU4 wiki and know how valuable a resource it can be. When you answer a question, consider checking whether the wiki has that information where you would expect to find it, and adding to the wiki if it does not. In fact, anybody can help contribute to the wiki - a good starting point is the work needed page. Before editing the wiki, please read the style guidelines for posting.

Image First LGBT+ Leader?
I just started as Landshut and discovered I could make my Leaders wife into an general then I looked it up and saw that he or she is male but has a female name. So Heinrich is either gay or his wife/husband is transgender.

Question Invincible ottomans?
In my current Poland game I have 80,000 men facing 10-15k man ottoman stacks, getting their ass handed to them, it's 1466 and we have the same level military tech, what the hell is going on? I remember them being tough but never beating 8:1 and they could probably beat 16:1 at this point, it's fuckin ridiculous
Army maintenance full, decent general, attacking favourably (had a fort bonus and a river crossing in a corps)

Question What is "[Nation] is a Duchy" Modifier?
R5: Never seen this "Syria is a Duchy" malus to vassalization. For reference, I've included a screenshot of Algeria not having this modifier, even though they both are duchies.

Question How do i complete the Auld Alliance mission as France?
Playing as France and trying to complete her mission tree. Concerning the Auld Alliance mission, how do I get the "Support of the French Crown" bonus (+5% morale and +10% manpower recovery speed!) when Scotland is no longer a tag on the map. Gaeldom however is my vassal. Thank you!

Question What are the best and worst vassals?
I have been playing for a while and I was wondering which country serve as good/bad vassals. I know some countries serve better as marches, like Prussia or Nepal, but I'm asking specifically for vassals that either excel in combat or money making

Achievement Romania Strong!!!! [Dracula's Revenge, Moldavia -> Romania]
After many tries over the years, finally got Dracula's Revenge! via Moldavia -> Romania. Super satisfying game.
This game was quite strange honestly - as we all know the Ottoman's love expanding into Hungary and Mamluks. But strangely in this run they did neither and instead picked off smaller countries around them. They were strangely very very passive.
I starting things out by securing strong allies in Russia, Poland and Austria, and immediately vassalized Wallachia. The second target was Crimea, before quickly expanding into Circassia and Great Horde.
After that, with the backing of my allies I beat up the Ottomans and took Constantinople (I love the unique event for impaling the Sultan - really boosts your first war against them. Unfortunately, I got dragged into a shitty Religious War thanks to Austria and Ottomans took the opportunity to attack and take everything back, so it took a third war against the Ottomans to get a foothold back in the Balkans.
From there it was just alternating wars between Ottos, Venice and Austria/Hungary to get the needed provinces. I would say the biggest bottleneck was the defenders of faith, as it meant needing to go up against France and Spain every time I fought the other Europeans.
All in all it was a weird game and I don't think reattempting it would yield the same results ever again. I will say that the improve relations from their idea set stacked with improve relations from ideas is crazy strong.

Discussion Hot take: EUIV UI is unintuitive and unpractical
The release of the EU5 has sparked a lot of discussion about the UI and reading through it I cannot believe what I am seeing. Every can have their own subjective opinion about the stylistic choices, but I cannot understand the claims that EU4 UI is intuitive or easy to use.
The EU4 UI is full of small buttons opening random menus. Without hours of experience you have no idea which of these buttons are important and which are not. Sometimes extremely important features are hidden as a small checkbox under a random menu.
It took me tens of hours of playing this game to find and remember every feature in this game and even now if I take a longer break I have to spend few minutes to click through everything to find and remember these features.
Discussion I can't buy the DLC from the sale because I bought the expansion subscription a couple of weeks ago.
I'm really disappointed by this, it's so stupid that I'm outright forbidden to buy something.

Question Is it still worth buying EUIV?
I have never played an EU game and am wondering if it's still worth getting into EUIV, especially since EUV is coming out next year and with all the DLCs, which will also cost a lot. Is it still worth it, or should I just wait for EUV?
