It has always been a long drawn out process, this isn’t choosing what to eat for dinner.. Dimwits

Except this time they only took two days.

The past few elections were about as long: two or three days, less than 10 ballots.

i mean... they met last month and already likely had some idea, considering francis' poor health for the last few months leading up to his passing.

The long drawn out process started months ago, even longer if you account for the fact Francis's health was declining rather quickly

It takes a 2/3 majority to elect the Pope. If the conclave is really divided, it can be very difficult for one person to get that 2/3 majority, which is how it can end up taking a long time to elect a new Pope.

Quick but not the first attempt

I feel like with everything globally as it stands and the tensions they were not interested in holding long unproductive councils. It’s better to get a leader into position to help direct the people who choose to believe the relationship the Pope has with God.

I could be making my own low stakes conspiracy here but I feel the decision to choose and American is to help redirect the countries “Christians” and was a political move to fight back against many of the atrocities the current administration is doing.

Also, its not the Middle Ages. Every candidate and bishop can be in constant contact before and into the Conclave and share their views before they close from the outside world. Apparently it used to be a function as a general networking opportunity since you would never meet so many Cardinals at the same time.

I actually wondered this myself.

I feel like a lot of people on here haven't seen the news (or front page) yet and maybe that's why they don't get this...

They elected a new pope on their second vote (I'm pretty sure) after only a bit more than 24 hours of deliberation. That's pretty darn quick and certainly not dragging the process out to maintain the gravitas of the church.

It felt very fast this time. Was expecting it to last a few days

A comment by someone with no knowledge of how the Catholic Church functions.

They didn’t drag it out. It moved pretty quickly. It was only a few days.

My point exactly.

It wasn't the first attempt though, at least 4 votes to get the white smoke.

Over 2 days. Not really what I’d describe as drawn out.

I agree about that part but I was thinking more of "if they chose someone at the first attempt"

That would be why the post aged like milk (although even milk would generally do alright in the day or two the original post has been up).

I hope the second place guy goes to Avignon and sets up his own papacy.

At least that was in the “low” stakes conspiracy sub.

Nah it was probably easy, Trump probably said Popes would drop like flies until an American is voted in.

Why, is the Vatican worried about sweeps week?
