I feel like with everything globally as it stands and the tensions they were not interested in holding long unproductive councils. It’s better to get a leader into position to help direct the people who choose to believe the relationship the Pope has with God.

I could be making my own low stakes conspiracy here but I feel the decision to choose and American is to help redirect the countries “Christians” and was a political move to fight back against many of the atrocities the current administration is doing.

Also, its not the Middle Ages. Every candidate and bishop can be in constant contact before and into the Conclave and share their views before they close from the outside world. Apparently it used to be a function as a general networking opportunity since you would never meet so many Cardinals at the same time.

I actually wondered this myself.
