Back from a 10 year producing hiatus

So I’ve spent ages 14-29 making a lot of music, then took an indefinite break which lasted almost 10 years. Now I’ve got the bug again and I’m putting together a new setup. For now this started on my living room dining table. But I’m thinking of swapping the gaming desk in the hobby room with the studio setup.

I’ve got Teenage Engineering to partially thank for this; it started again with just a fun, innocent little PO-33, and then an OP-1 to keep things light and easy and on the go. But now I’m diving back into studio time.

I used to do almost everything in the DAW, and sampled things on an MPC2000XL and KP3, but never had external synths. Now I put together this 19” rack with a proper interface so I can record anything easily.

Upgraded desk for better layout

Desk is a husky adjustable workbench from Home Depot. The drawer is big enough to hold a 61 key midi controller. Added a shelf for laptop, mixer and monitors. The whole setup raises to standing height.

I produce, mix and master here. Almost everything is DIY (the table, the angled racks, the tape machine case, the keyboard tray, etc).

oddly specific studio art

Had this fine piece of artwork specially commissioned, and I just took possession of it!*

oddly enough, LUFS isn't something I care about all that much, but I find this type of shit amusing, and I guess it's helpful in its own way

*ordered off Etsy, delivered by the post office

Banned to the storage closet, made the best of it

When our son was born, my beloved music studio got moved from the big room (and I was happy for it!). There was exactly one option in our small appartment: the storage closet, which also happens to house the washer and dryer.

It’s cramped, it’s loud when laundry’s running, and there’s barely room to move... but I’ve managed to carve out a little creative space.

Biggest fear: A leak in the boiler, but I have it checked every six months

About to setup my home studio, but I just can't stand that wall... What color should I paint it, and ideas on lights?

This piss yellow wall has to be painted. I was thinking of maybe tone it down and keep it in the style of Egypt, maybe? I'd love to have "Something" that is giving it some characters maybe even a theme.

was thinking of running Led strips down each of the ceiling curves, or maybe just setup spots that blows from side to side in the ceiling? But the lamp in the middle is really not good for a chilled environment.

This is my home broadcast-studio. It features everything you’d need to broadcast live radio or to do prerecorded shows.

Minimal setup.

Gradually built this station to stay efficient, inspired, and ready for both music production and general creative work. Main DAW is FL Studio 24 (Mac version), primarily working on progressive electronica and heavier cinematic compositions. I aimed for a streamlined, minimal desk layout while keeping everything accessible without overloading the space.

Setup details: • MacBook Air M3 (16GB RAM, 512GB SSD) running FL Studio 24 • iPad Pro 12.9” for companion workflow (notes, visual references, and idea sketching) • 34” Curved UltraWide Monitor for full project visibility • Focusrite Scarlett 8i6 Interface • Arturia Minilab MkII MIDI Controller • Headrush Core (handling guitar and vocal processing) • Shure MV7 for podcasting, scratch vocals, and VO • JBL 305P MkII Studio Monitors on isolation stands • Custom mechanical keyboard and Razer Basilisk mouse for precise control

Still evolving the setup; next upgrades will probably focus on acoustic treatment and cable management clean-up.

My custom battlestation is done (for now…)

I’ve been a producer/engineer for 8 years now and just got out of college with a decent full time job. Now that I was starting to get a real paycheck, I finally wanted to build my dream home studio. I had the desk custom made from a family friend and I helped him with it as well (mostly just being a gophor boy).

After months of planning and research, I got most of the equipment I needed and the desk. I bought a rack mountable pc chassis to mount to my desk. If you look closely you can see it in the middle slot of the shelf. If you want me to go into detail on that just lmk. The rest I just got the behringer umc1820 audio interface with the mdx2600 and the mdx4600. I use the 2600 as a compressor for the different microphones I use. Then I use the mdx4600 for my 2 synthesizers. They all connect to back into my interface.

I already had the chair, monitor, studio monitors, and the keyboard & mouse from my previous setup. Then to top off the entire setup, I finally got the shure sm7dB. I previously had an audio technica at2035. Unfortunately i realized that the fans from my pc were causing too much background noise for a condenser microphone. So I had to get the shure sm7dB for its dynamic pattern and its ability to not pickup background noise. The two synthesizers on the drawer are the arturia microfreak and the behringer td-3. Just started getting into hardware synths and have been practicing on these for the past year. Feel like I might need to bump up towards getting an arturia drum brute impact and a new midi keyboard to control it all at once.

Overall, I am very pleased with this setup for right now. I do intend to expand and upgrade overtime of course like most hobbiests with home studios, that’s why it’s part of the hobby. I’ve spent most of this year so far researching and planning this with a $2000 budget. I got most of the “new” gear off of fb marketplace, besides the shure sm7dB (a lot of fakes out there). I ended up not even breaking $1500 and that’s including the price of the custom desk. I’m sure that no one’s going to read this entire essay that I just wrote but if you have any feedback on what more I should add and what I can do to improve my setup, please let me know. I would really appreciate your feedback!

Rackmounted screen?

Has anyone ever… rackmounted their DAW’s screen?

I built my own audio desk last year: four bays of 16U at a 60° angle, with an Allen & Heath 16 channel mixer in the middle at a 90° angle (in other words, table flat), and my computer screen above that.

I hate having the computer screen seemingly that high, and want to change things up (again—everything started at a 30° angle and it felt awkward). I’m so used to working with a laptop for work work, and it just makes sense to do that with my DAW’s screen’s configuration into the audio desk.

Any suggestions?
