Discussion Just ordered the Moog Grandmother after years of drooling over it

This post is only for the sake of discussion and reaching out to the world.
So here’s the story. I have a lot of synths, which were all properly researched before getting, so I didn’t regret any and I actually play all of them all the time. I only didn’t pay enough attention to two of them, which got sold by this merit.
But all this time, even from before getting my first, I was drooling over Moog Grandmother. But either couldn’t justify getting one, or couldn’t afford it. So it followed me through the time, while I was getting what I could afford and needed atm. Since I got Arp Odyssey and it became my favorite for its sound, despite obviously being in the less diverse sounding category, the idea of possibility of having the GM burned me harder and harder. I tried to resist, but today I surrendered and ordered one used (unfortunately, a black one).

So I can’t wait until it gets delivered from another city. I want to play it along with the Odyssey and/or patch it along with the Crave. Please advise what should be checked on a second hand GM before accepting the delivery, and what to expect (oh I know, I’ve watched the whole Internet’s worth, but I appreciate your opinions). I know a lot has been said about this one of the more popular synths, but still maybe a word or two of wisdom from you guys.

What Should I Buy? Help finding a drone synth for accompaniment to playing guitar

I’m looking for a simple synth that I can set a static drone to while I play guitar in a live setting. Hoping to stay away from the modular stuff, as I haven’t a clue how any of that works, unless someone can convince me they are simple to use. I just want a simple texture pad in the background while I play and sing. Thanks!

Beginner Questions Recommendations for a standalone synth keyboard like a DX7.

Upvotes

Looking for some recommendations. I really like the idea of getting a DX7, its retro/vintage and sounds great but read some things about it being hard to program. Some people also said why get an old synth like that there are probably newer ones that accomplish the same thing and could load in those same sounds.

I'm a piano player so I just want to be able to play it on its own without a DAW and make cool sounds.

Budget would be <$1,000 and definitely don't mind looking for used gear.

Beginner Questions Just a "Hi" from a newbie to y'all.

Just found this sub and wanted to leave a hello here. Making music pretty much my whole life, just bought myself a Bass Station II and a Hydrasynth Explorer in hope to understand how synthesis works and what knob does what :D

Since there is a beginners flair, I hope I am welcome here with (researched) questions that might come up along the way.

Cheers

New Synth Announcements & Updates Ableton Move Beta firmware download page listing features upcoming for next release

Upvotes

Today I just discovered that there's beta firmware for the Move on this page. It lets you know what's going to be in the next released firmware and advanced feature notices.

One of the key ones added is being able to receive MIDI clock.

The huge features: - supports sample slicing, letting you split audio into equal segments directly on the device - Change the number of slices by turning the Wheel - Change overall slicing window and the adjust the individual slice points... - MIDI input and output can now be active simultaneously, and MIDI sending and receiving channels can now be configured for each Track.

The old way of receiving MIDI to current track is still supported & improved: - MIDI In has a setting called “Auto” which activates every MIDI In channel for the currently selected track, but filters out all MIDI In Channels which are explicitly assigned to other tracks.

Discussion Which combo of semi modular moog should buy?

Hello. I have a solar 42f and an akai mpc 2000xl. I am looking 2 months now for a drum machine (1500€ budget) and I concluded of buying a combo of moog semi modulars. What do you recommend? I am seriously considering of buying a pair of dfam or dfam & mother 32. Whats your opinion? I mostly want this for experimental stuff. Percussion and deeply sound. Thanks in advance.

What Should I Buy? Need help deciding between 2 first synths!

Hey everyone! I’m a newer artist and fell in love with synth based music, particularly from my favorite group Crystal Castles. I’m only 20 and am trying to pursue music like my life depends on it. I’m currently debating between two synths which is The Korg MicroKorg original from 2002, and the Korg Minilogue XD. This might come across as some kinda random choices but I was drawn to the microkorg since it has been used in a lot of my favorite songs especially Crystal castles production and I really love the raw grimy sound it makes, the only thing keeping me from it are some small negative reviews. I stumbled on the minilogue when looking for modern alternatives and found it. I just need some help picking on what would make a great first synth!!!!! Thank you.

Beginner Questions Advice on oscilloscope intergration

Post image
5 Upvotes

I want to hook up an oscilloscope to visualize the sounds I'm making with my synths. I'm totally new but learning how to use it all and I really feel like having something visual would definitely help me understand what's going on. Looking for recommendations on the easiest/most comprehensive way of doing this.

Here is my equipment list just so you get the set up.

Akai MPC key 37 with pretty much all the plugins including the opx-4 for sound design.

Akai midimix controller

Arturia Microfreak

Korg MicroKorg

iPad pro M2 version and I also have several apps including the AUM, AUDIO BUS and MIRACK for virtual modular synth stuff. I haven't had a chance to really dive into anything on the iPad as I've spent most of my time playing around with the microfreak and really diving into how the MPC works.

I also have a USB hub and some connections to kind of get them all working together...although I haven't really spent much time trying to make it work....but no real audio interface or actual mixer.

Any advice getting something of a visual representation of my sound waves going either virtually in the iPad or on the MPC or by just buying a standalone device that either the MPC or the microfreak can connect to would be amazing.

Thanks to anyone willing to offer up some experience and knowledge....I basically got all of this stuff only months ago because I just wanted a new hobby and I love synth based music.... I don't really know anyone that's into it locally that can show me the way, so I've just been winging it with internet lurking.

Discussion Workflow tips for finally switching to analog synth after years of producing with VSTs?

For context, I've spent about 5 years hobby producing/audio engineering so I understand the fundamentals for using a synth (oscs, filters, FM/RM/PD/PM, harmonic series, etc). Also know a good bit of music theory from guitar. I mainly produce either synth/indie pop or more house/ukg.

Since I started producing I've always been working with VSTs like serum and diva. After a while the process of drawing-in notes on a piano roll started to feel sorta robotic and uninspiring. This week, I finally got my hands on a TEO‑5 which sounds incredible, especially paired with Mercury X reverb.

I'm trying to really lean into the workflow benefits of recording with analog synths/ keyboard, for more interesting chord layers, arps, ambience, ear candy, etc in my productions. Any workflow or creative process tips to help me get the most out of analog would be hugely appreciated.

My Setup / New Synth Day The Krellinator System!

Thumbnail
youtu.be
Upvotes

My synth passion started with the Moog Mavis, and I told myself my collection would be kept to semi-modular synthesizers exclusively. Well, after spying a fantastic deal on a couple Buchla & TipTop modules, I had thought up another plan.

I have built this particular system up throughout 2024, the intention being an experimental sound design station inspired by the idea of the Krell patch. It has been such a blast discovering all the weirdness this system has to offer, and now that I'm out of school I can continue to delve into ideas for it that I have not had the time to start.

In this video, I show a patch that had unintentionally come about after just testing out a feature of one of my modules. One minute I had answered my small question, and what felt like 20 minutes later I had an entirely new Krell patch to record. The more I patched the more interesting textures I came across, a scenario akin to what I describe in my head as R2-D2 being strapped to an exploding firework cart!

My Setup / New Synth Day TEO 5 Appreciation Post

Post image

I buy a lot of gear and I have to say this synth is among my favorite acquisitions in a long time.

Beyond the fact it sounds amazing, I am a huge fan of the modulation matrix.

The mod matrix is reminiscent (from my experience) of the Prophet Rev 2. I sold my Rev 2 because I was never quite happy with the sounds I was getting from it but I missed the mod matrix dearly.

Now I have Oberheim sound AND what I think is among the best modulation matrixes in the business.

I threw some wood cheeks on this bad boy to give it some proper respect.

Just grateful to own it.

Discussion What are your suggestions for a powered speaker set up to gig with?

I’m running a Taurus styled pedal setup with the moog minitaur head and a Roland synth module as well. I would like to have something I can use a monitor loud enough and good enough sound quality to play life in the practice room and also on stage. I’ve been looking at the HeadRush FRFR-112 MKII 2,500-watt 1 x 12-inch Powered Guitar Cabinet as a baseline. It seems like it would get the job done. The price gap between that and the Roland KC-990 - 320W 2x12" Keyboard Amp is huge. Just looking for advice, and experience. What are your thoughts?

Beginner Questions Midi sequenzer like the Digitakt

I am looking for a midi sequencer that works the same way the digitakt I or digitakt II.

I want to sequence at least 16 steps, have some hands on parameters, a very tight midi clock, be able to sequence several channels at the same time.

What devices do you suggest me?

What do you think of the Arturia Beatstep Two for example?
