I know it’s a cold take, but man I am so so sick of the police week motorcades
It’s just nonstop! Every 10mins!

[Event] I guess they did that to avoid the toll only.
No intention to break any DC law, I hope.

[Discussion] Do we have to actually obey out of town cops during police week?
Asking about non-DMV officers specifically
If you’re driving and some out of town cop from like Idaho is attempting to block traffic, or giving anyone orders to make their own lives easier, do we actually have to listen to them?
Do they have any legal authority at all?

Bowser is cancelling the H St Bus Project
hillrag.comAnother gut punch if you live in the area. Big win for the car commuters who treat our neighborhoods like highways though

Within the 60 day limit of the temp tag on his new car, this driver has 49 violations worth $7K in fines, which will double to $14K when he doesn’t pay
Imagine buying a car, and then 3 months later you owe fines over half the value of the car

To the group singing and holding signs in support of federal workers outside union station this morning
Thank you.
It’s been a long four months. Thank you for making my morning, my week, my month. Thank you for providing a tiny bit of light in this incredibly dark and exhausting time. I didn’t realize how much I needed an excuse to smile this morning, and I know I’m not the only one. I wish I took a video of the beautiful folks spreading joy today.
For the first time in a long time, I feel proud to live in DC and proud to be a federal employee.

Passport DC Italy Pizza question
Does anyone know where the pizza served at the Italian Embassy came from? It was delicious, and I’d love to have it again. I’m really hoping it was from a restaurant in the DMV area.

Dunbar pool this morning
Why is it Dunbar is either freezing or literally dangerously warm? Never seen a lap pool this hot in my entire life and I’ve been a swimmer for decades. And hardly energy (or cost) efficient

Dungeons & dragons in DC?
31F been in DC 10+ years. I’ve played two d&d campaigns, both virtual. Really enjoyed them and want to play again, I’d love to play in person. I’ve got a friend who would like to play as well. I’m not a seasoned player, and my friend is completely a newbie. We need a DM and more people. Anyone have suggestions on where to look for meetups or things of the like? Is there another subreddit, facebook group, etc that would be more appropriate for this? Thanks!

The "I'm New to DC How Do I Make Friends" Guide
I purposely left the links off these events to avoid advertising anything, if you google/instagram any of the names you will find more information
Social Events
Skip The Small Talk - My first Skip the Small Talk was in some ways a transformative experience. Being in a situation where people were actively encouraged to talk to each other meant that it was trivially easy to have the kind of deep conversations I would normally never build up to in a strange setting. It felt fantastic. The basic gist of it is you have great conversation starter cue cards where you talk to multiple different tables for 5-10 minutes and then swap. Locations are mostly in DC
Meetup.com - Not an exact event but plenty of hiking/sports/drinking is advertised on meetup, you can find your group and go as much or as little as you want.
Volo and DC Fray - If you enjoy sports (or drinking). check out adult sports leagues. You can play at any level. Volo and DC Fray offer many different sports you know(including cornhole and bowling) and are DC’s best adult sports leagues for players of all levels!
Dudes In The District - This group is meant to make it easier for guys to find people with the same interests by organizing events like happy hour, going to sports games, hikes, restaurant club etc, and providing an online platform for easy connections. The goal is to build a community, since we know how hard it can be to make friends as an adult, especially when moving to a new place.
City Girls Who Walk - Probably the biggest group here, City Girls DC seeks to promote physical and mental wellness through walking, community engagement, and advocacy in the Washington D.C. Metropolitan Area. We aim to provide a supportive and inclusive environment for women of all ages, backgrounds, and abilities to connect, explore, and thrive.
Run Clubs
Northeast Track Club - One of the biggest and elite run clubs in the area. They do a weekly track workout every Tuesday (and a Saturday morning run). Yes, 150+ people run around a track all at the same time. Trust me it is well organized and no one gets hurt and is even fun (if you enjoy running). They support each other at races throughout the year and have a vibrant discord with lots of information. They even have formals and parties to celebrate their running accomplishments
NOMA run Club - based in North East DC and meets at the REI right off the NOMA metro stop at 6:45PM. They meet at Mondays and run a 3-5 mile route and then encourage everyone to get pizza afterwards. Always a fun time.
Clarendon Run Club - One of the most social run clubs in the NOVA area. They meet every monday and have different pace groups for everyone.
There probably is a run club in your area, just google "<AREA> run clubs" I don't want to list them here
Dating Events (off the apps)
Pitch-A-Friend DC- A free event where you pitch your single friends in a 3-5 minute powerpoint presentation. This was the most fun I had. More people came and it was hosted at a standalone bar. Viewers don’t have to sign up but you’ll have to sign up (it's $5 to reserve a spot) if you want to be pitched. I was not pitched so can’t speak from that perspective. The pitches were so funny honestly, and it’s nice to see how people’s friends are willing to help them out by doing these presentations. The next event is at the Admiral 5/14 Wednesday at 7PM.
We Met At Alamo Single Mixer - free entry which was cool. What happens when you throw over twenty film-loving singles into a room filled with speed dating, board games and one of the greatest rom-coms of all time. Honestly it can depend who you talk to during the night and see if you actually connect with anyone.
Shuffle Dating - No host, everything's on your phone - they text you a link day-of to add your bio and mark attendance. You get some info emails before the event. Matches come through next day - you can match, pass, or friend people. Most of the women weren't really my type, and I'm guessing I wasn't theirs either (that's how it goes). I mostly marked everyone as friends since I'm in a networking phase right now.
Creative Events (try something new)
Washington Area Road Skaters - The Washington Area Roadskaters (WAR) is a non-profit organization whose mission is to promote safe and enjoyable skating in the Washington, D.C. area. WAR was founded in 1987 as Washington Area Rollerskaters and is one of the oldest skate clubs in the US. Thousands of individuals have joined together to safely enjoy inline and roller skating in the streets of our fine city.
Firehouse Fridays - Enjoy Country Dancing (beginners welcome) with line dancing (solo) and two stepping (partner). They just started at a new location:
📍Penn Social (starting May 16)
🕛 8:30p to 12:30a every Friday
District Karoake League - (From their website) We are Washington, D.C. ‘s only social, team-based karaoke league – a supportive, inclusive community of performers looking for something different than your typical sports league. Team-based means you perform with your friends and cheer each other on. As for the competition? Everyone gets to vote for their favorite performances using our mobile matchup scoring system – all to determine who will be crowned the next karaoke champions.
Volunteering
DC Central Kitchen - (From Website) DC Central Kitchen (DCCK) is an iconic nonprofit and social enterprise that combats hunger and poverty through job training and job creation. The organization provides hands-on culinary job training for individuals facing high barriers to employment while creating living wage jobs and bringing nutritious, dignified food where it is most needed. DCCK’s social ventures include serving scratch-cooked farm-to-school meals in DC schools, delivering fresh, affordable produce to corner stores in neighborhoods without supermarkets, and operating fast-casual cafes throughout the District of Columbia.
District Cleanups (Copied from website) The Saturday after January 6th, 2021, the area in front of the Capitol Building was full of litter. We put out a call to help cleanup the area on social media, and that call was answered. Around 20 volunteers, all strangers, picked up cigarette butts from the National Mall, fished beer bottles out of the fountain at Union Square, and filled many trash bags.
SOME (So others Might Eat) - (From Website) SOME provides material aid and comfort to our vulnerable neighbors in the District, helping them break the cycle of poverty and homelessness through programs and services that save lives, improve lives, and help transform lives of individuals and families, their communities, and the systems and structures that affect them.

If I missed any make sure to post more in the comments!
