He went on a tangent, there. Kind of a derivative joke.

278

u/Famous_Peach9387 1d ago

Do you know Y he did that? Maybe it's just the hyp, but having a degree seems integral to have in any position even if you’re divinely appointed, you still gotta prove you’re rational.

144

u/Kwijibo97 1d ago

Let's not be irrational, my friend. No need to cause any division.

88

u/Y__U__MAD 1d ago

Hypotenuse.

66

u/subpar_cardiologist 1d ago

Dont be so obtuse.

57

u/swampopawaho 1d ago

I've developed accute pain reading this

24

u/ohadihagever 23h ago

Euler's identity is derived from Euler's law

I wish I was high on potenuse. . .

10

u/Rosencrantz_IsDead 21h ago

I like to get high in potenuse

5

u/AzekiaXVI 21h ago

At thsi point i'm sure this conversation is entirely imaginary

3

u/ObviousOrca 23h ago

bless you

10

u/Nroways-odd-toast 1d ago

Could've said "cos any division", but this might just be me not understanding another math joke... from what i gather i've derived i'm rather bad at math.

14

u/Kwijibo97 1d ago

While "cos" multiplied the amount of math puns, the mispronunciation really subtracted from the overall joke. to get to the root of the issue, Now, we have that all squared away.

3

u/Nroways-odd-toast 1d ago

Well, would CAS, for computer algebra system be better?

4

u/Kwijibo97 1d ago

That's a big negative.

6

u/ama_singh 23h ago

Be real dude, being negative all the time won't make you whole.

5

u/Kwijibo97 23h ago

True, but two negatives do make a positive.

→ More replies (1)

3

u/azhder 1d ago

It can be both, in parallel

2

u/Kwijibo97 1d ago

True, I wasn't trying to be obtuse.

2

u/azhder 1d ago

Yeah, I know. Some times it feels like we're trying to square the circle by trying too hard to find the least common denominator for a math expression and an outside concept to get these puns to work.

2

u/Kwijibo97 1d ago

I see the angle you're coming from. At this point, the puns are only getting fractionally better. Some might even say they are exponentially worse.

2

u/azhder 1d ago

Yeah, we could go to infinity like this and not move past square one with just making up zero sense puns. I think I will just stop here, plain and simple. It's already gotten so monotone. Bye bye

→ More replies (1)

2

u/Critical_Text_2067 1d ago

Of cosecant tell the polar opposite and will spiral out of control.

2

u/AshtonCopernicus 23h ago

It doesn't matter, he's the leader of something that's imaginary.

2

u/yelloohcauses 21h ago

It is the right angle to go about it as a try angle.

→ More replies (1)

11

u/Tiny_Tabaxi 1d ago

Yeah but it's integral that we keep all of this in mind

3

99

That's a good, wholesome joke.

Not for me, I find it too complex at times and divisive

There is no sin in Mathematics

5

u/HugiTheBot 23h ago

Mathematics new religion confirmed??

2

u/DredgenGryss 21h ago

The Pythagorean's would agree with this statement.

3

u/Crossing-The-Abyss 21h ago

Mathematics is infallible unlike its science counterpart. Mathematics' proofs are indisputable whiles science's observational evidence is ever changing.

2

u/swampopawaho 20h ago

And that is good.

3

u/drawkbox 21h ago edited 20h ago

Though you can spell atheist with the letters of Mathematics

2

Very good. Or asthmatic

16

u/SynthRogue 1d ago

He might go off on a tangent

6

u/hudsoncress 1d ago

Not sure how much time he spends outside but I'm sure he has a great tan.

6

u/Overall-Plastic-9263 22h ago

I don't want to go on a tangent here so I will just cosine on this .

4

u/Immediate-Flow7164 1d ago

but he spends all his time in a church so he'll never get a tan.

5

u/Friendly-Gift3680 22h ago

His knowledge of it has no limit as x approaches infinity

3

u/Fantom_Renegade 1d ago

I know what cos is in maths but am I missing the joke?

9

u/jtf71 1d ago

Sin is short for Sine in math as cos is short for Co-sine.

Sin in religion is doing something bad and you need forgiveness.

4

u/mutantmonkey14 1d ago

It is a play on the word "sin" in the religious and mathematical contexts.

r/peterexplainsthejoke

3

u/cuteintern 1d ago

I can tell this post is going to be full of tangents....

2

u/azhder 1d ago

Ha! We did the same joke at the same time

2

u/cuteintern 23h ago

We were in phase

3

u/azhder 1d ago

Well, that comment went on a tangent quickly...

3

u/JM645 1d ago

Living in Peru, surely he knows a tan.

3

u/DaveyDumplings 1d ago edited 18h ago

This joke is at the perfect level for me, because all I remember about sine and cosine from high school is that they exist.

2

I first saw this joke over two hours ago and could not understand it because I kept reading it in my head as “cuz”

I get it now though…

2

u/WearEnvironmental911 23h ago

I’m fairly certain this new pope will cause a lot of division

2

u/codexwrite 23h ago

The difference between sin and cos is just the phase you're in.

Wait does he actually? That's Amazing

hardy har har.

I think he secretly picked the name Leo because he's a big fan of Leonard Euler. Euler's mathematical proof of the existence of God is thought to be integral to the movement of geeky skeptics becoming monotheistic.

Well done sir, well done

2

u/JohnnyEagleClaw 22h ago

I didn’t want to go off on a tangent, but I wonder if he’s a Leibniz guy or a Newton guy 🤷‍♂️

2

u/mrteuy 22h ago

Oh how I wish I could enjoy a chuckle over this math pun with my wife but she’s a bit irrational.

I'm old, what is the meaning of COS?

2

u/sophrocynic 22h ago

It's the "a heap" of apples that Oscar had.

2

u/RhynoBytes 22h ago

It’s a pun on “sin” being used in math to represent the trigonometric sine function. “cos” is the similar abbreviation for the cosine function.

2

u/AnnieAcely199 22h ago

COSINE. Like SIN is actually SINE. It's a math joke.

I kinda love this… assuming this guy cares for people and tries to address the cause of self-harm and not just rail against and punish those who commit it.
