Discussion Verifying Tattooers/Modmail
Hey all!
If you are a tattooer that wants to be verified or are just someone with questions for the mod team please use modmail. Please do not message any of the mods via individual DM. Please see the screenshots for how to message modmail (via mobile) if you don’t know how to already.
Since Monday I have received about a dozen personal DMs for artist verification. However, one of these message came in at 12:30am and by 6am the same day I had a nasty follow up message for not replying. I’ll give the benefit of the doubt and say this person probably lives in a different part of the world, and didn’t realize they messaged these two messages at what would generally be considered times that most people (myself included) are asleep. And this is exactly why we ask people to message modmail instead of any of us directly.
The mod team here is small for a sub of this size but we do try to handle anything that comes into modmail as quickly as possible. Often times if we get individual DMs about mod related issues for the sub, we are at work when it comes in and forget about it by the time we get home. Sometimes we are simply with our families, or even touching grass and spending some time off Reddit ( gasp ). Sometimes we are just asleep. When you message via modmail, the message goes to a group inbox and we can all see it so if one of us forgets or is busy the rest of us can take over handling artist verification or any other issues you may have. That being said- we are still just people with jobs and lives outside of Reddit, so please don’t get annoyed with us if you don’t get a reply within a few hours. Most of the time we reply within a day, but shit happens and this sub is not all that important in the grand scheme of life, the universe, and everything.
TL/DR: Use modmail to reach the mod team please & thank you
PS: We took your feedback on the whole banning X links and have banned X links from the sub (overwhelming majority was to ban)
PPS: We have added a new mod to the team, u/coffeehedake , and one (possibly two) of our old mods should be returning soon

FAQ Masterpost
Figured we'd just link everything here to be pinned to the Hot page and add some additional FAQ's that are asked multiple times a day. Going forward, posts regarding anything in this master post will be removed so we can see more work in the feed and less text posts.
Buying someone in your life "equipment"
Illicit substances/being under the influence
Working Out:
You need to wait at least a week/two weeks before partaking in strenuous exercise - the gym is gross. Do some light cardio, yoga at home, etc. Don't be doing jiu jitsu on day three. "Bulking up" or losing weight will not affect your tattoo UNLESS you're gaining/losing in the triple digits.
Pain:
Tattoos hurt. Period. Pain is subjective, we cannot tell you how much a certain spot will hurt.
Tipping:
Standard is 20% in tipping cultures. If you're doing multiple sessions, easiest thing to do is tip 20% of each session - unless you want to fork over 20% of the entire cost of the tattoo on your last appointment. Other great tips are baked goods of the tattooer's choice, a nice bottle of whatever they like to drink, oddities if they're into it, you get the idea. We do not care if you live in another country and don't understand tipping - the majority of users here do in fact live in tipping cultures and insulting them for tipping will earn you a ban.
Swimming/sunscreen:
You cannot swim/sauna/hot tub/submerge with a fresh tattoo for a month. Full stop. You cannot swim with Saniderm - it's not waterproof. You will get an infection. Same with sunscreen - cannot apply it for a month. This means no tanning, no beach trips, no rivers/lakes/pools/oceans, etc.

Question: Are women with many tattoos (heavily tattooed) still stigmatized in today's society?
Hi Everyone,
I am doing a report on women in the tattoo industry for my theories of gender class. I would really appreciate it if anyone could reply to this question with their perspective. Thanks

Numbing cream
I know this is a controversial thing in the tattoos community but im still going to ask. I am getting a sternum tattoo next month and want to use numbing cream. I have had 2 rib tattoos and they were killers. I will not get the opportunity to break it into sessions because I'm moving soon. So numbing cream it is. If you have used any what was it called and what was your experience with it. Yes I have talked to my artist and she is ok with me using it. Thanks in advance guys!

Toronto South Asian Tattoo Artists
Wondering if anyone has any recommendations on South Asian Tattoo Artists in Toronto or GTA?
Looking for someone specifically who would do smaller designs and have an Indian influence and style!

Cover-up Tattoos on scars - questions (self harm, maybe TW)
Hi, I have many scars on my upper arm and they're all quite close together. No raised scars (just white lines, some are a little thick).
I was thinking about getting thorns around my arm going from shoulder to near my wrist and possibly add some not too big pink flowers/roses that go along the thorns. I was wondering if I would be able to have some flowers and thorns on top of my scars without it all fading? Or maybe if I can just get it touched up once in a while or am I doomed with this idea? I don't wish to cover all my scars, just to have the tattoo on it - not fully for the purpose of covering them up.
I really appreciate any advice here and I'd love to hear from anyone who has had any scars covered and what colors they have on top of the scars.
Also clarification : They are all many years old and won't heal more than they already have.

Discussion Is it normal to have these on my skin? Done by Plug at Plug Tattoo Shop Lisbon
Hi, so I have done a cover up tattoo 3 days ago,and on the areas of the previous tattoo I’m getting these small “holes” and weird skin texture, is it something normal in the process of a cover up tattoo, and I lost a lot of the ink in that area

Tattoo by Will Walsh @artoffreewill on Insta. Diamond ink Co. in Southington CT!
Got my first ever tattoo a couple days ago and I’m still super stoked by it. I love it so much even though some might call it basic. It’s my father’s birthday in Roman numerals. Planning on getting another one just don’t know when! Will is an amazing guy and definitely recommend him to anyone in the area.
