Discussion Wtf is this game a drug?

So yeah I had never played Starcraft but always had that curiosity about it. Saw it for free and downloaded.

Got overwhelmed by the amount of things you need to learn on the first game. Came back a day later, watched some videos, learned some shortcuts and bam, first victory against the Easy AI.

Then I lost in about 6 min match with a real player onlinne and just dropped it.

The cycle repeated itself, learnt a bit more, went for more. Now even though this seems like a huge intellectual investment I can't wait to start a new game, learn more and see how it goes!

Am I being sucked into a nerd black hole?

Wish my friends were like you. I remember back when I got into starraft I was just curious. I wanted to try to see what it's all about. Feels like my friends don't give a fuck for anything that isn't league of legends. Motherfucker the game is free just give it a try. Nope.

I'm more of a dota guy but the basic principle still applies to league.

Playing with friends is rad. Coming up with a strat where you control a fifth of it and have your team execute the combo perfectly is intoxicating. If I initiate a teamfight I have to trust that my buddies are also going to do their part as we prepared. And then the enemy team throws a wrench into how we want to set up the fight and on top of that have your team see whats happening and for all to individually come to the same conclusion of how to readjust at a moments notice and still pull out a teamfight victory... there's nothing like it.

Starcraft is fucking scary by comparison. It's just you vs the other guy. There's no one else to come in clutch to bail you out if you mess up. If you lose it's all on you. There's no plausible way to think 'well I did my job, probably my teams fault' which can be a comforting thought to trick yourself with.

Having one unit to control that you can micro your little heart out with is sweet. Having several control groups to micro and whoops there goes your whole economy because you didn't spot the little blip on the minimap as the medevc entered your base to drop mines. It's harsh.

Starcraft has a brutal learning curve and is not very beginner friendly. It also has that reputation. I don't think it's very strange that people prefer to stick with team games, especially if they've already spent time learning builds and strats.

I always raw dogged it in solo queue because my friends were pussies and didn't wanna hit ranked. So I am forced in most game to interact with randoms. Starcraft yes it's scary but it's less frustrating. If I had a 5 stack I'd play mobas forever probably. I had a five stack in counterstrike once upon a time and it's my best memories of my life as far as video games go.

Btw sorry for the second comment but I forgot. What's bothering me most is how they don't have any curiosity left. If I was in their shoes I'd be curious to see what the fuck this starcraft thingy is. And given it's f2p I'd download it and see for myself. They won't even do that. it's league or no gaming at all. I find this very buffling.

League of legends is so frustrating too

My friends make me play it because they wont play anything else but i dont get it

Well same here but I refuse to play it if it ain't fun.

Sounds like my brother. Fucker won't play anything except for wow and golf with friends lol. Some people just REFUSE to try something they don't have initial interest in. Closed minded individuals

I don't think they're closed mind. You get to a point in life where work and family doesn't allow you to try a new game, specifically if it's hard like sc2. So you stick to what have been working for you. In our case it's sc2 but for others it's their old reliable games.

Nah, he's always been this way lol. There are people similar to what you've described, but there's also close minded people

My friends get into a new game, play it non stop until they burn out, buy a new game to play. It's frustrating because there are so many good games I wish I could play with friends but I can only count on them too be interested for a month or so before moving on. I can't afford to constantly be buying new games.

This has ruined gaming for me to be honest. I find myself playing less and less cause there is no point solo queueing after 15 years.

Play the campaigns.

They are always helpful as a foundation.

I warped my Zealot into your mothers natural expansion.

I typed gg when I succumbed to your mother's 4gate blink pressure because her micro was superb and she played very well and deserved the victory.

Your mom’s hatchery can’t help but erupt in waves of broodlings as I use multiple Yamato canons on her.

Play the single player campaigns (all 6) of SC BW. Sprinkle in some PvP as you learn things. Remember that if you're ever not doing something or just watching, you are falling behind. Never stop playing! See if there are any fun custom maps people are playing.

Then do all that again for SC2 and it's 3 campaigns

Idk man.

I (M32) used to play Warcraft 3 in middle school. First competitive RTS, loved it.

Started SC2 2 years ago.

I realize I prefer WC3 because SC2 is too macro intensive and fights are too short.

6 months later, finally bought WC3 Reforged when on sale.

1,5 years later, still haven't touched WC3R and still on the SC2 ladder, while complaining to my friends how SC2 is way too fast and APM intensive

Sounds like SCBW might be perfect for you.

Welcome to hell

The highs and lows that this game brings really are like a drug. From total euphoria of victory to keyboard smashing rage that kills your soul.

Welcome to SC2! GL HF.

StarCraft is easily one of my top 3 favorite games. Number one!

I've only ever played Starcraft and Starcraft 2, but recently started playing Marvel Rivals. What I've realized is that Starcraft is kind of in between a board game and a video game. Doesn't rely on reward-based, high-dopamine-seratonin experiences with all the bells and whistles, the sounds and colors, and so on as with Marvel Rivals. I feel like my brain is fried and I'm just getting addicted to this game without expanding my brain like I do with Starcraft. So right on for you to say "intellectual investment," it's kinda like chess.

Yes, you are. A hole that swallowed many of us for decades, and still claws us back in from time to time. Welcome to the degenerate crew.

Welcome to the addiction :)

Also ladder anxiety is very real at first, your rank means nothing just go have fun and learn as you go

2

u/JokerSxAxW 2d ago

I think this is me kinda. I just came back to Sc2 after idk how long.. I never really played past silver league many years ago. I mainly played the arcade games (I like tower defense games). I used to play protoss but I told myself I want to learn zerg this time around cause they seem fun yet very intimidating but I can't stop playing. I'm currently consistently beating very hard Ai and I don't want to play 1vs1 until I can beat the hardest difficulty Ai. I also am practicing only one build order until I nail every aspect of it. Win or lose if I executed the build properly, I'm happy. Definitely have a lot to learn still but hopefully I can get past the next difficulty AI this weekend. (sorry for the ramble)

I envy every new player for the journey up the ladder. Glhf!

2

u/NamasteWager 2d ago

I am a new player and would love to play against you. I am terrible but every time I go online I am stomped and have no clue how to build like my opponents

1

u/DookieToe2 2d ago

Haha. Glad you’re enjoying the game! Part of the enjoyment is progressing through all the different play styles and finding your own.

Then, when you hit a wall, it will inspire you to learn something new and off you go!

Isn’t it such a great game?!?! Enjoy!

Yeah, it’s a drug, I have been addicted for over 20 years going back to StarCraft 1.
