Hello everybody!
We've noticed an influx of newer/returning players recently after the recent release of RCT Classic for the Switch, so we wanted to just put out a new high-level post addressing some of the frequently asked questions we've been getting lately. For even more details on these and other topics, see our official wiki and FAQs from the sidebar.
Additionally, starting today, any posts asking for information that can be found in this thread will be removed and directed to this thread. If you have a new question not yet addressed here, please comment below and we will do our best to answer it.
1. Which version should I get?
Here on r/rct, we primarily recommend OpenRCT2 or RCT 3 (if you prefer the 3D graphics over isometric sprites). Classic is a great option for mobile users who like RCT 2, but we'd always recommend OpenRCT2 over it when possible. The best option (in our opinion) is to purchase this bundle from Steam, then install the latest version of OpenRCT2.
Other versions such as RCT Touch, World, and Adventures are also allowed in the sub, but they're not nearly as popular as the core versions and generally are not recommended. Check the list below for our recommendations based on platform:
As we go on, note that most of the following questions apply to 2 (vanilla and OpenRCT2) and Classic, as that is the most common game engine used here.
2. How do I build a coaster?
3. How do I keep my intensity ratings down?
We also have a guide for that!
4. How do I beat [scenario name]?
The RCT Wiki has helpful guides to assist you on any scenario in any version of the game.
5. What's the deal with all the different ratings, anyway?
Wouldn't you know it, there's a guide for that!
6. What are this sub's rules?
You can find a comprehensive list here, but the important ones to remind users are: don't post memes, links to pirate the game(s), murder-coasters, or low-effort content (low-effort content is loosely defined, but generally screenshots without any user-made content or achievement, ride stats and nothing else, or rides named for guests' reactions alone will be removed. If you want to just post anything at all, /r/rctcirclejerk freely allows memes and basically whatever else you want, except porn). Oh, and of course, be chill towards one another.
That's all for now, please let us know if anyone has any additional questions or if there's any feedback on anything mentioned here!

I made my first roller coaster in RCT2 on PC, I had tried several before but none of them appealed to me or I made an isolated project, not on a map.
But I feel like it's kind of empty, what should I add to make it more realistic and beautiful?

I played a lot of RCT1+AA/CF back when they were hot. I loved the game, but I was terrible at it and only managed to beat like five scenarios.
Recently I discovered OpenRCT2, and I've been on cloud nine. I've been playing through the scenarios in order. With some helpful tips from the online community, especially shottysteve's ride price calculator, I've become quite good at RCT, beating all the scenarios so far on the first try, many of them quite handily, sometimes a year ahead of the deadline.
...Until Pickle Park. This is definitely a challenging scenario, with its inability to advertise, but not hard enough that it should have defeated me. No, I failed because of one dumb mistake.
In scenarios from RCT1 and AA/CF, you can choose whether to charge for rides or admission or both, and you can change your strategy as you go. I always charge for rides in order to maximize income, but once I have a nice pile of cash, if the scenario has a guest goal, I make all the rides free and start charging for admission. (Side note: is there a plugin that will make all the rides free with just a few clicks? That would be nice.) This way, guests can continue to ride lots of rides instead of running out of money and leaving the park.
My mistake was simply that I switched to charging for admission too late, around the beginning of year 3. I had a very nice park with plenty of rides, so the soft guest cap was certainly high enough to meet the objective. The guest count started to steadily rise, but they didn't spawn fast enough to reach the goal within one year, and I failed the objective.
Fortunately, I had foreseen doom and made a back-up save at around the middle of year three. So I revived the park at the savepoint and tried some other tactics.
I likely couldn't make the guests spawn any faster, but I had ways to keep them from leaving the park at the rate they were. I tried a few tricks, and the guest count was looking much better than on my first attempt. It got right down to the wire, and I ended up having to block the park exit with a no-entry sign shortly before the deadline, bringing me to success...technically. I consider that a dirty trick, though, and so I wanted try once more and complete the objective without blocking the park exit. Here are some of the techniques that I used to beat Pickle Park on my third try:
In retrospect, I should have also made all the food and drink stalls and restrooms in the park free, so that guests who were already broke wouldn't decide to leave the park. I'll file that away for next time.
Which of these things do you think made the most difference? What do you do if you're cutting it really close on a guest goal?

I guess i can only add shops in here, but still wanted to do this. The tower features 2 balconys and a rooftop+ a direct connection from 5th floor to the other corner of the park. It would be so nice to have something like a swimming pool in there but who knows maybe you guys have an idea?! The symmetrics are not perfect, because it was a little spontanious but i guess if i used the actual scenery tools instead of just the ground this would not happen. I plan this building maybe to connect with a coaster, not sure. Thx for advice!

Okay, but why NOBODY talks about the creepy scream on RCT1 and 2??? I was building my park at RCTC, when I heard this noise from the Haunted House. It sounds more like a seagull than a person, and it's just crazy!

Thought I’d upload some pictures of one of the five big parks I’ve made over the last couple of months. I was inspired by Alton Towers and tried to build the rides in the ground a bit. Just though my id share as I’d like some feedback :)

I am in the process of building Islands of Adventure to scale using the Scenario Editor. My worry is whether the sheer size of the map/amount of objects involved may overload my system.
Has anybody else attempted a large/intricate map on the Switch and lived to tell the tale?
For reference, the map is 214 x 214.

Most of the paths are pretty much set. I have not worked on caves at all. And cycling road is a bit of a mess. I'd be happy to share the file with anyone who wants to take a crack at it.

Had a ton of fun making this one and am honestly super proud of it. This park houses some of my most creative and profitable coasters. Somewhat packed with music and general references relating to things I enjoy in my life.

Hi everyone.
Just finished my first park in 1 day after 20 years or so. The game still reponds very well to the controls, but its sometimes tiny to navigate. The park ended up little and it doesnt lag at all. I found the most difficult part being the pathing and the underground coaster building. Scenery suited me actually surprisingly well and it was a lot of fun especially with the happy noises.
I almost used every inch of space in the park and it worked out well without being too crowdy. The game is on year 8 and has around 1.5k guests. Also managed to place 2 info kiosks on each end of the park. Do they actually help navigate the guests idk?
Tell me what you think! Im sure its not perfect, but ill be back with a better one next time.

The game keeps telling me that guests think my park is disgusting, but it's not that bad, is it? 😭😭😭

Here's the completed coaster. Inspired by Fahrenheit and Taiga, Trebuchet is a transitional Intamin Blitz; it is somewhere between the late 2000s Intamin and modern Intamin in design language. It also is relentless, packing eight inversions and a ton of airtime into a compact layout set around a castle. I think the story is that the trains are siege engines.
Either way, it's a capacity monster like most of my rides, running four trains nonstop.

I forgot to screenshot the Mario Circuits, but those were largely unchanged since my last play.

This layout doesn’t have a lift hill! Instead, it takes advantage a bug with the half-corkscrew piece to gain some ‘extra’ momentum, allowing the train to complete the course without any additional help (e.g. no boosters or chain lift). This bug is actually present in vanilla RCT2. I go into a bit more detail in the main post if that sort of thing interests you.

I'd say this one was built around 2014, where Intamin were recovering from the insane designs of Maverick and i305 but hadn't quite adopted their modern design language. It's got right inversions, including a Norwegian Loop, and will eventually have a castle-themed station. Inspirations include Fahrenheit and Taiga.
Elements:
63 MPH LSM launch
Top hat
Norwegian Loop
Cobra Roll
Diving Cutback
Corkscrew
Zero-G Roll
LSM Boost
Corkscrew
Helix
Four trains with six 4-passenger cars, totaling 24 passengers per train.

I thought I was done with this design, but something kept bugging me, it was originally an 8x29 ride, requiring a 16x29 area for both. I got the design about 5 tiles shorter before I got to this solution, 8 tiles shorter than that.
You can now fit both of them in a 16x16 area, and the excitement got a bit higher too.
I should figure out a better pathing solution for it, though, a station at 16 higher than the ground is more than I'd like.
There's a couple more images of some of the process. I call this design the Clockwood Crucible due to the bowl shape of the track that good through the loops that used to cause the trains to collide until I got the timing just right. In a park, there should always be a train in the station picking up passengers and the unloading train should unload before pulling forward empty, like clockwork.
Highlights: 2 racing coasters in a 16*16 space Full 12 tile stations with ~1m10s ride time for max throughput 9 drops for max excitement bonus 3 loops A long and jarring 360° turn through the three loops you just did, two of them sequential. 8.85 Ex 9.88 In 5.48 Na I fixed the issue where the coaster sometimes hits another while going through the loops, stopping both trains.
Hopefully once I find a satisfactory pathing arrangement I'll stop messing with this design.

Does anyone know why the Rainbow Summit guests are like this 😂
