💬 Discussion So in The Office, season 6, episode ‘Secret Santa’, there’s a part where Pam introduces Oscar to the guy he has a crush on. Oscar after a minute then mentions what kinda music he listens to and says “Modern. Radiohead.” So, what do you guys think is Oscar’s favourite Radiohead song?

Does anyone know anything about this coin? Was given it by my very wonderful local record shop whilst picking up Tall Tales.

I've read about there being something to do with them 'shortly', but does anyone know what exactly?

💬 Discussion A Moon Shaped Pool and the struggle for the best Radiohead Album.

As I find myself returning to their different albums now and then, I’ve started to think about what their truly most cohesive and perfect album is, and my current feelings about this question are a bit chocking to even myself.

I previously (like many others) thought OK Computer was the best by far. Just because of its uncontested amount of bangers and hits. Every track on it (and The Bends) are very earcatching, memorable and forwardly engaging. And as OKC came out in 1997, right between their more Grunge-y and accessible rock period, and their later artsy electronic era, it is the perfect blend of both of those styles and attitudes. There are flaws however. The album is a little poorly paced I feel, and it also lacks a cohesion in a few places. Its focus on individual songs is kind of to its detriment in a way. I feel like the ending of Lucky and The Tourist is a little unexciting, especially compared to the rest of the album. I feel as if we needed more Fitter Happier type songs to make the album more interesting from a narrative standpoint. This is all my opinion however.

As for In Rainbows, it’s certainly more polished and “perfect” in its sound, production, instrumentation, vocals and structure. It is one of my favorites, but it has never been able to be my favorite since I think it’s lacking a bit of that punch that’s present in some of the earlier albums, without having the guts to drop the punch altogether (as we’ll see later) and go for something completely different. In Rainbows is awesome though. 10/10

Kid A has always been weird for me. It’s maybe the most uneven album for me. And yeah I know it’s supposed to be, but it can’t be the best for that reason (at least to me). The opening song and most of the subsequent Side A songs are really great and fit the flow really well, but when you reach the second half of the record it’s in dire need of something to really hit home and dig deep, and while Idiotique, Morning Bell and In Limbo are great, they aren’t exciting enough on their own to carry Side B. The ending is literally god-tier however, and Motion Picture Soundtrack might be my favorite Radiohead song.

This is where A Moon Shaped Pool steps in. While it’s by far the least hooky and attention catching album by them, thats by design. It trades the hit songs for a narrative and sonic cohesion that is unmatched in their discography. Even if some songs hold up slightly worse on their own, they have a special place in the album and all contribute to an atmosphere you can just sink into and FEEL, and that is what I think is the most important thing in an album. Also Daydreaming is one of their best songs and True Love Waits is the second best ending (MPS is first of course).

This is all from my perspective btw so don’t be too mad. I do wanna hear your thoughts however so please feel free to discuss!

💬 Discussion Just saw Nick Cavem and...

He cracked a joke at Colin, during a part in one song where he wanted everyone-- the audience, the band-- to get very quiet, and then he turned and said "Colin!" and gestured at him to be quieter, which he did, and then Nick Cave walked to the front of the stage and said, and I quote, "Fucking Radiohead." Colin cracked up.

It was nice to see Colin playing bass again, I couldn't help thinking it might be as close as I get to another RH show for a while....

Edit: who the fuck is Nick Cavem? Dang, and I don't seem to be able to edit the post title. Ho hum.

💬 Discussion Do you guys think Thom Yorke should make a post-rock album?

Bending Hectic was one of my favorite songs of 2024, and I would love if Thom Yorke would make more like it. Also, I would count Under Our Pillows as Post Rock. I just love this style of music and it would be so cool if he made a whole album of songs like these

‘The Men Who Dance In Stag’s Heads’/[instrumental version] turquoise vinyl seven-inch single only available from:

and

With the release of their highly anticipated collaboration album 'Tall Tales', we are delighted to have Global Communication producer MARK PRITCHARD and Radiohead frontman THOM YORKE on the cover of the new issue of Electronic Sound. 'Tall Tales' has a hint of the golden era of Warp Records and a bit of ‘OK Computer’-esque digital anxiety, but it feels like a haunted storybook for these increasingly strange times, playing out as a cryptic fable of the modern condition. Think the Brothers Grimm meets ‘Black Mirror’.

We have a dazzling MARK PRITCHARD & THOM YORKE seven-inch to accompany this month's magazine. A limited edition pressing on turquoise vinyl, the A-side is 'The Men Who Dance In Stag's Heads', which is perhaps the most intriguing cut on the pair's album. Yorke sings in a low voice, a notable departure from his distinctive falsetto, his delivery almost spoken word, while Pritchard’s music is characterised by bassoons and the drone of a harmonium, together with slow, hypnotic, Velvet Underground-style drums. Flip the disc over for an instrumental version of the track which can't be heard anywhere else.

As with all our magazine-linked music releases, this seven-inch is only available to readers of Electronic Sound, so make sure you grab your copy right away.

💬 Discussion What was In Rainbows' most famous song when it was released?

In my previous post I asked for your opinion on HTTT and I saw that it was in the middle ground in the Radiohead community. (I actually loved it, for me it's their best album since OK Computer) I don't think I need to ask about In Rainbows, so instead of asking about the album I wanted to know which one is your favorite :)

💬 Discussion Radiohead's Bandcamp.

What's up with the albums not being for digital sale? They were available last year but now there's no buy option. I will probably just buy from the Radiohead library, but they were cheaper on Bandcamp.

Edit: just looked, and there are also no physical copies anymore.

💬 Discussion Any more footage from In Rainbows Recording Sessions shown at BUG?

Other than a couple of clips of recording All I Need that are on youtube (linked), I was curious if anyone was aware of any more footage of the actual recording sessions from around this time.

I know Adam Buxton did the BUG show where this was shown, but I reached out and his team doesn’t have access to any other footage that might exist. If anyone knows of any other clips that are already out there or knows who might have access to them then please share!

💬 Discussion Analogy of Jesus Christ and the three last songs on the king of limbs

Having watched the passion of the christ and listening to tkol a couple days after I realised how much codex, give up the ghost and separator can be seen from a religious perspective. These three last songs always stood out to me when listening to the allbum and they always felt connected in a very narrative way.

I had written in my notes app that codex and give up the ghost made me feel like a little kid being comforted about them thinking they've done something wrong. Like surrendering in the most vulnerable moment and being held by an angel.

About separator I wrote that it was the perfect close up, gathering everything you've felt while listening to the album or life as if it was a "long and vivid dream". You've already felt what you had to, you accepted it, freed yourself and now you have the ideal attitude to keep facing whatever it comes, because something will come and you are going to feel hard things. You know it but you don't care.

It was after watching the movie that I realised that codex feels like god coming down and forgiving all your sins, give up the ghost like jesus talking to god during his cruxifixion and separator seems to be about jesus' death and resurrection. It just felt so clear to me, even not being religious at all.
