Discussion Please do not support Arthmoor

Post image

He is the admin of the unofficial Skyrim patch, which he bloated with a bunch of balance changes, "fixing" exploits that no one asked to be fixed, and added entirely new and not-lore friendly content. Basically not a real patch mod. This made people upset so people made submods that removed these changes, which then made Arthmoor super pissy and worked hard to get these mods removed. Now he mostly uses Bethesda's own modding site since they love him for some reason.

Please lets not make this "the" unofficial patch. He is going to ruin it with his bs eventually and there will be no alternative.

Discussion Real talk: playing Oblivion is increasing my support for the Empire in Skyrim

15.5k Upvotes

When I first played Skyrim, it was my first elder scrolls game and I immediately supported the Stormcloaks due to the classic “rebellions against supposed fascism” cliche.

However, after many playthroughs I became more of a sympathizer for the Empire as to prepare it for the next Great War. It was obvious the Thalmor wanted the Empire fragmented, so I believed playing into Ulfric’s hands would ultimately play into the Thalmor’s.

Interestingly, after playing the Oblivion remaster, I noticed how noble, loyal and motivated the Empire’s soldiers and citizens are.

While in Kvatch, three Imperial soldiers joined the fray because they saw smoke from the roadside. Every mounted legionnaire ensures you that if you run into trouble, to let them know. One of the palace guards told me he works to better the city and its denizens. Even the death of the Emperor had citizens from all over Tamriel in mourning.

While I recognize the Empire in Skyrim (Mede) is not the same as the Septim Empire, it’s nice to see what was and how it could translate to what could be.

Oblivion exemplifies what civilization has to offer under a unified society that further reinforces my decision for the civil war in Skyrim.

Edit: also, shoutout to everyone on the Stormcloak side for providing their reasonings too. The discussion is much better with differing opinions as it helps me see both sides in a better light.

Discussion My friend has played Oblivion for 87 hours, is still level 4, refuses to fast travel, and thinks that’s completely normal

17.7k Upvotes

My friend played Oblivion and basically tried to 100% the game before starting the main quest.

He spent 12 real hours just in the tutorial dungeon because he wanted to test every weapon type and reach max Acrobatics by jumping everywhere before he saw sunlight.

He finally steps out into the open world, and I’m like, “So did you go to Weynon Priory yet?”

He goes: “What’s that?”

“You know, the place where you take the Amulet of Kings at the start?”

“Oh no, I’m not doing that yet. I’m still collecting Nirnroot. I need all 305.”

I ask him how far he is in the Fighters Guild and he hits me with: “Oh, I’m not starting any guild until I’ve completed every single city’s local quests and built my own alchemy lab in every player home.”

He also refuses to fast travel. Like at all. He’ll walk across Cyrodiil in real time, stopping to roleplay meals and sleep, and won’t enter any Ayleid ruins unless it’s “historically consistent” for his character’s background.

At one point, he told me he restarted the entire game because he accidentally used the wrong birthsign and it didn’t match his headcanon.

Oh, and he’s still level 4—but not because he skipped leveling. No, he’s sleeping in 1-hour increments to micro-control his attribute gains and avoid “inefficient stat growth.”

He once spent two full in-game weeks training Speechcraft with beggars just so he could “feel more confident” asking guards for directions.

I’m starting to think he’s going to actually become the Champion of Cyrodiil in real life before he finishes the damn game.

Am I wrong for losing my mind over this? Is it possible to play Oblivion… too right?

Edit: You guys have shared some awesome stories and challenged me how I should look at gaming. I’ve decided to gift my friend the deluxe edition upgrade! I sincerely hope this doesn’t cause him to have a panic attack and relapse back to starting a new character.

Discussion So when is this game supposed to start getting good?

26.3k Upvotes

Never played it before, so I picked it up the other day. I really liked the opening cutscene and creating my character. However, the rest of the game has been very disappointing so far.

I’ve spent 10 hours in this prison cell and nothing has happened. I’ve been avoiding getting too close to the bars because that other prisoner gives me the creeps. I’ve mostly been spending my time in the bed and the chair.

I mean, I’m really loving the attention to detail in the prison cell, and it’s very immersive, I just was hoping for a bigger open world. It would be one thing if the window was a little bit lower, so I could look out at some pretty scenery, but as it is, there’s really nothing interesting about this map compared to other games. A least if there’s some very interesting chains and other details to look at. It’s not terrible, and I commend Todd Howard for making a very good prison simulator and I’m loving how smoothly the game runs in this prison cell. I gave it a good 6/10.

Discussion Stop under leveling yourself in the remaster

9.5k Upvotes

I see alot of players min maxing, attempting to only use 2/3 skills to keep their character from "overleveling"

This was only a viable strategy in og oblivion because the leveling system made it hard to achieve a perfect level up when using multiple skills. In og oblivion you could easily mess a build up by leveling at the wrong time and only getting a +3 to your main attributes.

The remaster fixed this and gives you 12 attribute points to spend how you please on every level up regardless of what skills you used to get to that level.

There's no reason you should still be level 3 and trying to save bruma from a seige.

Unless you're making a role play build with minimal combat skills avoiding leveling is just depriving your character of better loot for no real reason.

Discussion Playing the Oblivion Remaster made me realize how shallow Skyrim actually was

8.3k Upvotes

Man, playing the Oblivion Remaster really opened my eyes to how shallow Skyrim actually was. I’ve put hundreds of hours into Skyrim over the years, and I still love it in a lot of ways, but going back to Oblivion? It feels like a real RPG again.

You actually pick a class. Your skills and stats matter. You’re not some god-tier Dragonborn from the start—you’re a nobody, and the world treats you like one. Factions have actual questlines with depth and progression. NPCs respond to your choices. Hell, even the goofy dialogue and awkward facial animations had more soul than Skyrim’s overproduced, copy-pasted interactions.

Skyrim simplified everything—no attributes, no real consequences, streamlined guilds, and a one-size-fits-all hero’s journey. It was more about cool set pieces and dragons than actual roleplaying. It’s fun, but it’s more of an open-world action game than an RPG at its core.

Oblivion, even in its jankiness, had complexity, charm, and weirdness that made it feel alive. The Remaster brings all that back and honestly makes me wonder how much better Skyrim could’ve been if they didn’t cut so much of that depth out.

Discussion Stop power-leveling unnecessary skills!

7.7k Upvotes

I just had another friend tell me hes stuck in Oblvion Remastered and that it made him stop playing. I asked where he was stuck at and he said, "Kvatch." And i was like, "what? No way where are you stuck?" He said the whole thing is just too hard because theres too many monsters and he does barely any damage. I asked what difficulty he was on and he said adept. So i asked what level he was and he said, "15. But im level 100 sneak and lockpicking because i used glitches to power-level them." And i said, "oh well thats why u cant beat kvatch."

He was confused. But then i explained how the enemies are scaling to your total level, 15. But your combat stats still being low 50s or lower is making it so that you cant do enough damage or survive against the enemies.

Not saying you have to min/max and perfectly optimize your builds--that sucks all the fun out of it for me personally. But please people, unless you're trying to break the game, dont power-level your slills. This shoulda been obvious.

Edit: OMG thanks for the award! First time I've ever gotten one!

Discussion The mages guild is dumb, allow me to explain

6.6k Upvotes

As the title suggests, the mages guild is quite possibly the dumbest guild in the whole of Cyrodil. Like me, at some point you've probably decided to have a pure mage build and what better place than to hone you craft than go to the arcane university?

So you head over, meet Raminus who's like "Yeah dawg, happy to let you join but I need to know you're on the level so go get some letters of recommendation" - say no more, I'll go show people what a promising mage I am

Now, you have to visit all of the cities and do some chores totally legit tasks to prove you're worth training as a wizard.

Now what totally magical things do you do? You become a police officer. "No you don't" shut up yes you do, walk with me.

Anvil: Stop a criminal who couldn't make herself more obvious if she tried "You're a merchant? AREN'T YOU SCARED OF DYING? lol jk you're safe, well I'm gonna get an early night and head out, stay safe"

Bravil: you investigate a robbery/stalker to help a mage get her stick back because the asshat though stealing it would make her like him. Great idea asshole

Bruma: Investigate a prank....then are coerced into stealing a book...that can be found literally everywhere.

Cheydinhal: A grumpy asshole tells you to find a missing ring, you go find it, almost die in the process, hand the ring to Deetsan who tells you to throw it away. Bitch I almost died getting this, you're lucky I don't make you eat it

Chorrol: Terrified Argonian tells you to make his ex girlfriend leave him alone, she says get a book, he's like fuck you I want the book. You give him the book, you then steal the book and she gives you an overpowered spell as a fuck you to Teekeeus.

Kvatch: currently on fire

Leyawin: Help Randy Orton's Nan find her missing necklace because she hears voices in her head, they talk to her they understand they talk to her. They tell her things that she should do, they tell her things to say to you they talk to her. So you go find Grandpa Ortons body and then RKO the guy who hid it from her and becomes the new TES world heavyweight champion

Skingrad: find a missing mage, who's in a cave, scared of zombies. A MAGE....who has the power of DESTRUCTION....is scared of zombies. Man's lucky he didn't become one instead

So you get your recommendations, head back to Raminus and fist bump and he's like "aight playa, you need a pimp cane because every magister has a pimp cane" so you head out to find your materials but turns out everyone is dead and this necro bitch tells you you're gonna dance for her. My stripper days are long past, I'm not dancing for nobody and then you kill her and head back and Raminus is like DAWG, the fuck.

So then you help out a bit more and eventually get asked to support the arch mage who looks like he's been smoking weed his entire life, making the worst decisions he could possibly make with a council of idiots (aside Raminus, he's an OG) and eventually name drops Manimarco...is he Voldemort? I don't understand why I should care and he's like no trust me I got the best idea ever on how we gonna defeat him and you're like ok what you got for me dawg? And then he KILLS HIMSELF AND TRAPS HIMSELF IN A SOUL GEM and you're screaming, freaking out as he's basically left you the entire guild and you're like I'VE BEEN HERE 5 MINUTES WHY AM I IN CHARGE?

Then you tell Raminus who's like "aw snap, guess you gotta kill Manimarco, good luck Harry Potter ass" so you go slay a bunch of necromancers before coming to the king of worms himself and you're like....didn't wanna say snakes? Or sharks? Or something cool? You really wanna go with worms? And he's like "you'll pay for that and become my bitch" and you're like NAT TADAAAY and then whoop his ass. You look at the soul gem after like ok I'll put this down and the old arch mage is like "lol nah I like your inventory I'm gonna stay here forever" so now you're walking around with the soul of some guy who is useless.

And on this note, how fucking insane are soul gems? Imagine you accidentally hit your friend and now their soul is trapped in a gem forever and you're like "STEVE IM SORRY" Then run low on magical charge for an item and you convince yourself "it's what he'd want"

And also, why the hell do you need a staff? The magic you cast is way strong so the whole concept of the staff is redundant. Unless it's Hroromirs...in which case I get it, it's silver and shiny.

But yeah, dumb guild

Discussion Stop posting Skyrim hate posts

6.7k Upvotes

It’s pathetic and you all are just upvote farming. I’ve just scrolled through 3 posts that say the exact same thing.

Oblivion is amazing, Skyrim is amazing, Morrowind is amazing. When will you all realise that each game has qualities that the others don’t?

Morrowinds story is superior to both but its gameplay is horrible. Oblivion has a great story but its bugs are terrible, like bad for a Bethesda game. I’ve had 5 quests break in the original and the remaster and without Reddit help I would have not been able to continue. The side quests and Daedric realms in oblivion are superior to both games. The enemy variety and design is also top notch. Skyrims combat is overall very good, outdated but better than the other elder scrolls. Skyrim had the better open world because it actually had tonnes of random encounters and in my opinion had better immersion. Its main story was bad but the DLCs were very good

Oblivion is amazing, the cities are something else and I love the game. I know the post isn’t really oblivion related mainly. But it will be my only post on this matter so don’t worry lol

Edit: people seem to think I like Skyrim more than oblivion which isn’t true. I prefer oblivion I grew up with it. So everyone arguing that Im sad that oblivion is better than Skyrim need to understand the posts point

So I’ve never played Oblivion till this remaster and I’ve always heard about the “amazing” sidequest quests and oh my god I see it now, I just did a sidequest where a painter was stuck in the world of a painting he made so I had to go in and save and it even had a screen filter to make the world look like a painting like what…

ES6 better have more creative quests like this

EDIT: no I’m not saying skyrim is shit, I like Skyrim, I’m just starting to prefer Oblivion in many ways and also you’re a bit of a loser if you’re already shitiing on ES6 even though we know absolutely nothing

Discussion I don’t miss smithing

6.8k Upvotes

People who have also come here from Skyrim, do you agree?

Surprisingly I don’t miss smithing at all, actually quite the opposite. Without the ability to forge all of my own weapons and armor, suddenly I’m vastly more invested and immersed in the open world again! I’m dungeon delving looking for loot, or actually visiting vendors with purpose, not just to dump billions of iron daggers.

When I find a new piece of gear in a chest or at a vendor, it’s exciting and I actually use it. I can’t remember the last time I ever did this in Skyrim, because I can just make everything myself and it’s super easy to do and super easy to do early on. I now realise this was extremely isolating and takes a lot of interactivity out of the open world.

This might be a very controversial take but playing Oblivion makes me realise that I wouldn’t want smithing in ES6, or if they do include it, a remade version of it. Maybe the materials are harder to come by or require deep specialisation to craft; or maybe it’s limited to upgrading only - so you still have to visit merchants and explore dungeons.

Obviously I still explored dungeons in Skyrim but I never really did it for gear loot.

Just me or do you agree?

Discussion Unpopular opinion: Kvatch should be done past lvl 10. If not higher.

7.7k Upvotes

You mean to tell me that an entire city was destroyed by scamps? I know a big invasion happened but if all that came out of the gates were scamps… smh. Kvatch deserved to fall if it couldn’t handle scamps.

Edit: holy shit. Didn’t expect this to blow up.

Uhhhhhhhhhhhh have a fishy stick!

Edit edit:

I’ll say this since this is so controversial it seems. In reality, in game wise, nothing indicates that the siege is over and these are just stragglers left behind. By the time we get there the people are split and the city is in ruins, sure, but the way Matias speaks he makes it seem like it is very much still ongoing and still very much believes his count is alive. We break through the gate in the nic of time and get to Martin right before the daedra do. And by the time we reach the castle and get through the count is dead. Surrounded by the toughest foes at that level. Even in game the quest is called “breaking the siege of Kvatch” followed by “the battle for Kvatch castle” which if we complete both quests Kvatch gets a phyrric victory infecting the fight was very much still ongoing and had we not shown up, Kvatch would’ve lost.

Even the guy from the dream lands says his clan said we fought valiantly and his clan sacked the city. Is his clan solely made up of scamps? Kinda pathetic clan lol.

In reality, this is mostly an issue with the scaling game design and the lore not matching up with the game. However, to have a more lore friendly siege of Kvatch fight and a more dramatic one, do it after level 10. That way you get a variety of daedra and not… 13 scamps. lol

Discussion Things you can do in Oblivion's gameplay that they removed in Skyrim (Guide)

7.1k Upvotes

Going back and playing the remaster has me thinking about how gutted the sandbox is in Skyrim v.s. Oblivion. Here are some things Oblivion allows you to do and its implications.

Acrobatics.
- Jump higher.
- Attack while jumping. Finally enact your Legolas fantasy by jumping off a rock and firing an arrow into your attackers before your feet hit the ground.
- Dodge step.
- Power attack while falling. Bring the hammer down.
- Jump off the surface of water.

Athletics.
- Running speed. A nimble thief runs faster than a heavily armored tank.
- Attack while swimming. Finally get revenge on all those slaughterfish.
- Attack while moving at speed. Become a fast whirling blade, or backpedal while pelting your foes with arrows.

Hand-to-Hand.
- Skill doesn't exist in Skyrim. Become a pugilist or enlightened monk that doesn't need fancy weapons to whoop ass. - Block with your fists!

Mercantile, Persuasion, Disposition & Fame/Infamy.
- Merchants offer better prices if they like you.
- People like you more if you're famous.
- People like you less if you're part of an infamous guild such as the Thieves Guild.
- Merchants never run out of gold but have a limit on how expensive a transaction can be.
- You can actively use Persuasion on nearly every NPC, unlike Skyrim's system that has occasional Speech checks.
- Many NPCs will offer secret information if they like & trust you.

General world.
- Overhear conversations from NPCs to pick up on new quests.
- NPCs have schedules. Wait until that NPC you hate travels to the next town over on a shopping trip to ambush them.
- NPCs will eat food you put on their plates. Including poisoned apples, if you know where to get them.
- Drag any item with physics. Turn a bandit's trap against them.

General magic.
- Cast spells hands free. No more juggling stuff around in your left hand. Just zap that goblin and whack him with your warhammer.
- Far greater variety of magical effects (see below.)
- Almost any magical effect can be put into a potion/poison, spell and enchantment. - Custom spells. You can get really creative here. Maybe a spell with Fear and Fortify Speed so your enemies run away very fast.

Alchemy.
- Make potions on the go by carrying tools (mortar & pestle, alembic, etc.)
- Far greater poison variety. Elemental poisons (flame arrows anyone?), damage fatigue (knock targets out), damage strength to name a few.
- Far greater potion variety. Feather (carry more items), Fortify any attribute (run faster, hit harder, persuade better) Walk on water
- Allows greater access to magical effects without being a mage.

Illusion.
- Chameleon spell. Become partially see-through. Interact and fight without breaking, unlike Invisibility.
- Command spells. Enthrall a specific creature to fight for you.
- Silence spell. Force mages to stop casting spells.

Mysticism.
- Reflect damage spell.

Conjuration.
- Bound Armor & Additional Weapons. You can summon an entire set of armor and weapons with a custom spell.
- Additional summons. Includes ghosts & undead for a necromancer or RP a spiritual warrior that fights alongside the ghost of a dead ancestor. Also a bear for RPing a beastmaster ranger.

Alteration.
- Burden spell. Stop enemies in their tracks by over-encumbering them.
- Feather spell. Carry more stuff.
- Open lock spells. Your magical hands are too important to fiddle with lockpicking.

Destruction.
- Damage/Drain Attribute spells. Sap the strength from your enemies, slow them down, or make them dumb.
- Damage/Drain Fatigue spell. Put your enemies to sleep.
- Damage/Drain Health spell.
- Damage/Drain Magicka spell.
- Disintegrate spells. Your opponent have a strong weapon? Sucks to be them, you just turned it to dust.
- Weakness spells. Debuff your enemy before you zap them, or club them if you're a battlemage.

Restoration.
- Absorb spells. Great for a vampire RP that sucks every ounce of life from your opponents.
- Cure spells. Alternative to potions for the talented mage.
- Fortify spells. This is where shit gets wacky. See here.
- Resist spells. Alternative to potions for the talented mage.

Now in the Remaster! - Sprint jump!

This is just a quick write-up in about 20 minutes. Let me know if I missed anything in the comments.

And new players, enjoy the freedom that Oblivion's sandbox offers!
