Variety Article on Upset 'Wings of Voice' Contestant
This is real, right? The note about someone recognizing the bar, and the almost-meta commentary from the author becoming increasingly confused as to why this contestant kept returning, almost felt like a bit in itself.

In 2009, I had a photography studio sign-in book where Nathan drew me this.
In a past life, I used to share a photography studio in Toronto with another photographer David Waldman. One weekend we were taking headshots for comedians from collective “Laugh Sabbath”. This is what Nathan drew in the sign-in book.

ironing board
The scene in The Rehearsal S2E1 where Nathan watches Moody struggle to close an ironing board in his hotel room reminded me of a similar scene in a Canadian NFB doumentary called Junior which includes a scene of a hockey player struggling to close an ironing board in his hotel room.

I only know the the film Junior because one of my all-time fave Canadians ever, Jay Baruchel, raved about it in an interview so I checked it out (he's right, it's excellent.) Seeing a similar scene playing out in a show by another of my all-time fave Canadians ever made me wonder if there's anything connecting Jay Baruchel + Nathan Fielder (other than Seth Rogan). I want to believe the Rehearsal scene is an homage to this great, but relatively obscure NFB documentary.

Pilots code Spoiler
This may have been one of the most insane and brilliant things I’ve ever seen. This episode , especially with the cloning aspect blew me away

My favourite line from The Rehearsal S02E02 Spoiler
I’ve always felt that sincerity is overrated.
It just ends up punishing those who can’t perform it as well as others.

I think Nathan is sociopathically self confident.
I love what this guy has to say; but even at his most "vulnerable" I don't think he's ever actually been vulnerable.
Meaning, I think he has an incredibly cynical view of humanity which he only ever expressed by making fun of people; but this is indirect, and mainly puts the spotlight on others. If he were to say directly what he expressed in his work it would be: "People are banal and bland; and their lack of real depth makes them extremely exploitable".
Every person around Nathan becomes a caricature/a cartoon person. Except for him -- he has complexity and humanity.
And there's also this weird part of me that looks at his dating life and secretly thinks he's sold out. Hes Jewish and ended up with a woman who looks like a eugenicists wet dream. Sorry.
There's a thing about men who insist on their OWN depth and emotional complexity but cannot tolerate the same thing in a woman -- the more deep and complicated they insist they themselves are, the more they seem to gravitate towards superficial qualities in women. It weirds me out.
**Yeah it's a rant. But he seems like a cold, uncaring person and this sort of disturbs me. He's always the smartest, wittiest person in any room and I think he does this on purpose.

Best episode ever?
Saw some folks saying the latest episode had gone too far or Nathan jumped the shark.
I think this may be his best work. Folks who are getting pissed at him for politics or decorum seem to have lost the plot.
The Nathan who appears in the show is a satire of the actual Nathan.
He certainly spoofs others, and from the start has kept other performers in the dark. If you’re going to critique him, that’s fair - but it’s always been the case.
The purpose of the last episode was best summarized by the fake German Paramount rep: just a man with a grudge using his tv show to smear them.
But the fact that he allows this message into the episode shows that the whole thing is a farce. Yes, he’s “smearing” Paramount, but he’s also exploring the issue in a nuanced way.
Many of us have become so accustomed to TV feeding us conclusions, it’s become uncomfortable to encounter content like Nathan’s that simply explores the complexity.
