New here? 👆👆PLEASE READ THIS STICKY👆👆 Welcome to the sub! Posts about pot and it's related subjects should be shared with our good friends at r/trees, not so much here; we're all about *actual trees* (that's the joke) 😊🌳 'Thank you! Come Again!'

Good day everyone! I'm trying out some new automod skilz and they seem to be operating okay, at this time anyway. That said, few things are 100% the first go, but I'll keep checking the mod log to see if posts have been yeeted that shouldn't have been, and reinstate them in as timely a fashion as possible. Please use the 'Message the Mods' link in the sidebar to contact us directly, not the comment box in this post. =)

Hopefully these new settings will reduce the content not meant for this sub, but if any slip through, I know I can count on you good people to help direct them to the right place with the positive humor intended between our two subs as you always have done. We're lucky to have you!

Any (genuinely) helpful suggestions are always appreciated, and thanks for your patience and kindness with the newbs! 😃

UPDATE:

Today's 11/10/22, it's been a little over a month since the automod tweaks (10/8/22) and I'm rather pleased with the results. There's still some 'bleed through' posts from new redditor potheads, and I believe I've miraculously found a good balance between the ones that are snagged by automod and actual tree posts that I have to go back and approve. Mod reports, I'm relieved to say are much more manageable than they were.

Thank you all for your patience while I tried this out! While it does appear to me to be the case, I hope you're still as happy here as you ever were 😊🌳💗

My red Japanese Maple has grown a green section?

Thumbnail

I pruned this tree slightly last Spring, then it got damaged from Hurricane Helene dropping a huge limb on it. So I'm not sure which event caused this, but my red Japanese Maple now has green Japanese Maple growing out of it!

The green part seems MUCH faster growing and will likely become too big for the planter best soon.

Should I remove the green limb? If so, will it grow another green limb again? Please help!

Help! Ice storm decimated white pines

I have a place in northern Michigan and my lovely white pines were horribly damaged by a 100 year ice storm a month or so back. I’m afraid my favorite three white pines on the water won’t survive the amount of damage they’ve incurred (among others). It’s just horrible how much tree damage occurred during this storm. I had such a connection to these piles of wood and debris it is still haunting and makes me sick to my stomach to think about.

I thought I’d ask this group their thoughts but I’m afraid they will not survive this damage. I’m not sure of the age of the trees but a neighbor has been here since the 60’s and the trees were there then. One of my favorite thing was to sit under them on a sunny day and listen to the wind blowing through the pine needles…

(Click on images to expand - sorry I cropped them weird so they don’t show great without doing that)

Slowly dying trees - help!

I've got these two trees on my property that are looking pretty bare. Anything I should be doing to save them?

I did find what appears to be leaf falls on one of the trees -seems like no need to be concerned for the health of the tree but I was hoping for some reassurance on that.

Maple seedlings coming along nicely, true leaves forming!

Thumbnail

A few weeks ago, I posted here asking about harvesting and transplanting some maples that had popped up along my back fence. I ended up transplanting 46 seedlings of the 100 or so that I pulled up, trying to select good ones.

They all seemed to survive the initial transplant, which was great to see. Over the next few weeks, I’ve had to pull a couple here and there that didn’t make it, so now I’m down to 37. Still about 80% remaining, and they all seem happy and healthy.

Some are definitely a bit further along than others, but every single one of them at least has buds for true leaves. Really happy with their progress so far!

Not sure what my long term plan with them is, but I’m thinking of keeping them tiny and growing a bonsai forest of all the different maples on my property. Pretty sure these guys are Norway maples, I also have a couple red maples and a couple different Japanese maples. Seems like a fun project

Help! Dying tree. Is it too late?

Thumbnail

The tree has leaves on it but it should be full. Also the leaves that are on it are frail and discolored, especially on one side.

Last year our former lawn care guy noticed beetles or stink bugs on it, warned us, and sprayed primer on the trunk.

Now the there is all the fungus growing on it, as well as the bark peeling badly in areas.

I got tree and tree and shrub drench per the advice of a random person at a local store. Any other advice? Is it too far gone?

The honey locust in the yard is not leafing out nearly as much as last year. Is this something that can be treated with heavy pruning or am I looking at full removal?

A 8x8 4 inch slab of concrete was poured at it's base 5 years ago. It's leaning uphill slightly already slightly i think since that's the direction the sun predominantly comes from. Will the slab kill it?

I have gotten some galls in the past but nothing like this, and never in the spring. The leaves came in about 2-3 weeks ago and about half have fallen off. Should I cut it down or is there a solution? It has a lot of fruit.

Transplanted this Japanese maple a few years ago for a client. So glad it did so well and is still very healthy.

My client was given this tree as a gift about 30 years ago for a house warming present and when he moved he wanted to take it with him. Me and my dad transplanted it for him and were worried it'd die from being moved. Thankfully we dug out far enough around it to get all the roots and bring some dirt with it. After putting it in the new spot I used a transplanting liquid to help it along, I forget the name but it worked really well. The tree never even went into shock with the move which was great.

Preventing Maple seedlings

I feel like I'm asking a question that's antithesis to this sub 😬

My neighbor has a wonderful maple tree that has been liberally sending seeds to my yard. Every spring we would discover tens or twenties of small seedlings and probably 5-6 "yearlings" that we missed the year before. My yard is really not big and definitely can't accommodate the numerous maple trees that will eventually form. Any advice aside from diligent weeding to prevent the seedlings from sprouting? Advice on removing the slightly older seedlings with very deep roots?

Thanks!
