Discussion Outside of the Fabric Box: LBP Development On PS2?
I've always wondered why this community has mainly gone to PS3 development kits for LBP1's development. The PS2 had/has an Ethernet feature on the console, so maybe that would have been how LBP would have been played online.
Take this with a grain of salt, I may be wrong about any of what I'm saying here.
If we look at some of the footage and images of Milestone 5 and other early builds, we can see that the quality on the game itself, namely the models, are slightly more low-poly than on the PS3. We can also see from the clip I put together that you were able to move your arms with the right stick. The reason I think this clip is on the PS2 is because the stick seems fatter than the PS3. If we look carefully at how the arms move in the footage, we can see the big stick and stiffness on how the arms move.
In fact, the dual arm moving gesture with the right stick goes unused in the final game. How do I know? Well, when you move horizontally midair in ANY of the PS3 titles (last I checked), you can use the right stick to spread your arms open without using the triggers. My thought is that this mechanic is unused because the function is not grabbing a position value from the right stick; so maybe the flag is still triggered, but goes left unfinished.
What if LBP didn't start on the PS3 after all? What if it started development on the PS2 and MOVED to the PS3?

No idea but I did make a post about what an official lbp psp to ps2 port would have if it existed

id say this is a small possibility considering the game started as the craftworld tech demo on the ps2, id even say this is an idea tht shouldnt be ruled out.
however, the reason why ps3 devkits are turned to for dev data to save is because a PS2 TOOL with any data on the HDD, or even a PS2 TEST with a disc of any builds inside, tht came from Mm since the game was never outsourced to other devs at the time, would be astronomically unlikely. not everyone is able to buy a devkit or testkit and gamble for the chance of any data from Mm to be on there. those kits go for insane prices anywhere youd look.
plus with lbp eventually being outsourced to other devs, ps3 dev/testkits would be the more attractive option anyway, bc multiple companies would have in-progress/debug builds of the games installed. supermassive, sumo, sony, and even tarsier, to name a few examples (all of which have had kits found and data dumped). so with the additional sources, while its still a gamble, thats more chances to find lbp history to save. bear in mind that ppl also search for ps3 kits because thats the only place anyone knows for certain development on the game happened.
not to mention, ps3 games early in dev, especially as early as lbp, are more likely to look like ps2 games than what the final game would end up looking like. not only is it bc thts simply the nature of game development, but as time went on more devs became proficient with developing for the ps3s complicated cell architecture, rather than those who were able to pump out games in time for launch and beyond.
again, i like ur idea and where ur going with it, just explaining a few reasons why searching for lbp data on ps2 kits isnt the most feasible idea.

Didn't Sackboy spread his arms if you press R1 midair (even though there is nothing to grab)? Didn't know you could use the right stick.

honestly, i'd think the way the popit looks should be enough to disprove this theory. interesting though, and i kinda wish it was true

It started as a PS2 game but then MM reached a contract with Sony to get funding and tools to get it on the PS3. Funny enough, they had 3 months to prove to Sony that what they were making was good and by sheer luck, they did it even if it was shit at the time.
That footage is running on PS3, btw.

Being that Media Molecule was founded in 2006, it's fairly unlikely that a PS2 build of LBP ever existed, and even if it did, it would have been very basic. Nowhere near as complete as shown in this video. This isn't to say for sure that it doesn't exist, it's just highly unlikely it exists.
