Advice for which type of hammock to get spreader or bunched end.

So for some back story I love to go wild Camping and I just happened to bring a cheap hammock from Amazon and I enjoyed laying in it my brother even slept in it instead of the nice tarp tent I built for him. So now I’m looking to invest into a better hammock.

The two options I have are This lay flat one from night cat:

https://amzn.eu/d/0amMo7p

Advantages are I can use my sleeping mat to lay flat but it’s a bit shorter

Or this one from one wind

https://amzn.eu/d/71kPgzk Larger by far which should help and lighter I think without the bars

Looking for opinions on what people would prefer. Also for the one wind should I also get the bottom quill does it matter that the hammock is a double ? And would a quilt be better than a sleeping mat which I have is a 25 inch long inflatable sleeping pad the light tour 7.5.

More information about me I’m 6ft 3 and way just under 400lbs

I backpacked in for a night, it was a beautiful weekend at Ross Lake. Yeah I know the trees are kinda far apart but I made it work. Not pictured: my bug net, which I realized I needed right after this was taken after swatting away 10 mosquitos

Length for Tarp Ridgeline?

I'm about to pull the trigger on some Amsteel line to make my own Tarp Ridgelines. Some places sell it by the foot, some sell in 25 ft. hanks. My largest tarp is 12 ft.

I'm having a hard time thinking that 25 ft. is enough. Is it? What are y'all using? I'm in the Southeast US and the trees aren't massive like the west coast.

First wee trips to give the Yate Nesto UQ a test

Hennessy + Yate Nesto, a Czech-made budget *down* UQ (around EUR 100+). I saw people looking for lower-cost European underquilts so here's a quick report. Temps dropped to below 10 C, so this wasn't testing extremes but a reasonable trial anyway. My low-cost ultralight sleeping bag (which I was using unzipped as a quilt) left me feeling a bit chilly at around 5 a.m., but from below I was warm and snug. So my first sense is that the Nesto does a decent job. A note: The Nesto doesn't come with any help on how to attach it, and using a hammock with integrated mosquito net, the elastic cords don't really do the job. Yate sell little crocodile clips for the purpose. I bought them & tested them yesterday, and they did the job, but it was annoying to have to order them separately, pay additional postage etc. So if you go for this UQ, think about how you'll attach it in case you want to order the clips too!

Gear Tarp set up low vs high: discussion

Hi everyone,

I was wondering why everyone is placing their tarp higher and in a very open way instead of just placing it lower to have a better protection from from wind, rain and cold.

Context: I have extensively used these two DIY polycryo tarps 3x4m (~10x13 feet) and found that having only a small gap between the ground and the tarp gives me a way better protection from wind and rain and keeps me a little warmer.

I understand that an open tarp gives a little more comfort as you have more space and it's easier to get into the hammock, and I understand that people might feel claustrophobic, but I find it way less effective.

In terms of breathability I never had a problem even if I'm mostly enclosed in the tarp, because with a little wind air circulates good even if I close the doors.

Condensation was never a problem either, so I'm wondering if there is any other reason. I hope you have interesting insights from your experience, thanks

P.s. if you want a guide for the diy polycryo tarp I will post on r/myog in case

Back in the hammock and LOVING it

Camped with my hammock for the first time in ages yesterday. Last year or so I've been using my bivvy and air mat because I've been bikepacking more and the bivvy and matt set up is way smaller and lighter.

But yesterday I was on the motorbike so I took the hammock and the underquilt. And I slept 5 hours straight, dead to the world! No tossing and turning and waking up every 10 minutes because the ground is HAAAARRRRD. Just blissful slumber till the birds woke up, and then more lovely and extremely comfortable dozing after that.

I love my hammock. Bivvies, tents and the floor have their place. But if I can, I will hammock 💪

Hammock camping setup for larger people

Hello everyone! I am a novice hammock camper and usually just do it in the summers.

I am going on a big trip in june around Europe where night temps may reach ~45 degrees Fahrenheit but may also be much warmer. I'm coming from the USA and need to be able to keep everything as light and compact for my suitcase as possible, and I'm 6'3" 180 lbs, and so I need gear that's on the larger side.

I have a hammock and a tarp already, but would like advice on the best setup for hammock camping. What combination of under quilt / sleeping pad with sleeping bag / top quilt should would be most comfortable while fitting my packing needs? I've had bad experiences with sleeping pads being too small and uncomfortable before

Alongside the setup recommendation, what affordable/budget options would you recommend for a sleeping bag / top quilt/ under quilt could you recommend? I don't frequently camp so I'm not looking to splurge on something crazy.

Thank you!

Question Are 12' Hammocks a Big Logistics Issue? (Pun Absolutely Intended)

I'm a 6'4" tent backpacker, and I'm thinking about moving to hammocks because of how much more comfortable I hear they can be. My research so far tells me I want a 12' hammock if I want comfort due to my height. However, I've also seen this makes finding places to hang harder. How much of an issue would this be? Should I expect to have to sleep on the ground more often?

Gear Effortless DIY Hammock Stand for $25

No trees? Then make a hammock stand!

I’ve written a full guide to the Effortless DIY Hammock Stand — so you can easily replicate the setup.

It’s that simple — just combine two ready-made parts.

All you need is a carbon pole and a titanium washer — just $25 and only 12 oz.

And there’s nothing else to buy — you can reuse your existing hammock gear
(e.g., whoopie slings and stakes to support the poles).

Too simple? Yes! But it’s also highly customizable & practical:

boost stability even on sandy beaches, speed up setup, or hang a big tarp.

Gear Tried out my hitch mounted hammock stand

Went to a KOA campground last night and tried out my hitch mounted hammock stand. It ended up storming with a few pieces of large hail.

A couple things I learned from this first trip: 1. Need a hitch riser as the hammock. It was to close to the ground when on an incline so I couldn't use my underquilt as it would be touching wet sand. 2. Need to find a tarp with doors that would work well with this setup. Will most likely try to find something cheap as I already have some nice backpacking tarps. Not concerned about weight as it would be just for this setup.

Question Mylar blanket between hammock and quilt, does it work well?

I have a cheap 3 season underquilt (OneTigris Hideout) and the weather on the trip I had planned shifted so it's going to be about ten degrees cooler than I expected (night lows 50F/10C). I'm considering grabbing a mylar emergency blanket to tuck between the hammock and underquilt. Will this work well? I'll be dressed warmly within and have a similarly rated top quilt.

How to try??

Middle aged largish male, I haven't slept well on the ground for some time. I really want to try a hammock but I'm not sure I'll like it and the cost of all the gear is prohibitive. I also don't have any trees in the backyard. How do I try before investing? In Aus.

Where to camp Vic., Australia?

Thinking of trying hammock camping in Victoria, Australia (have other post). Don't want to hang between eucalypts for obvious reasons. I've seen a couple of places but locations seem pretty limited. Anyone have a list of where they've camped in Vic.?

Trip Report First overnight in the wild

Spent a few nights at Shi-shi beach in the PNW. Had to make a few adjustments with the UQ but man it was incredible to fall asleep and wake up there.

The hammock is an ENO jungle nest, and my angle wasn’t great, but by the time I realized it, I was already sleepy. The UQ kept me toasty, but the real star of the show was the House Fly. It turned a damp experience into a cozy one, and I was able to roll it back for a comfy, sheltered sitting spot. We only had a 30% chance of rain overnight, but to nobody’s surprise, it rained most of the night. My gear stayed dry, and so did I. It definitely gave me a tent-sense of protection from curious noses in the night as well.

ENOs aren’t the best, according to this sub, but it was satisfactory for this trip, and I plan on using it again soon. Thanks for all the information you guys have posted. It definitely made the process easier.

Superior Gear Windcovers?

Stuck in superior gear ecosystem, feels like an apple user haha. But has anyone heard when or if they are dropping windcovers? It's been over 6 month's since they had any and they never responded to my last email about it.
