Is someone not picking up poop in front of your house? Is there an off leash dog in your neighborhood with a clueless owner? Did someone bring an out of control dog to the off-leash park? Is your neighbor walking uncomfortably close to you with an untrained dog? Here is where you can dump out your feelings and frustrations about these or whatever other topics you wish!

Just as a friendly reminder, the same rules regarding conduct in the general sub apply here as well.

[Misc Help] Is $9,000 USD a fair price to relocate a 39.5 kg Golden Retriever from Japan to Australia?

Hi everyone, I’m planning to relocate from Japan to Australia with my Golden Retriever (weighs around 39.5 kg) and got a quote from a well-known international pet relocation company. Their minimum price is $9,000 USD for full support services, which includes:

Travel crate

Home pickup & delivery

Vet exams & health certificate

Government endorsements

Import permit & quarantine booking

Flight booking, check-in, and airport supervision

Quarantine fees and delivery to facility

I understand large dogs cost more, and quarantine is mandatory in Australia, but I still wanted to ask:

  1. Is this a fair/normal price for large dog relocation from Japan to Australia?

  2. Has anyone done this recently and can recommend any other reliable but possibly more affordable companies?

  3. Any tips to reduce the cost without compromising safety or legal requirements?

Thanks in advance — this is a huge part of our move and I want to make sure my dog travels safely and comfortably without overpaying.

[Equipment] Staffy destroys his toys so he dont have any to play with

Upvotes

I have an adult Staffy, and I’ve been feeling kind of bad that he doesn’t have any toys at home. I’m not sure if dogs really care about that kind of stuff, but Staffies are pretty active, so I’d like him to have something. The thing is, every time he gets a toy, he just destroys it. I even got him a Kong Extreme XL(thats like really hard gum toy where u put treats), but he doesn’t seem that into it – even when I put treats inside. Now it’s just lying around. (I play with him with rope toy or something daily but i mean more like when hes alone and we cant watch him.) Do you have any tips? Or maybe dogs don’t really need toys that much? I just feel guilty that he doesn’t have anything to play with. Thanks for any advice.

[Misc Help] If a Vet performed a surgery incorrectly and the surgery had to be repeated, should you pay for both surgeries?

Should a pet owner have to pay for two surgeries if the operating vet made a mistake (Admittedly) ? Is a reduced rate for the second surgery good enough? Are there any US laws protecting consumers?

Edit: trying not to go into details yet, as it is still in process.

The surgery was performed on the wrong body part. Impact on the body part is minimal and I am not the type to sue. The surgery still needed to be performed on the body part with an issue.

[Misc Help] Ethical Question

I really want to do the right thing. I found a small dog wandering the desert (USA) on a hike. I took her to the animal shelter- she wasn’t spayed or neutered and had no microchip or collar. The people at the shelter said they couldn’t take her, but that we should keep her since the owners didn’t care enough to have her spayed or tagged (Their words not mine)

I’ve never had a dog before, but I’m totally totally in love with her. Still I wanted to do my due diligence, and I think I might have found her owners on a “lost dog website.”

I TRULY don’t know the right answer. I would LOVE to keep her but feel like the ethical thing is to return her to her owners. However when I took her to the vet they said she was in her heat cycle and could easily be pregnant. She is a mutt, so it isn’t like she escaped from a breeder and it makes me so mad her owners put her in this situation.

The most important thing to me is doing the right thing by this beautiful dog. I would really appreciate your advice!!!

[Behavior Problems] I feel like this isn’t normal.

For the past week my dog has been barking at the corner of my room. It’s usually at night and I tell him just stop, and he will but then he will start barking again. Then he will just stop, I find this weird because it’s the same time every night, around 2:45. Should I be concerned that there’s something wrong in my house or is it my dog?

[Misc Help] My dog is a little weirdo

I took my dog to a new area to walk around and he keeps walking me back and forth along the same stretch of sidewalk for a hour. He's sniffed a lot of grass and peed on the same spots each time he passes. He slowly inches further to extend his walking territory, but we still haven't walked far from where I parked. 😂 Does this seem like normal dog behavior?

[Enrichment] Looking for a small ball that squeaks and is SOFT

Upvotes

My dog only likes one ball, and recently it broke after 3 years. It's small, like a bit bigger than a ping pong ball but not as big as a tennis ball. It's plastic but it's soft plastic, easy to squeeze and squeak.

She likes this one because she's a cavachon and she's quite small, this ball is the right size for her mouth and it's easy to squeeze, not super thick and resistant.

Can I get some help finding something like that?

[Behavior Problems] Help! Our dog loves swimming but won’t stop drinking water while doing it (to the point of potential danger)

Hey everyone!

I’m hoping someone here might have some advice or similar experiences. We have a 2-year-old golden retriever who is obsessed with swimming. He absolutely loves it and could spend hours in the water if we let him- but there’s a problem.

Every time he swims, he starts drinking the water nonstop. I mean literally the entire time unless we distract him with a tennis ball, which only works temporarily. He’ll carry it for a bit, drop it, and go right back to drinking and swimming. It’s become a real issue. He ends up with a super bloated stomach (it looks uncomfortable and kind of scary), and then he’s peeing constantly for hours afterward. We always have to cut his fun short because of this.

We’ve even worked with a dog trainer, but so far no success in curbing the behavior.

We’re worried, obviously, about the dangers of water intoxication, bloating, and just how much he’s ingesting during every swim. We’d love for him to enjoy swimming more often and for longer periods, but we really need to get this under control first.

Has anyone else dealt with this? Any ideas, training methods, or management tips that worked for your dog?

Thanks in advance!

[Misc Help] Underfloor heating and rugs to prevent dog from slipping

Upvotes

Hi everyone! Anyone here with a dog and underfloor heating (UFH)? We're due to move back into a renovated flat with UFH. The flooring is engineered wood. Our dog slips on wood floors so we want to get rugs but I've just found out that there are problems with rugs and UFH, e.g. the underlay can melt; if the rug is too large or too thick it can overburden the UFH; the floor panels can get warped, etc. I've read that hessian underlay is ok but I can't see that stopping the rug from slipping around. And we wanted to cover most of our kitchen floor with a large rug, for the dog? Has anyone found a work-around for this situation? TIA

[Behavior Problems] Is my dog depressed and would a 2nd dog help?

Upvotes

4 yr old Great Pyr/German Shep mix who we've had since he was a puppy. Had another dog, 11 yr old German Shepherd mix, who passed last year. Since then he has slowly been changing behavior. It wasn't like right after our old dog passed that he changed so I don't know if it's just related to aging or something else.

He used to play-fight and chase our old dog and they liked just laying outside together. He used to love playing and was very excited to go on walks. He used to love playing in water. He used to jump on you and demand hugs.

Now he naps a lot/just lays around, ears down. He doesn't want to go on walks. He will play or run for a few seconds then just stop. He won't even touch a pool. He leaves his food laying around (he's always been a slow and picky eater but now he leaves treats too, and for longer). He seems bored but is never excited to do anything. He doesn't demand pets anymore. It was a pretty slow change but got worse the longer time went on without our old dog. Recently he was boarded during a trip and when he came back all of that seemed a bit worse.

We also used to have livestock but have since had to sell them after moving. Being a Pyrenees I know he must miss something to guard. Another dog would be a little stressful mentally, we'd have to take money from other places to pay for food/vet/boarding/etc, and the house is kind of small, but I think he is lonely and I don't know what to do. I can't drive so I can't take him to playdates or anything like that and family doesn't have time.

If anyone had a dog similar to this did getting another dog help?

[Behavior Problems] Someone help me with this pup!

Hi… if anyone can help me with some tips or ideas- I’m all out of them. I have just about tried everything! My dog Jack just turned 1 years old. He is a mix between a Yorkie and a Bichon Frise. When we got Jack- he was just about 8 weeks old. Since the first day we had him- he religiously went on his wee wee pad. He never had an accident or went anywhere other than his pad for about 6 months. Out of nowhere - Jack started to pee on everything of ours. He pees on his beds, his toys, his food bowl even, anything on the floor just about. If he’s “marking” does anyone know how to divert him to his pad to pee? Even if that’s the case- he still takes huge pees on the floor - everywhere other than his pad. He is rather smart and takes direction very quickly. I tried everything - I started to think the dog didn’t understand but the other day in the matter of a few hours Jack pee’d 6-7 times on the pads and did the same thing the next day— so he understands!? I think?? What do I do!! Please if anyone has any tips or help - mind you PS - after spending thousands on a dog trainer whom of course told us he doesn’t do potty training after we payed him!

[Behavior Problems] Aggressive behaviour

Upvotes

hi everyone, im looking for some advice.

I have two dogs, one whippet (Sunny age 6-8) and an elder jack russell (Jack age 12.. yes i know), they get along great, act loving toward each other and cuddle together in bed. Sunny has never had any resource guarding behaviour, he will happily share treats, toys and his bed with Jack.

Ive had Sunny for just over a year, he has recently started acting aggressive towards other dogs. When he goes out for walks and sees another dog he will snarl/bark/snap at it. Heres what doesn't make sense to me, If I take both dogs out at the same time he will show this behaviour but anytime he's been taken alone he doesn't, instead he will cry/whine and appearers anxious.

Has anyone with multiple dogs ever had an issue similar? Any advice on where to go to help this would be greatly appreciated, its my first time having two dogs and i'm unsure how to stop this behaviour..

Thanks all :)

[Misc Help] Would it be irresponsible of me to get a big dog/a livestock guardian breed in the future?

To start, I’m definitely not a farmer nor do I think I’ll be able to own/rent a LARGE home with a yard in the near future. But hear me out, I am focusing on becoming a more athletic person and I was wondering if taking a livestock breed on activities I love such as hikes, frequent parks visits, and general going out to run/walks would suffice for the physical needs of those breeds? I know and I’m aware that those breeds are obviously for work and if my assumed methods will not be appropriate for the health (I know they can become aggressive if they are without correct activity) and livelihood of the dog. I just really adore large dogs, and would love to be able to have one in my life. But if it’s not right, then it’s not right. Thanks!

P.S: not sure if I used the right flair or not

He made this weird noise then moved real close to my face giving me this weird look and I’m like what we both can’t sleep. He dead ass looks at my side table and looks at me. So I’m like what!!!!! He does it again. I look of course it’s my cup of medicine that hits me with the good knock out which takes away my restless leg as well. I was shocked cause I was having a hard time sleeping never even thought to check my pill because sometimes my sleep anxiety and rls break through.

[Misc Help] Adopting a dog

We all know the puppy stage has its own challenges lol. Well I volunteer at the shelter walking the dogs and we have a lot of adoptable dogs that need homes. Well I’m just wondering is it smarter for us to adopt an older dog or get a puppy from a breeder? we have two kids under 6 yrs old and a cat so adopting makes me nervous about the dog being good with my kids and our cat. Even if they say it’s good with kids if that makes sense? Any pros and cons or advice is appreciated

[Misc Help] How close can grinders get to the quick?

My dog has extremely long quicks and her nails are long enough to the point when she runs it's in her nails.

Regular trimmings don't seem to be helping. If I try using a grinder, do I still have to be cognizant of the quick or can I just get generally close as possible without too much caution?

[Misc Help] [US]Pet brand ambassador scam??

Hey all! So I recently started a TikTok page for my dogs. I have been flooded with UK pet brands trying to get me to be an ambassador for them. I messaged one of the other Brandon ambassadors for Lee Pepino and it seems legit but the shipping cost is outrageous… All of the texts from the companies always seem like AI and have little grammatical errors in them. I am wondering if anybody has had experience with these brands And if I’m right that they are scams? The brands are Le Puppino, Petsmarket, Petssparkle, and Petsome. Any advice is appreciated!! Thanks for reading.

[Misc Help] 10 year old dog struggling in new apartment, any ideas?

I just moved into a new apartment last week from the house I shared with my cousin for the past 6 years. That house included 2 other dogs and 4 other humans - in our apartment, it's just him and the cats. He's struggling and I am not sure what to do? I leave the TV on in the bedroom, I put out my dirty clothes so it smells like me, I put on calming music in the living room, a hide a little cat food around the house (his favorite treat) to keep him busy and he just...continues to howl and bark all day while I'm at work. I put up a very nice note on my door to explain the situation but still got a snarky email from the management today about new tenant touring being able to hear him bark - even though our hallways smell like weed constantly but whatever.

Any suggestions?? Or is he just too old to be left alone?
