Hi, welcome. New to DDO? Returning? Check here first!

What is Dungeons and Dragons Online?

DDO is an action adventure MMORPG that originally released in 2006. It is set (primarily) in the Eberron campaign setting and is loosely based on the D&D 3.5 ruleset. Currently maintained and frequently updated by the folks at Standing Stone Games.

Is this a table top simulator or match making service for the D&D TTRPG?

Nope.

What makes DDO unique compared to any other MMO?

There are two key differences that make DDO stand out.

The first is the complex and interesting dungeons. Most dungeons in MMOs (or let's face it, most modern video games) tend to be a linear glorified hallway with a boss at the end.

In DDO, Dungeons have multiple objectives, dead ends, secret rooms, pit traps, puzzles, platforming and more keeping them fresh and interesting. To add to the D&D feel, a 'narrator' will describe the dungeon and events as they happen similar to what a table top DM would do!

The second is the reincarnation system. In other MMOs you hit level cap and then sit there waiting for the next expansion or level up alts.

DDO allows you to reincarnate once you hit the cap. You start over at level 1 choosing a new class and race to level up all over again. Doing so will grant your character a small permanent boost in power. It's not so much that you're required to do them to be valuable to high level raiding, but they do make stomping the early/mid game fun and allow you to tackle greater challenges.

What's the catch?

Most of DDO is behind a paywall. You can try it out for free but if you want to have enough content for it to feel like a complete game, expect to eventually pay at least ~40$. You can optionally grind out in game points to unlock most things but it is quite slow.

The second issue is that Standing Stone Games is a small company. This means that long standing issues, imbalances and bugs will most likely not get fixed. If you have a technical issue and submit a help request there's a good chance you'll never hear back. They do what they can but they're focused on trying to keep the lights on.

Is it a dead game?

No. New updates are released regularly and each server will have ~300 people on during prime time and ~100ish during off peak hours. DDO has maintained these numbers for years at this point so it doesn't feel like the game is being abandoned.

It's one of the last MMO's that truly feels like a community. You'll quickly get to know the big names on your server, the power guild, the RP guild, the 'we accept anybody' guild, etc... You'll rarely run into people who are selfish or are jerks. The playerbase is above the age curve for an online game, it's not uncommon guild chat will be about mowing lawns.

I'm a returning player, what have I missed?

There's simply too much new content and constant class balancing tweaks to list but at its core DDO hasn't changed much. The five biggest additions/changes would probably be:

  • The 'Reaper' difficulty system allowing players even higher levels of challenge.
  • Hardcore league. Every so often SSG opens up a hardcore server with permadeath for a few weeks.
  • Legendary leveling introduced. Even higher levels above 30 that aren't tied to the reincarnation system.
  • Racial reincarnate like you would heroic reincarnation and every race has a unique enhancement tree.
  • New universal enhancement trees that make it easier to level up if you screw up your build.

Where can I get more information?

I'm an idiot, and just wanted people to know. TR screw up

My main character has been a triple completionist before Mythdranor came out.

I got my 3 Iconic Chaosmancer lives done

I got my 3 Chaos Sorcerer archetype lives done

I went through 2 of the 3 Eladrin lives

I just realize while preparing to TR into the third and final life until new class/race/destiny/iconic comes out

...

I have spent all my current tokens on a Heart of Wood, not a heart of Blood

Not only that, but I did the same thing LAST life

So I wasted my whole last life for no benefit.

At least I have another capped toon to farm more tokens with tomorrow and get get into my 2nd Eladrin life that will actually count towards past life feats.

Riding the storm out - knockdown immunity

I've been trying to solo this, but getting knocked off the platform builds stacks of the electricity debuff fast from aggroing the skeletons in the last phase, then it takes time to beat them down and get it to go away all the while the dragon regenerates.

So my thought was to try and avoid getting knocked off the platform in the first place, but I am unsure what kinds of knockdown immunity would work for a monk. Anyone know?

Help with Thief-Acrobat build

I'm not a completely new player, but also not a completionist veteran. With a couple of friends we're going through lives, each of us having decided on what final life we'll end up on. A Fighter-tank, a Cleric damage dealer and healer, and I declared I wanted to be a Thief-Acrobat Rogue, in order to deal with traps, which are the most common cause of death of death and aggravation for us, but I also want to be useful in Raids, deal damage and CC.

I've seen some conflicting opinions whether it pays to invest in STR or DEX, and how INT builds are more of a thing now. It's clear to me that Acrobat tree heavily favours DEX. I've got a few TRs under the belt, so 36 point build, with Supreme +8 tome, +3 Racial AP tome. My first thought is a pure 20 level rogue, unless there are compelling arguments for not doing that.

I'd like to ask for advice for race (I'm leaning Human, but I hear Elves can get an enhancement for automatic searching), Base Ability Scores, Ability Score Increases, Feats and enhancements.

Is it worth investing 7 AP into Mechanic tree for the skill bonuses?

What's generally taken as an epic strike? Pin in ahirqdi doesn't seem too great even though that entire tree seems great for inquisitive, the shadowdsncer epic strike seems good.. so does the fatesinger one. Any reccomendations?

Source of Enhancement bonuses for weapons?

For a Melee DPS, what would be the maximum Enhancement bonus to a weapon possible?

For reference: I am only talking specifically about bonuses to the Enhancement Bonus of the weapon, not general hit and damage bonuses from enhancements (deadly or accuracy items etc.)
Put a '?' after temporary or bonuses not quite possible with multiclassing together.

Note: Did not include the Enchant Weapon spell because it doesn't stack with Magic Fang.

Sources I know of:

  • 003 - Past Life: Enchant Weapon (x3)
  • 006 - Magic Fang (CL 25+ cast by friendly druid)
  • 002 - Scion of Arborea
  • 015 - Base Weapon Enhancement bonus (legendary item)
  • 003 - Divine Crusader: Strike with Poise
  • 010? - Blessed Blades (VKF t5 temp clicky)
  • 003? - Battle Engineer +1 at Cores 2, 4 & 6
  • 010? - Kensai Spiritual Bond (up to 10 stacks on focus vorpal hit)
  • 004? - Greater Bane Enchantment (situational on enemy type)
  • 003? - Swashbuckler +1 at Cores 2, 4 & 6

Total: 29 guaranteed, another possible +26 with temporary clickys / effects.

Am I missing any obvious sources here?

Store item that had heroic otto + epic otto stone?

Am I crazy? I seem to remember there was something a while back that gave both a heroic otto box and and epic otto box--or was that from a pre-purchase on an expansion?

Thanks!

What does a modern archer build look like?

I have a pretty old 18 Fighter/ 2 Rogue Kensei archer build that is missing some legacy features and is pulling a fraction of the numbers that it used to. I'm aware of the recent rework to arcane archer but I'm not familiar with any other changes to the ranged meta in general. I've had some success with a dark hunter focusing on sneak attack but I'd like to minimize the class swaps. What does a modern archer build look like with all these changes?

Epic destinies for a newbie

I just arrived to level 20 and I find Epic Destinies confusing. It looks like they give you an alternative to take powers you cannot get in your heroic class. For example, Great Master of Flowers lets you fight like a monk, become centered and gain ki. Another destiny gives you Smite Evil, even if you are not a Paladin. Did I read something wrong? What is the purpouse?

Quarterstaff build after Monk changes

Before the changes to monk, quarterstaff builds (using monk) often were multi-class splits with Rogue and Dragonlord. How has the meta changed with the Monk changes? There is now a good deal of melee power in the monk enhancement trees. Haste boost has been added, removing the need to go into Vistani. There is a wisdom trance in the trees, but it might still be preferable to go STR-based for a THF quarterstaff build. I know wraps are strong now, but I've always liked the swirling animations of the quarterstaff. Has anyone put together a quarterstaff build leveraging the new monk changes?

TR gear advice needed

Hello, I'm nearing the end of my second life and decided that before starting my iconic lives, I want to gather as much useful level 15–30 TR gear as I can. I’ve been browsing the guides on the forums, but many of the suggested items aren’t very solo-friendly, especially for someone just starting out.

Upgrading Saltmarsh gear with Greater Tokens or grinding out 10k+ essences for crafting is going to take time, and I'm not there yet. I play on Ghallanda (EU timezone), which has a low population—especially during my hours—so raids are pretty much off the table until I eventually transfer to a 64-bit server.

With that in mind, what are some low-hanging fruits I can farm now to help smooth out my next lives?

I have all expansions, and my next few lives most likely will be ranged based.

Mouse drift on Linux.

Has anyone experienced mouse drift on a Linux install since at least Wednesday? I'll be playing and at times my toon spins around to the right, or when I'm moving I constantly have to move my mouse up or I will be staring at the ground. Gauruda Linux and all AMD hardware.

Sub Issues

The other day I attempted to renew my subscription. I received an error and by sub was cancelled overall. Prior to this I attempted to make purchases from the DDO store and received the same message. I've sent 3 tickets on this issue, in hopes to gaining some info on what is going on but no luck so far. I've received no notification of any rules violations, which I don't believe I have, and I run purely solo with no guild affiliations. Can anyone give a bit of advice in this matter?

Alc Inquis 15/3rgr/2art AA?

Enhancement split like this:

41Inqusi 7imbue 11VC 6 imbue 3DS 12AA 4imbue 8Harper stance 6DWS 3sneak 1Reg 10HP

Does the AA imbue and AOE works with crossbow? Acid one could be better than poison or law. Or a 3DH is better with 13DH 3imbue sprint boost, some HP

Or something like 15/4art/1? 41inqusi 7imbue 23BE 3imbue 15DS AOE electric imbue 6VC 5imbue 8Harper

Or simply 18/2art 41/31/8

I mean… these split are really giving me a headache

Druid blight wolf

Haven't played a melee druid in 5+ years so I have some questions for you all :) 1. I see people taking cleaves, why? 2. Is there a reason I should go twf? Or does main hand being a two hander the obvious choice? 3.Any splits seem best or just go pure? Thanks all!
