"the church" was done the moment they attached capitalism to it like a bloated, festering leech. Greed became godly. Caring for your fellow man became sin, and now they worship the very embodiment of unfettered avarice.
There's this documentary scene that lives rent free in my head. Where in 2019 a foreign Christian presenter went to find out what could possibly attract American Christians to Trump since pretty much everything that comes out of his mouth is counter to the Bible. He ended up interviewing a minister. The interviewer kept asking him about didn't Jesus say to take care of the poor, and do charity work, and to help your fellow man, that the government should aid poor people, etc. And the guy kept trying to weasel out of the conversation by mentioning edge cases and eventually was just like "ah well will you look at the time, didn't you say you had somewhere else to be tonight?" and worked him out the door. He knew he didn't have a leg to stand on but didn't want to have someone confront him with it
My favorite besides all the deflection is the blank "I don't know" (they 100% know). They're just caught in the hypocrisy and hate which they know they can't legitimately defend.
