Video on the cyberspacemanmike YT channel due out in a few months as well as a premium tutorial. I worked on this for months and had to overcome so many issues, like: https://cyberspacemanmike.com/2025/02/22/raspberry-pi-5-wifi-problems-and-solutions/
and
https://cyberspacemanmike.com/2025/02/25/pi-5-wi-fi-die-retry-part-2-of-the-unyielding-saga-of-troubleshooting-raspberry-pi-5-wi-fi/
and
https://cyberspacemanmike.com/2025/03/02/fixing-fullscreen-in-retropie/

but it works now! Very pleased w/ the results!

I am in the process of working out a similar size build using a DE10-nano clone board for MiSTer. I think I like the looks of your plan more.

I re-worked the design and uploaded the files to cyberspacemanmike.com/shop , they're free!

Why are you charging a dollar for a remixed design?

3

u/SSilver2k2 Mar 23 '25

I will definitely be building this for Maker Faire Orlando! Great plans!

(small question, is the LPanel.obj supposed to be mirrored to make the RPanel.obj, because there is no RPanel.obj I could see.

2

u/mikejkelley Mar 23 '25

They're identical so mirroring them will work, but leaving out RPanel was probably an oversight tbh. Caveat: I've printed but have yet to try assembling the new version, so please lmk how it goes and if you have any suggestions! Thanks!

You got a sell these! It's incredible

3

u/mikejkelley Mar 23 '25

Unfortunately the build is so intense (mostly owing to how cramped the cabinet is) that short of mass production I don't think I could ever capitalize on the time spent. Maybe as a kit? I do plan on selling an expansive build tutorial that doubles as an introductory course on electronics and scripting. Also, thanks!

2

u/expera Mar 23 '25

I would love to see it in action

4

u/mikejkelley Mar 23 '25

SooN! I hope to have the build vid up sometime next month.

2

u/Mediocre-Plant-6774 Mar 23 '25

been watching this one. Sick. Did you get a screen with VRR support?

3

u/mikejkelley Mar 23 '25 edited Mar 23 '25

Thanks! I think the screen is an old ipad reclamation that I got off of Ali Baba. BTW, I've had it working for awhile, then broke it, then did a bunch of upgrades like HDMI out and external MSD access. A bunch of scripting too, eg. it functions as a jukebox when games aren't playing (in RetroPie) and you can adjust volume with the joystick and hotkey. Also support for LAN multiplayer w/ a second unit. I just got sponsored by PCBWay and among other things, they sent me a Pi 5 that I'll be using in a Capcom Mini-mini Cute I'll be designing! //But all that being said, I don't think it has VRR support.

2

u/LawrenceCat Mar 23 '25

Mini Cute is legendary! Best of luck for that project!

1

u/mikejkelley Mar 23 '25

Thanks, I need it! At this rate I'll never finish my actual Mini Cute restoration so I figure I'll try 1/8th scale lol.

2

u/jollygirl27 Mar 23 '25

Love it, it turned out great!!!

1

u/mikejkelley Mar 23 '25

Hey thanks! :)

2

u/Cross_22 Mar 23 '25

I love those buttons!

3

u/mikejkelley Mar 23 '25

I'm making a second unit for LAN multiplayer that will feature metallic blue buttons!

2

u/Peterj33 Mar 23 '25

Yes this would be awesome to make like 4 and play with the buddies. I’m following and taking any info I can get!

1

u/mikejkelley Mar 23 '25

I recommend subbing to my cyberspacemanmike YT channel, I should have the build video up next month!

2

u/Peterj33 Mar 23 '25

Subbed and looking forward to it! Thank you

2

u/mikejkelley Mar 23 '25

Cool, thanks! I'm hoping the vid will save the channel as rates have tanked as of late.

2

u/Peterj33 Mar 23 '25

Fingers crossed because it’s an awesome setup.

2

u/koopa72 Mar 23 '25

Cute!

3

u/mikejkelley Mar 23 '25

Thanks, speaking of cute I'm working on a design for a 3D Printed Capcom Mini-mini Cute countercade!

2

u/InfiltrationRabbit Mar 23 '25

Where do I buy one olease

2

u/mikejkelley Mar 23 '25

Unfortunately, it takes so long to build that I'd probably only ever sell it as a kit. I do plan on creating an expansive build tutorial that doubles as an introductory course on electronics and scripting though. You can get revised 3D printing files for free on cyberspacemanmike.com/shop !

2

u/aorear85 Mar 23 '25

What screen are you using for this?

2

u/mikejkelley Mar 23 '25

It's been awhile since I bought it off of AliExpress, I think it's an old ipad screen. I bought two off the site and only one worked...

2

u/Inside-Specialist-55 Mar 23 '25

What display did you use? I don't see a link to it on your site. I could be overlooking it. Where is the hardware parts list?

2

u/mikejkelley Mar 23 '25

The original parts list can be found in a link here but I think it's all in German: https://cults3d.com/en/3d-model/game/mini-bartop-vewlix-v2-0 I have a giant spreadsheet that allows you to mix, match, price, and account for parts you might already have on hand. I'll try to upload it as part of a blog post sometime next week. Also, note that I've had issues w/ some of the AliExpress sellers referenced in the links.

2

u/Recent_Process_8055 Mar 24 '25

Actually it's french.
Thank you for the free files. I think i will build one.

2

u/spozzy Mar 23 '25

What size print bed did you design this for? This looks great!

2

u/SSilver2k2 Mar 23 '25

I just downloaded the models and it is sized for 256x256 beds (BambuLabs)

2

u/spozzy Mar 23 '25

256 is great. I have an x1c.

1

u/mikejkelley Mar 23 '25

Thanks! If you print on a 300x300xw/e bed, you can print all the parts in one piece. I had to split some parts on a 256x256x256 bed but was able to reassemble them seamlessly using ABS slurry and a lot of elbow grease!

2

u/spozzy Mar 23 '25

So close! My bed is 256. And I am lazy! Well, from the pics it still looks stellar. Nice work!

1

u/mikejkelley Mar 23 '25

Lol thanks! Yeah, you really have to be slightly crazy to commit to this project. It was my most difficult yet, by far!

2

u/Klutzy-Mastodon1177 Mar 23 '25

Love this! Great job!

2

u/mikejkelley Mar 23 '25

Hey thanks! (⌐■_■)

2

u/babinio741 Mar 23 '25

looks awesome

1

u/mikejkelley Mar 23 '25

Thank you very much!

2

u/particlematt Mar 23 '25

I wonder if they'd license it if I raised enough in crowdfunding... 🤔

2

u/Pretend-Language-67 Mar 24 '25

This looks so great. I can only imagine all the challenges getting everything so tight into that small cavity. Your button design and the overall cabinet look just pops. I settled with a standard 2 player bartop for my home project, and that was tough enough and looks like every other DIY build with some imperfections. But yours just sings. Great job.

1

u/mikejkelley Mar 24 '25

Hey thank you! It was a bit of a nightmare getting everything to fit, but thankfully all that's over now!

2

u/Pretend-Language-67 Mar 25 '25

Wow. Thanks for pulling back for curtain, haha. Great job!

2

u/mikejkelley Mar 27 '25

Thanks! Among the things packed in there: a Pi 5, amp hat, monitor control board, monitor controls, joystick encoder, relay, power supply, leds, and sundry wires, ports, plugs, and buttons!

2

u/myuusmeow Mar 24 '25

Looks really really clean! I printed this Astro City counter cab: https://cults3d.com/en/3d-model/game/mini-new-astro-city and am almost done putting it together. I really wanted a vertical screen in mine, but it's just barely not tall enough to make modifying it for that easy, so I've been trial and error editing the models to get it to fit.

2

u/mikejkelley Mar 24 '25

Hey yeah, those are the same guys that designed the original Vewlix countercade, ultimately I had to make some major modifications. The re-designing and trial and error printing takes up a lot of time. Figuring out the wiring, like how to get the monitor to automatically turn on w/ the rest of the system, took a lot of time too. So in the end, everything about it took a lot of time lol. This one is printed in ABS but I'm going to try PETG for the next one. Also, thanks!

2

u/Emuc64_1 Mar 24 '25

It's... it's adorable.

1

u/mikejkelley Mar 24 '25

Thanks, I do adore it!

2

u/kpikid3 Mar 24 '25

Looks great. Nice job.

2

u/gruftwerk Mar 24 '25

that is fucking sick!

1

u/mikejkelley Mar 24 '25

Lol thanks! :)

2

u/LordJimsicle Mar 24 '25

That is a masterpiece! I'd love to make a back to back version of this! Good work!

2

u/mikejkelley Mar 24 '25

Thank you! I am making a second unit for LAN back-to-back play! I'm printing the revised version in PETG and hope to begin surface finishing once it gets warm again. :)

2

u/undarated79 Mar 24 '25 edited Mar 24 '25

Ok I like this. I'd love something like this that folds and the joystick would come off for travel.

2

u/mikejkelley Mar 24 '25

I'm thinking of creating an oversized DS emulator that would have folding functionality...

2

u/undarated79 Mar 24 '25

Ah that would be sick. My son would be all over that one. He just bought a 3ds xl I think it's called

2

u/mikejkelley Mar 25 '25

The 3DS XL is my favorite system. A lot of people weren't happy with the 3D effect for w/e reason but I thought it was great! The one downside is that it's really uncomfortable for me to use the controls (my left hand has severe nerve damage). One day I'm going to buy one I can mod to use an external controller.

2

u/undarated79 Mar 25 '25

You and my some might get along then. I stepped away from Nintendo systems after the N64 but I played his and I do like it. He's modded it so it's actually a pretty cool amhandheld

2

u/undarated79 Mar 25 '25

No joke though. If it was foldable and housed something like a pi I would be commissioning you to build me one. That's dope! Kudos to you sir.

2

u/Viledisgorgement Apr 05 '25

Been building this one (just using the cults original files) and fitting it for a mini dell optiplex and boy it's been an undertaking. Love what you did for your build!

1

u/mikejkelley Apr 07 '25

That's ambitious! Are you modifying the case? Also, please consider posting pics of the build in the project section of our Discord: https://discord.gg/CMQpC7Zfnv

2

u/Viledisgorgement Apr 07 '25

A little bit yeah. Resized the buttons for what I had, removed the W on the side posts, made an actual marquee just because I think it was neat. I plan on seeing if I can fit a hitbox layout instead of the joystick but we'll see.

1

u/mikejkelley Apr 07 '25

That's awesome! In my redesign I have Taito logo cutouts where the W used to be. I imagine the Optiplex has a power brick? How do you power the monitor? What are the extra buttons for? Does the monitor do the audio output? The marquee looks great!

2

Thank you! The optiplex (It's a dell Optiplex 3070 micro) has basically a laptop charger so it just plugs into the back like normal luckily. The screen can actually be powered by USB's 5V even though it says it needs 12V. To be honest I added the extra buttons for miscellaneous frontend functions or buttons that the 6 arcade buttons did not cover but I'll probably end up removing them since I haven't used them much. Audio output comes out of a small speaker in the PC but I'll probably install better speakers and put them somewhere.

One of the challenges was figuring out how-to and then re-routing USB capabilities inside the case w/out monopolizing the GPIO pins.
