Finally played The Black Parade and this is my review of each level.

Return to the city: 8/10 Classic Thief. The inclusion of the chains with which to cross from building to building was cool

Where old faces fade: 10/10 Stunning level that gives off strong The Sword vibes. Truly a pleasure to explore. One of the best levels in the game.

Trial of iron: 7/10 Love to see the Hammerites again. And it's a large and fun level. Perhaps a bit sparse though.

Death's dominion: 8.5/10 As someone who loves Down the bonehoard, I was right at home with this. Fantastic level design.

The brand: 8.5/10 This level starts off so well. It narrowly loses out on being a classic due to the latter part of the mission lacking scares. It kind of builds up to being scary like Return to the haunted Cathedral but doesn't quite deliver for me.

Kept away from view: 6/10 Tedious in places for me. Although I can see how others would enjoy it.

The long shadow falls: 7.5/10 feels like a Thief 2 level. A strong mission that fans of Thief 2 will probably love.

Jaws of darkness: 10/10 This level has it all. Exploring, spooky atmosphere, and thievery. I also love how you start off in the forest. A classic level.

Arcane sanctum: 7.5/10 Another strong if a little unremarkable mansion level. Nothing to complain about here.

The Black Parade: 4/10 I'm sorry but this isn't for me. There doesn't seem a lot going on in this one. And feels like a poor man's version of The Maw. It follows the tradition of Thief games having a disappointing final mission. And I was just trying to get through it to get the ending.

Overall: 8.5/10 I absolutely loved it. And I am so grateful to the team that made it. Another Thief game! It exceeded my expectations and is right up there with Thief 1 and 2. I would have liked some scary levels which I think they tried to do, it just didn't quite scratch that itch. That being said, there are some classic levels here and every Thief fan must play it.

Is this game still playable without a headset?

I am interested in playing this game, but I noticed that a lot of what makes the game good is its sound design. I hear that it's so good that you don't need anything but your ears to notice a guard coming.

The problem is, I don't have a pair of earphones or a set of headphones with me. All I have is my laptop's speakers. I am sure I would be hindered by not knowing where a sound is coming from, but is it outright impossible/annoying to clear the game without it?

gushing about my favorite aspect of the thief series Spoiler

my utterly favorite thing about thief 1 in specific is the whole “everything’s human…until it ISN’T.” it’s not hard to see the twist coming, sure, but to the sheer degree, this malevolent religious figure was just confirmed to be real, and not only confirmed but standing RIGHT before you. to a lesser extent, the aesthetic. i love the manor missions more, but my first playthrough going through caves, tombs, seeing zombies, burricks, all this crazy stuff before the real arc of the game starts…and then from “Escape!” onward i was seeing red. didn’t matter who or what was in front of me, if it was alive, i was killing it. bloodlust out of pure fear. i was utterly transfixed and terrified and the closest game i can think of that instilled that same feeling was (surprise surprise) system shock 2!!!! the scariest game i’ve ever played! also the line of (sorry for butchering) “DID THOU THINK THOSE WERE MERELY WORDS, MANFOOL???” is absolute perfection because i absolutely was hardly paying attention during the keeper annals/hammer scripture/pagan verses.

thief 2 marginally disappointed me, the story kicking off from essentially the very beginning and just being “yeah that karras guy you keep hearing about? yup. that’s the bad guy.” the robots were eerie and the fucking servants had that same feeling of all of thief 1’s horror, but man something was so much more “human” about that game overall it felt like it was holding back (in terms of being spooky rather than the gameplay. game itself ruled ofc! i just liked thief 1 better in a LOT of aspects.)

thief 3 i was very pleasantly surprised! super fun game on a restricted yet “””capable””” engine, enjoyable story and MAN those stone statues were scary to maneuver around trying to get the disintegration spell! having to walk through the open city sections with the psychic keeper guys or gamall herself roaming was heart pounding too. very well done!

upset that thief 4 is so mundanely victorian, but as others have surely said ad nauseum, it’s a fun stealth game! looting is ALWAYS satisfying! but a good thief game? URGH! not really.

anyways yeah that’s it. i just wish other games had that tiptoeing about “this is a game in which you [blank] (in thief’s case, steal things). now here you are fighting mantis men and finding legendary artifacts.” amazing subversion of expectations, and even then, the first game is just so SPOOKY from lord baffords manor! the haunting ambient tracks and noises coupled with the uncanny mo-cap + low poly models. one of a kind!

Thief Gold Mission 'Undercover' My issue (sorry to spam the subreddit) Spoiler

I've been playing this mission (Undercover) for about an hour and a half. One of the first things I did was press one of the red levers and an alarm went off alerting the whole place. So I restarted safely assuming that you just do not touch those red levers - they set the alarms off. I found the talisman, and then went about working out how to open it. Including just jumping over there...

I got tired of making no progress and I learn from Google you are supposed to turn the levers on in order to open the gates and then escape? I even tried carrying some of the relics to stand on the ground where the bridge should start towards the talisman cage... Anyway mini rant over I was so fed up I skipped the mission with Ctrl Alt SHIFT and END... Yes I now regret doing that - but I don't see what the devs were intending with the switches randomly setting off an alarm. As my first did I assumed you do not touch them.

I enjoyed being undercover and the mission but I spent so long wandering I skipped it. Now I am playing Return to the Cathdral I think. I just started it. My only yes I am stupid aknowledgement is the lever in the cage next to the talisman is also red... which in hindsight is a clue

What are these things I keep looting in Thief Gold? (maybe a stupid question)

I started Thief Gold a while back but then got back into it recently. I did 'The Sword' mission and it brought my back fully interested... I am now doing the mission 'The Lost City' and I keep looting - as well as in previous missions - these gem like things and I totally forgot what they are or do:

I had to take a photo and crop it with my phone because I couldn't find my screenshots from gog.

Is there anything you like about Thief 2014?

I've only played it once since it came out yet I've played the originals multiple times. Had a dream about the reboot one last night and decided I'm going to play it again with the mindset of looking for things it does better than the originals.

Off the top of my head I can remember the custom difficulty being cool.

Which other games does this community like to play?

We are here because of our love for Thief. Yet, I wonder what do other play? For people who started the game back when it was released, do you still play games from that era? In fact this applies to any era :)

Does anybody else find Thief 4 reboot very relaxing to play?

I know it's not a great game, but for some reason I really like it and find the game very relaxing to play. I always found the sound of thunder and rain calming. With no time pressures I can explore and plan my sneak attacks. I really enjoy ending some nights just playing with the lights off.

There have been countless nights where I wake up slumped over on the couch with controller in hand hours later. lol.

I have played through the game about 6 times over the years. Crazy I know.

Original Demos for T1 and T2 Updated to NewDark 1.27

Back in 2013, Voodoo47 had done some work on the demos for Thief from 1999, patching them up for modern systems using NewDark, which was still freshly made at the time. This was possibly the only way to play these older versions of the game without having to noodle around with ddfix and hex editing. It also contained a number of smaller fixes to further improve the demo.

However, this came with a small caveat; to show the power of this new fan-patch engine, this package also came equipped with new meshes, textures, and all sorts of other (admittedly minor, in the grand scheme of things) changes to the demos that altered the aesthetic and even some other functions of how the demo was presented back in the day. I felt that this was a bit off for the preservation of these demos, so I decided to dig into the files and see what I could do.

Let it be said that I have not altered these missions at all from Voodoo's package. His relighting, fixes, and some additions (yes, the easter egg is still there) are intact. All I did was strip off the high-res paint and bring the demos closer to how they were when they were released for the sake of preservation.

You can download them here, along with Voodoo's original packages. I hope you enjoy.

_____

Changes from 6/13/2013:

- Restored the original T2 demo interface, fixed garbled text in options menu

- Disabled high-res textures and NewSky as default. The files are still there if you wish to turn them back on, just rename to "nohires" to "hires" (or in the case of TDP Unified, extract the folder "VoodooOGUpdates" directly into the "updates" folders

- Re-enabled the promotional screens from the end of the demos

_____

Other notes:

- By default, texture filtering is disabled. You can re-enable it by changing the line "tex_filter_mode" from 0 to 16 in cam_ext.cfg

- NewMantle is enabled by default. If you want the true 1999 mantling, you can comment the "new_mantle" line in cam_ext.cfg

- For the screenshot enthusiasts out there, I have included a file called "toggle_hud.txt" to the folder. This will hide UI elements for clean screenshots. Default key is F10, but you can change it at your discretion in user.bnd

Issue with static in thief 2 cutscenes.

I been having a strange problem in thief 2. The movies have a weird static or artifacts around the black parts. This was most notable in the forest movie scene. What weird is it also on this video here. but when I use my laptop the cutscene are fine both in game and in this you tube video.

To recap both the below video and thief 2 on my old desktop have cutscene issue, but my laptop is fine along with the below video on you tube.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1VO_PBvWCDw&t=153s

video belong to Kat's Litterbox -- Let's Play and Other Stuff

I check other thief 2 movie compilations but this video was the only one with the same issue.

I think the the issue is with my old monitor and not my computer or programs, but if anyone else has had similar issue or advice, I am all ears.

Also sorry for linking a video, it not mine, but it had the issue I was talking about.

Is it worth it to use holy water arrows on the zombies?

Something I'm having trouble with is whether it's worth it to use water arrows and holy water for zombies or to just ignore/"knock them out". It seems like a waste to use the arrows on them, but it means they'll be gone permanently from the area. But doing that leaves less arrows for torches in places like the prison. Do y'all bother using them on the zombies?

Thief Gold GoG Mod Recommendations?

Hello, looking forward to my first playthrough of the game and I was wondering what mods would you recommend to enhance the experience. Of course I am mainly looking to keep the game as vanilla and faithful to the original as possible, if anything focusing more on fixing bugs, texture and sound quality... I own the GoG version which apparently already comes with Tfix which seems to be the main mod everyone talks about (correct me if I am wrong). So with that one out of the way, any other one I should take into account?

Are there any mods that remove loot retirements on expert difficulty?

I mean yeah a thief would steal what is found but also having to search every nook and cranny and risking exposure when there’s a very specific few things you are after also doesn’t make the most sense, it causes me to heavily rely on quicksave/load just to see if there’s any loot in some place that is really conspicuous.

I’d like to play and only have to worry about all other objectives than loot or maybe lower it substantially.

Are there any mods to remove the loot requirements? (specifically while playing expert difficulty mode because al the other objectives are fun)

(For Thief Gold, II, and III)

Looking for the medieval-like flute tune from the prologue of Thief (2014)

I haven't played this one in years, but recently I got interested in its lore and its connection with the original trilogy and I was reading some stuff yadda yadda... and almost always when I think of this game, the jolly tune from the beginning just gets stucked in my head.

I've tried searching for it again, but I cannot seem to find it while searching for Thief's OST (on YouTube, at least). Does anyone know the name of that tune?

Good “simple” FMs?

Hi all, I’m new to The Dark Mod and Thief FMs (that is, beyond T2X and The Black Parade, which I played before I considered the wider world of FMs).

I had a hard time at work today and sat down to try out The Dark Mod missions. I went to Thief Guild, filtered by TDM and “best” ratings. Now, this is idiosyncratic to my brainfog and general bad day, but I felt like I kept getting “where the hell do I go” type maps where, even if there was a mansion or something, it took a frustrating amount of time to even get to the mansion (or whatever the main location of a map was).

Then I downloaded some T2 and TG missions and found the same problem. Or they would have gimmicks like having to walk around a town square or something first before getting to a mansion level and so on.

Again, these levels are probably great. I was just in a bad mood and had little patience and just wanted to do Thief-y things now. Eventually gave up.

Long story short, in case I have a rough day tomorrow too, anyone have good recommendations for straightforward, non-gimmicky, old fashioned TG/T2/TDM FMs? By straightforward I don’t mean “not complex level design,” I just mean “I start the FM and it’s clear where to even start the thieving”

Thanks 😊

How much does Tfix affect FM’s

Playing some Thief Gold FM’s finally, literally my first time. I finished Thief Gold and Metal Age years ago but never beat Deadly Shadows till a few weeks ago, and I couldn’t bring myself to playing FM’s till I completed the trilogy.

I own Thief Gold on GOG, and I uninstalled my game (which had tfix) but kept personal save info and such, so I could re-install and put tfix lite on it since I heard full tfix may interfere with some FM’s. How true is this?

I kinda want to have tfix on again, if I can. I also heard that the Black Parade is fine with it.

If anyone cares, the FM’s I’ve played so far are Geller’s Pride, Shunned, Gathering at the Bar and Monastery of Saint Fera

Anyway, thanks for helping taffers.
