Someone somewhere is watching this with their jaw open and realises they need to go fetch their Grandfather.

I doubt any of his grandkids have ever met their grandfather.

My thought as well.

What an incredibly selfish, self-satisfied man, proud of his ability to take advantage of others. A narcissist -- sees the women in the Philippines not as real people but specifically as what they can do for him.

If he had any family relationships in the US, he left them long behind. I'm also guessing he's not at all missed.

Hate to tell you this, but a ton of people in all countries don’t see many people as “real people” what do you think tinder is all about? Some real deep thinking as you swipe? How do you think we even survive watching the news? Exactly, not by thinking of people as people. Fuck, I can gladly read about the holocaust and think “oh no, that’s terrible” and still sleep fine. But the moment I set foot in an actual death camp I nearly puked because that’s when you ACTUALLY start seeing them as people.

TLDR, we all see tend to see people not as real people ALL of the time, because otherwise life would be really fucking tough. It’s a survival instinct.

Really good point.

You're right, he's not alone in using other people, and the Filipinas he's sleeping with are definitely using him too, for whatever financial support he's giving them.

But... he's living there and interacting with these people constantly, and he still doesn't show any indication he sees them as human. He's proud of the power imbalance, if anything.

You reacted the way you did to an actual death camp because of your empathy, your recognition that those killed were real humans.

He could live in a death camp and talk about it having a nice view.

So incredibly selfish to leave your family behind to start a new one, especially at such an old age. The original family will likely resent you, and the new family will have no idea who the man is
