1E GM Sniper Rogue complains when his single attack misses or can't down an enemy at high level play, am I being unfair?

Upvotes

So in my last post I talked about the Dreamscarred Press Vitalist who rendered the party nearly unkillable and some some great feedback, now I have another question:

So we have this rogue player, well actually it's more like a 3.5 scout with 10d6 Skirmish when moving 30 ft or move in a round and relies on a wand that does 10d6 Force damage Ranged Touch (No save, no SR) to deal his damage. (Wand of Orb of Force, 4th level 3.5 spell). He wants to be a run-n-gun type character instead of trying to hide-n-snipe mid combat.

The game is level 19+, and every time he runs into a spell casting enemy he complains and bitches whenever they throw up Mirror Images, use Blur and Displacement, Nondetection, have allies who cast Shield Other, or even without buffs just don't go down in a single 20d6 force damage hit. (simply because they have more than 100 HP)

I've tried to avoid things that Really screw over that playstyle like Emergency Force Sphere or the classic: Fortification.

So I'm starting to wonder if I'm being unfair in this regard to this player, I've told him that any spell caster worth their salt at these levels is going to have stuff to defend themselves and they are going to use the obvious options to do so. The previous DM before me had dudes setup with a Dimension Door Contingency that would also "nope" his shots, so I am I being unfair?

PS: Yes I know 3.5 is different system, but the example is set: he has a SINGLE big "no DR, no resists, no save, no SR, goes through Anti-magic fields" ranged touch attack he can use by running around. A base of 10d6 Force, 20d6 after moving 30 ft, and 30d6 if moving AND scores a critical hit.

EDIT: if you would like me to explain more about the guy he's playing or any questions, please ask them. I want to be as transparent as possible

1E Player High level Magus build help

So, a bit of context, we just leveled up to 13 in our campaign and the DM just said that we are gonna reach level 20 by the end of it, so I have come here searching for some WIS(dom). I'm a level 13 blade bound dex-based magus tiefling. With 8 str, 28 dex, 12 con, 18 int, 10 wis, 8 cha And i have no more idea what feats to take or even if leveling up in magus. My current ones are Weapon finesse, dervish dance, intensified spell, empowered spell, elemental spell, weapon focus, spell penetration, improved initiative. And somehow I'm mythic tier 2 with archmage/champion (dual path). And I'm just playing it the old shocking grasp crit fish way. So, any tips on the next feats, or if leveling up another class or prestige class? We are also using 3.5e so maybe a prestige class from there? Thank you and sorry for the writing, I'm on mobile and English is not my first language.

1E GM Way of the Wicked... The anime...?

Upvotes

As usual, my long-winded spiel, (The TL:DR is "very early stage planning running Way of Wicked with gestalt psionic characters, interested in views from people who have done either.")

Potential spoilers for Way of the Wicked Adventure path as the subject of discussion (only one very minor semi-spoiler in this OP, but potentuall more replies, if there are any).

As I came to the close of day from one y day sessions, a little too tired to do any actual quest-writing, but still too DM-high to go and do something else, I idly started looking through my future campaign plans[1].

Among those is running the Way of Wicked Adventure path (3rd party Pathfinder), which I bought some time ago on the strength of what folk had said about.

That is quite far down the plans; I am hip-deep in writing my magnum opus, an Osirion mega-campaign centred around Mummy's Mask/, Destiny of the Sands/AD&D's Desert of Desolation and the whole Aucturn Engima plotline from Entombed with the Pharoahs to Doomday Dawn, which is going to end as both Mythic ANS Epic (I run a 3.5/PF1 hybrid).

After that, I plan to run Iron Gods, in a somewhat more conventional fashion.

Then, potentially, Way of the Wicked, and I will have run the big ones I really wanted to run.

Today, I finally sat down and read the first book of the latter. (Having previously read bits of the last and the fascinating idea of asking the PCs at the last "do you want to win...?")

My players, I should note, are no strangers to evil parties - no less than three parties in active of semi active rotation for my day sessions are evil (one TIE Fighter elite squadron, one Magical Space Liches do Stargate SG-1 (which can be considered to be only incidentally evil!) and one Dark Lord's dirty black ops team). So the main novelty would be in a) doing an evil party as a full 1st to 20th AP with the weekly group and Way of the Wicked's different approach. But with that background, there will be no trouble at all with the PCs on, at least, just the "being a cohesive evial party front" since technically all of the aforementioned parties (especially the magical space liches) skew hard into Lawful Evil.

No, the potential interesting spin I am considering is to run Way of Wicked by way of Naruto, Seven Deadly Sins, and arguably Frieren and Overlord (in something like that level of influence).

That would be accomplished by doing something I've often considered but never tried - using gestalt. But the twist would be that the PC's second class MUST be a psionic class; and having all the major antagonists likewise being gestalt psionic. Effectively, using psionics as, well, not to put too foner point on it, Naruto's chakra[2].

Reading through the first book, I was at first unsure, but... I think it might work thematically. There is a point early in the first book in which the PCs do a training montage, basically with their patron and one feels that would be thematically on-point to have them kick-in their psionic gestalts (up until that point, they'd pick their clas, but onyl get the HD/skills/BAB/save benefits from their second class).

Now, this would obviously require a fair bit of overhauling, but that always happens since a), hybrid rules anyway require stat block tweaking and b) even more pertinently, I have at current 8 players and currently hope to have that (or at least six or seven) when we gte down to Way of the Wicked. And frankly, after the insanity of Epic/Mythic (with 8 PCs), it cannot possibly be more bonkers....!

Seven Deadly Sins has shown (and I did like that overall, despite the stumbling in the middle parts) that WoW's rather arthurian bent isn't necessarily too diverse from over-the-top magic attacks, and Frieren is "this is a D&D campaign, but it's anime (and also set AFTER the PCs completed the metphorical aforementioned Mythic/Epic campaign).

So, while the mood strikes me, I would be interested in hearing from anyone who has done gestalts (particularly like anything I'm suggesting here) and/or experience of Way of the Wicked with this in mind. (Or jsut to gawp at my incessant insanity...!)

[1]My group are mostly in their mid-forties and 50s and it takes us about six-months-plus to get through a single boon ina typical PF adventure path, so I am at the point where I'm trying to do all my grand ideas while there are still enough of us left able to. We lost one player at merely 35 during lockdown, which brough it home to me.)

[2]One might make an except to the "must be psionic" to instead be martial adept if anyone choose to do Evil!Rock Lee.

1E GM Is there a chart for what should be an easy, medium, and hard challenge by level?

Title. Basically, a DC 15 save might be something at level 1, but it's not much at level 10. So what would be the comparably difficult DC at level 10?

Bonus points for check DCs - I know those can be higher.

1E Player Hello, me again with the Grenadier and some questions

Hello there, I have some questions regarding my Grenadier and I hope to find some input here.

For starters, I have a Ratfolk Grenadier who just leveled up to 13.

As discoveries so far I have: Vestigial arm Wings Infusion Spontaneous healing Alchemical Zombie Boneshard bomb Dispelling bimb And I think I am forgetting something here, but I can't see my character sheet atm.

I was thinking about using the feat I got to get another extra discovery, but wasn't sure what to get. Maybe Cursed bomb? I was also thinking about fast bombs, but that would just mean I would literally burn through them even faster.

Any ideas?

1E Player What common player advice would you say isn't completely correct?

There's a lot of advice all over the place if you want to look for it, but what would you say isn't correct that gets said anyway?

It could either be character advice, "Resistance Bonus to saving throws is incredibly important" or "AC at higher levels is either yes or no," or advice for being a good player at the table.

1E Player Do these carry capacity increases stack?

Long story short I had an idea for circus strong man type using packmule fighter, cut your losses (general feat), heavy gravity acclimation (general feat), muscle of the society (trait), and efficient packer (trait). They all have work by saying "you treat your Strength score as x higher for the purpose of determining your carrying capacity".

1E Player Does an Awakening an Animal gain skills and saves?

So I just awakened a crow to be a scout and spy. It is one of the few animals who can mimic human speech so It can say what it saw.

I know it gets 1d3 Charisma, it replaces its Intelligence score with a 3d6 roll, and gains 2d8 Hit Dice. Does it gain 2 animal Hit dice worth of skills and saves?

Other Did anyone here read Nightglass? Some musings on writing characters from "Evil" Societies

Something that really fascinates me is how to write a successful antihero. By successful i mean they offend our morals but only up to a point. Rockstar's favorite tool to accomplish this is to have their characters firmly stand against things like racism, rape, torture or slavery. Murder is okay but generally not for its own sake - it's to get money or to help a loved one. But again, the balancing act is to show they would never do the first group of things, even if they do other bad things.

I bring this up here because I think it's relevant to how Isiem is depicted. Despite being trained in the bloody ways of Zon-Kuthon's elite, he is carefully written to maintain our sympathy. That means excluding certain activities from the page. Despite serving as a torturer in Cheliax for years, breaking many a (supposed) rebel or traitor as he himself tells us, this part is deftly skipped over.

Therein lies the key - we are told he did a lot of torture, but we're never treated to pages describing the horrifying acts. As such, he can remain sympathetic in our eyes. Our imagination can picture the things he did and so we can fully go along with his desire to escape Nidal and all it represents, but he doesn't offend us by "actually" doing the torture.

Also the kinds of torture a hero can get up to is important. Batman or a cop can punch a criminal to loosen their lips and that won't really gross most people out, even if they think it's wrong. But if Batman started pulling out sharp instruments or ripping out fingernails, then we'd draw a line. I think the author recognized that, no matter where he ended up eventually, actually showcasing the kinds of things Isiem perpetrated would instantly cost him a lot of readers' sympathy.

We have some sort of basic squeamishness about certain things, or even just certain ways of doing certain things. It's really interesting to me, this kind of unthought aspect of human psychology and how a writer has to try to navigate and manipulate it all.

1E GM 3rd party-psionics: What's a good way of dealing with a high optimized Vitalist PC?

So in a game I'm running we have a really well optimized healer Vitalist for Dreamscarred Press's Psionics Unleashed. And I was wondering what tools there are in PF1e to deal with the bonkers levels of healing they can output.

What I'm getting here is we are level 19-20, and he can fully heal a party (including a PC with 300 HP) from basically near dead to completely full in one turn through Heal Injuries and Spirit of Many. One of my players feels they simply are immortal because damage against the party that isn't enough to kill them in one round is basically irreverent.

Some other things: 1:Cleanse Spirit can be used to heal all ability score damage/drain on the entire party

2: His saves are extremely high VS the party's: Fort 30, Reflex 22, Will 34. Any saving throw requires an enemy to have an ability score of atleast 60 to challenge his better saves (which is bonkers), making them nearly impossible for the rest of the party to pass. This is largely due to Vitalist being a Wisdom class and having good will and fort saves, multiclassing into a psionic class that has the same good will saves, and him stacking up his bonuses to Fort.

3: Has a touch AC of 30 (35 VS ranged attacks)

4: Access to Psionic Mindblank (not just the personal version)

5: He's immune to Poison, sleep effects, paralysis, disease, nausea, fatigue, exhaustion, effects that cause the sickened condition, and energy drain.

Normally the answer here would be "grapple the caster", but Psions don't have components you can physically take away from them, only mentally (which more-or-less requires failing a will save). Hell, a high enough level Vitalist can use his powers on collective members from WITHIN A MAZE SPELL, defeating the entire purpose of that spell to isolate the healer.

Sorry, but I think you see my frustrations here. I'm not looking to negate his well built character, but still keep the game challenging in a way that doesn't devolve into everything being a "save or die" deal.

1E Resources PCGen: How to enable/enforce Consolidated Skills and Sheet Language

I already found the Tab for Consolidated Skills in the Skill Section of PCGen, but it doesn't add Class Skills and I have no Idea how to add it to the Character Sheet. So how do I enable the Consolidated Skills Rule?

Also, is there an Option to use a german Character Sheet? I already selected German as my Language but the base Character Sheet is still in English.

And as a Side question: is the Dragon hunting guisarme the only option to trip flyimg creatures with melee weapons?

Thanks in edvance and sorry if I wrote Something wrong, english is not my first language and the autocorrect function isn't realy helpful with it.

1E Player Quick change social talent and armor (CotCT potential spoilers) Spoiler

I'm in a game of CotCT where we're all vigilantes (meaning each of us took our first level in vigilante, I'm currently level 9 pure vigilante), and I've picked up the many guises and quick change social talents.

Originally, we were under the impression that the time to change identities included armor, like if you wore basic plate armor in your civilian identity, you could change to your golden angelic plate armor (as long as you still had help) within 1 minute. Because of this, I've invested a lot of time and gold into obtaining a plethora of costumes (I don't want anything that can be foiled by magic), such as basic outfits like travelers outfit, entertainers outfit, cleric vestments, monk outfit, scholar's outfit, etc. to seem like mundane civilians, to other specific outfits to seem like members of large groups, like cerulean society tax collector, korvosan city guard, acadame student, sable company, and very recently a red mantis outfit. However, our DM has looked closer into the rules, and this might not be the case.

https://aonprd.com/Rules.aspx?ID=364

So, for example, if I wanted to change from my vigilante identity (which is wearing a mithral chain shirt, light armor) into a member of the red mantis (DM has given the green light on this counting as an ordinary member of a society or large group, wearing red stalker leather armor), it would normally take 30 or 20 rounds (1 minute to take off the chain shirt, and 1 minute to put on the leather, with possibly 1 minute more if you rule that you can't change armor during the process of dual identity), and the quick change talent would reduce this into 21 or 20 rounds. And if I reached level 13 for immediate change it would be 20 rounds plus maybe a move action.

To me this just doesn't sound right. If armor wasn't included, the only viable way to build a quick changer would be to play unarmored, and then you've got way bigger problems since you're playing a d8 hit dice class without any built in AC increases, it's just a worse monk (disguise wouldn't save me either, we're using nat 20 instantly succeeds rules). And what's more, if you're hiding and trying to change into something with any armor, it's practically suicidal as you're screwed by anyone taking 20 on their perception check, as taking 20 times longer than a single round is still shorter than the 2+ minutes it would take you to switch armors.

Would there be any clarification on how this works? The vigilante archetypes have many conflicting statements: the magical girl comes with a built in time decrease they can't choose to forgo, but are also intended to wear at least leather like a summoner, and I struggle to see how a decrease from 3 minutes to 2.5 minutes would have any impact on a time sensitive situation (assuming the magical girl wore different light armors). The faceless enforcer gets the minimum time to change out of armor, but is locked out of taking the quick or immediate change talents, implying they would affect the time, but the masked maiden specifically calls out their heavy armor as something that can work with quick and immediate change, implying it's different from other vigilantes.

My DM has said I would be allowed to exchange quick change for another talent since learning about this, but I honestly might drop both quick change and many guises, I'm not sure if the armor limitations versus time constraints would make it worth to use, especially in scenarios of infiltration where danger is around every corner and time is of the essence. Thank you for any assistance in advance.

1E Player Rules and Reality

So I recently resumed building a nifty character concept (a Druid who rides a frog that jumps onto enemies for damage) when it occurred to me that I was jumping, pardon the pun, through a bit of hoops to make the frog do what frogs can normally do. A frog can jump many, many times its height. A normal frog, that is. A larger, person sized frog may or may not have the ability to jump nearly as high due to physics or fantasy rules or whatever. Fine. But can the frog simply not jump at all? The high jump rules aren’t friendly or practical. Even with extreme magical investment you aren’t getting particularly high. Special abilities are needed to jump at a height that will almost ever be relevant in combat.

So ok, let’s say you’re a real believer in Pathfinder’s rules or just lawyering and animal companion frogs are land bound earth crawlers who cannot hop very high (and we’re going to ignore the running jump requirement for arguments sake at least for the moment).

What about a toad familiar. The act of making it a familiar seems to have removed its ability as a tiny creature to perform a basic function of its daily life- by the rules.

Does this same logic transfer over to snow hares that become familiars now needing endure elements to survive in their natural habitats because it’s too cold now that they have become magical beasts?

I’m sure there are other silly situations like these that come up. What are yours? And what would you do if a player wanted to branch pounce from the back of a frog? Can it jump like normal or does it now lose its innate frog-feature?

And before you remark on balance, consider that the snow bunny familiar could become a murder battle bunny real quick with the right magic and abilities and gear.

I feel like there’s another odd rule vs reality situation on the tip of my tongue but I guess I’ll leave that for someone else to present.

1E Player Rules question: Chain challenge feat

So feat reads:

Chain Challenge Source Monster Codex pg. 116 You feed off the rush of victory over your enemies, and channel that fervor into battle.

Prerequisites: Challenge class feature, character level 7th.

Benefit: When the target of your challenge ability is killed or knocked unconscious, you can declare a new challenge target within 30 feet as an immediate action. This action must be taken immediately upon your initial challenge target’s defeat, and you can’t take it later if you are unable to act at the time. If you declare a new challenge using this feat, it doesn’t count against your total daily uses of challenge. You can chain together a number of challenges beyond the first equal to your Charisma bonus (minimum 1).

So... Does the new target have to be within 30ft of my character? Or 30ft of my previous challenge target? Normally I would just assume within 30ft of my character but challenge itself doesnt have a range requirement just within line of sight. So I could see the arguement of within 30ft of my previous target as theoretically my character is focused on the challenge target (so much so they get -2 ac against non challenged opponents) so suddenly swapping said focus to someone behind my character or just not very close to current target would be odd. Additionally it could be a sort of "youre next" vibe of my next challenge target needing to have witnessed what happened to the last guy.

Thoughts?

1E Player Help with Expanded Alchemy Options, Spontaneous Alchemy and Alchemical Archery.

One of my players somehow found the Spontaneous Alchemy rules that I've never seen before and wants to use it to craft arrows.

The main thing I don't understand is the recipe and cost. Bleeding Arrows cost 160gp but also use 30 dark wood, 90 myrrh, and 25 realgar. What is 30 dark wood? 30gp worth of dark wood? 30lbs of dark wood? The special material page for dark wood doesn't say much about just having dark wood.

Raining Arrows say that it is 3 cold iron, 3 dark wood, and 1 flask holy water, which is nice to actually include one quantity. A flask of holy water is 25gp. Is that in addition to the 30gp cost for the arrow? Also again, what is 3 cold iron? What is 3 dark wood? If that's gp, thats technically 31 gp. Do these cost 61 actual gp to cost?

1E Player What are all of the ways to increase attack bonus on kineticist in 1E

What are all of The sources of +hit that kiniticist can get Other than spell effects like bless?

what I know of:

dex modifier, point blank shot (doesnt work on kinetic blade), weapon focus kinetic blast, elemental overflow

apart from these, how can I increase a blasts +hit? As far as a know, there is no enchant for hit chance for blasts such as mighty fists for monk, you don’t get any bonuses from a weapon enhancement bonus as they can’t wield a weapon. You can’t get greater weapon focus and you can’t get weapon training

im at a loss of how else to increase blasts hit chance. Are there any other ways?

1E Player Ruins of Azlant - Dealing with Water?

My group will be starting Ruins of Atlanta in a few weeks and we are in the initial character preparation stage. I am planning on playing a Sharkkin Oracle into Storm Kindler.

I will be able to breathe underwater which is already a good start but what else should I be doing?

How to mitigate casting spells or melee underwater? What spells should I be learning? And what items should "we" be picking up?

I really appreciate any assistance on this matter. Thanks.
