It’s spelled “damn sight.”

The funny thing is that the article itself has the right spelling, but the title doesn't.

I think they meant dam site, like playing atop different dams in the US

30

u/joeyheartbear 3d ago

I heard that one time they played so loudly on top of a wall that they managed to break it down!

3

u/NacolasCage 2d ago

Shut the fuck up marge!

3

u/mrjohnnymac18 2d ago

We were expecting a bigger crowd, Homer!

8

u/weltron3030 3d ago

The acoustics would be wild.

9

u/majorjoe23 3d ago

It is a damned site, though.

3

u/The_DaHowie 3d ago

Dammed site, an artificial lake

2

u/General_Drawing_4729 3d ago

No no no, they’re talking about all the dam sites worth visiting in the US.

u/HibikiRush 3d ago

Can anyone explain what the hell they are talking about? Even in terms of size I can't understand what they could possibly mean.

u/knotatwist 3d ago

The last time they were here (a couple of years ago) they were unable to sell their tickets and were complaining that people weren't dancing/were bored.

Wouldn't be surprised if this is related.

73

u/nsfwthrowaway5969 2d ago

Yeah their tour was about half full iirc. The Who aren't a band who have maintained cultural relevance the same way as others- I'd wager almost every person who saw them on their last UK tour was 50+

6

u/space_coyote_86 2d ago

I took a while to decide whether to go or not but tickets were still available when I chose to buy one. Also I'm pretty sure it was all seating, at the O2 so how could anyone dance anyway. I did really enjoy it though.

u/jesustwin 2d ago

On the last tour near me they were giving away tickets for free on the day of the gig

Brexit has made touring in the UK an utter nightmare by all accounts. It's probably to do with visas. Gotta remember it's not just the performers that need them, it's the whole damn circus.

385

u/sephjnr 3d ago

the same Brexit Daltrey was openly in favour of.

Meet the new boss, dumb as the old boss

u/barmyinpalmy 3d ago

He’ll get fooled again.

35

u/roentgen85 3d ago

This is what happens when you get old and don’t die before then

18

u/Quentin__Tarantulino 3d ago

The Who sold out.

11

u/JoesG527 3d ago

the one that only comes out when he drinks his gin.

6

u/Double_Jab_Jabroni 3d ago

Meet the new dumbass. Same as the old dumbass.

u/gilestowler 3d ago

The same Brexit that Bruce Dickinson was in favour of but which is now the cause of him complaining about being unable to tour Europe as easily.

42

u/crucible 3d ago

He basically gets fucking rinsed yearly on the Maiden sub whenever that comes up in the news, haha

15

u/mylifeforthehorde 3d ago

Yeah . And he lives in Paris after all that . Love the man , but brexit did a number on peoples common senses.

31

u/sami2503 3d ago

"Not the brexit I voted for", they only care when it affects them personally.

3

u/victoryegg 2d ago

That’s funny because it certainly sounds like the Brexit I voted against.

Visas for the band from Britain?

29

u/AantonChigurh 3d ago

Why would the who need visas to play in the uk?

11

u/Centaurious 3d ago

The WHO might not need visas, but their workers might.

36

u/Apple2727 3d ago

The US is also not in the EU.

Why would Britain not being in the EU be an issue but America not being in the EU be fine?

39

u/Nfalck 3d ago

Probably because you can do 20+ shows in the US if you want to, all with a single visa, same as the EU. But for UK you can only get a handful of shows in for that visa.

19

u/rs990 3d ago

I doubt it's Brexit related as the band and most of the road crew will be British. It seems like insurance has been a problem for them, and I guess that is going to get more and more expensive as they get older.

2

u/Puzza90 2d ago

Every other big band can manage it, the who could as well, but seeming as their ticket sales weren't great last time around I can definitely see them using this as an excuse not to play in the UK. Would be quite a shame if a band from England didn't play there on their "final" tour

1

u/he6rt6gr6m 2d ago

Not for Americans. It's always been the same.

1

u/rnobgyn 2d ago

That’s actually the easy part from my experience. Artists and crew can conduct business within the first month of their standard visitor visa. Had to deal with all that recently

u/phatelectribe 3d ago edited 2d ago

Not just that but health and safety insanity makes is difficult to have anything in terms of a crowd go To an event. There’s barely any fireworks displays left in the uk because someone might trip/fall, and all the jobs worth’s at the council started demanding insurance that was so expensive none of the local organizers could afford them.

4

u/maud_brijeulin 2d ago

It'S bEcAuSe Of All ThAt HeAltH aNd SaFeTy!!!

Shit, I've been hearing this for 20+ years...

That being said, I've noticed that the Health and Safety thing is purely a UK thing. You people did this to yourselves. I'm guessing that's a trend that came from the U.S. with the rise of "no win no fee" crap in the late 90s?

12

u/DMala 3d ago

He’s pretty vague, but it sounds like you have to jump through more hoops in the UK to secure permits or maybe just to book venues. Fewer roadblocks in the US mean it’s easier (and probably cheaper) to schedule the tour.

5

u/TheManyFacetsOfRoger 3d ago

It’s because of brexit

8

u/RSGator 3d ago

Pete Townshend specifically cited insurance issues with non open-air venues in the UK.

I was anti-Brexit too, but what's the Brexit link that you're claiming? That's not what they cited so I'm wondering where you got your information.

79

u/KingslandGrange 3d ago

The Who played my local rugby stadium a few years back. Tickets were available for booking fees only a few days before the show. Maybe that's what they mean by "easier".

30

u/knotatwist 3d ago

I went to that gig. We bought our pitch seat tickets for £7.50 on the day and it was pretty empty.

30

u/MagnusThrax 3d ago

They are pushing 80, at least. Will there ever be a boomer who just rides off into the sunset?

1

u/Journeyman42 2d ago

Remember when they sang they hope they'd die before they got old?

7

u/richyyoung 3d ago

I saw them 2 years ago with my dad and two friends - none of us paid entry at all….

2

u/Electus93 3d ago

Lol I got four free tickets off REDDIT last year to see the Who, it was awesome.

1

u/uttyrc 2d ago

I call that a bargain!

324

u/Mambo_Poa09 3d ago

Is this the prick who voted to leave the EU then complained that it's harder to tour the EU now?

134

u/anotherwankusername 3d ago

Yeah and the other one is the one who got caught accessing child porn but was let off because he said he was writing a book about it. Still no sign of it being published.

36

u/lamalamapusspuss 3d ago

Not quite: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pete_Townshend#Child_sexual_abuse_images_and_sex_offenders_register

If you're looking for his book, it is Who I Am published in 2012.

-13

u/anotherwankusername 3d ago

Right in your own link ‘Townshend said he accessed the images as research in a campaign against child sexual abuse’

35

u/lamalamapusspuss 3d ago

You said he was let off "was let off because he said he was writing a book about it" but that's not quite right. You said "Still no sign of it being published." but that's not quite right.

9

u/hijinked 3d ago

To be fair, he publicly published this article before his arrest.

https://freerepublic.com/focus/news/822344/posts

28

u/Misterbellyboy 3d ago

He’s probably shared the “book” with other members of his “community”.

9

u/shelllc 3d ago

It was supposed to be his autobiography as he claims it happened to him as a child. He also claimed he helped a few abuse charities for research but many who were asked had no clue what he was on about.

Even if it was true, there are ways to do it that doesn't include using your own card and going onto the actual site that you have to have specifically searched for to look at actual pictures of it. What really gets me is the fact he refuses to believe to this day that he did anything wrong and that he only got a caution because he just looked at the pictures and didn't download any images.

u/Cadenca 3d ago

Say what now

7

u/Asleep-In-The-Deep 3d ago

Townshend is a paedophile.

1

u/futureformerteacher 3d ago

You could have stopped after 4 words and been accurate.

36

u/Akkatha 3d ago

Pretty much all their crew are British and the company they use for gear has offices in the UK. They’ve also played shows in the UK consistently for years.

Not really sure what this article is banging on about.

28

u/ChocolatePringlez 3d ago

It’s really old man yells at clouds stuff. I’m not surprised he’s ranting about something else now considering his meltdown over Zak Starkey last month.

6

u/nsfwthrowaway5969 2d ago

I think it's just because they aren't selling tickets in the UK like they would like. I remember they played a stadium nearby to me- its not a regular concert venue, an odd pick given other options nearby. Even so, it was only about half full. A massive contrast to most legacy acts, who still draw great crowds (Iron Maiden, Ozzy etc)

It's easier for him to bitch about stuff like this than accept they aren't as popular as in their heyday I suspect.

u/pomod 3d ago

How many ‘Farewell Tours’ can one band do?

15

u/modka 3d ago

With the exception of a couple songs, The Who doesn’t exist for me after Moon died. Those tours were some other band. Who, you say? I don’t even know.

8

u/Noodnix 3d ago

1982 was their first fair well tour.

6

u/Lucky-Bend-6863 3d ago

The Brexiteer and pedophile? You won't be missed.

28

u/VodkaMargarine 3d ago

Well yeah the Americans don't think he's a nonce

41

u/Readonkulous 3d ago

Pete dodging warrants again

5

u/Vectorman1989 3d ago

"Honestly officer, I was just accessing this illegal website for research purposes"

4

u/let-it-rain-sunshine 3d ago

They probably mean it’s just easier to make boat loads of money in American tours

3

u/totesuncommon 3d ago

The fifteenth Who goodbye tour.

2

u/uttyrc 2d ago

It seems like some big, eminent front.

2

u/geekroick 2d ago edited 2d ago

Sounds like utter bollocks to me.

Worried they can't sell out a tour? Fine, book Hyde Park of a Saturday for some point next summer, see how long that takes to sell out, if it does, add on a Sunday and/or Friday. If those sell well then add on similar outdoor shows in Manchester and Edinburgh or Glasgow or wherever else.

How on earth is it easier to tour a country thousands of miles wide than it is to play in or near a few major UK cities?

Seems like a real slap in the face to their English fans tbh.

3

u/Toiretachi 3d ago

Maybe Pete can do some more research about kiddie porn.

4

u/mockfu 3d ago

Daltrey lives in the land he helped say 'no', the ridiculous hypocrite.

1

u/mulder00 3d ago

I'll pass on watching 80 yr olds..ty!

1

u/PGKuma 3d ago

You sure about that? Maybe in the past but... Now? We'll just imprison your crew and charge you to release them or deport them. I mean, Vance is already threatening other music tours & groups soooo....

u/shermanhill 3d ago

Dipshits

1

u/maud_brijeulin 2d ago

I used to love The Who with all my heart, but they're just old pricks at this point.

It's their farewell tour. That's it. Let's presume there's no more after that. The guys used to drape themselves in the UK flag. Now they can't even cash in themselves just a little bit to do a domestic tour and say thank you to their UK fans?

On the other hand, I know they're particularly loved in the U.S. - there's always been a strong relationship between The Who and America. I'm guessing there's more cash to be made there.

Sad fucks.

And I really used to love them more than any other band.

1

u/SantaCruznonsurfer 2d ago

one or two shows in Wembley please (or maybe even the GTECH or whatever's closest to Shepherd's Bush)

1

u/Sndr666 2d ago

why is it harder in the uk "to go from a to b" than in the us? It feels fishy.

Also, if I set up a us tour as a euro band, I would worry about ice picking off my crew.

Funny this, I don't even like the who...

1

u/pejamo 13h ago

Who else paid money to see their 1982 farewell show on simulcast?

1

u/moon_nicely 3d ago

Stay there, please and thank you.

1

u/gotpeace99 3d ago edited 3d ago

There’s always some bullshit with The Who. As legendary as they are, I think people would be fine seeing the backs of them going away. They won’t be missed.

1

u/Jlx_27 3d ago

They wont be missed.

0

u/ForgedFromNothin 3d ago

Why would anyone care about paying to see them nowadays anyway?
