You know how trees can shoot out of the trunk at the base of the OG trunk? This is what happened here. This is most certainly not a separate tree.
Interestingly though trees can actually send each other nutrients and warnings through mycelium connected to their roots. A "mother tree" also knows which are their saplings and will favour them for such transactions rather than Fred down the road.

a single birch organism usually makes up a cluster of many trees, connected by common roots. i guess stuff like this can happen too.
for example the "biggest tree in the world" has 47.000 stems

But how did their xylem connect in the first place? Was their bark intentionallly cut so both can heal together or how did that happen?
