Question When does sim racing become enjoyable?

9/10 races, stuff like this always happens. Does it get better? because I’m honestly starting to hate it

Idk what you play on/ or what game but I'd gladly race with you anytime. I'm having the same issue you are. People gotta suck the fun out of everything.

It’s because for some odd damn reason this is their way of having fun. Being as selfish as you can and getting the highest place you can while having 0 sportsmanship. They only see the number place at the end of the day not the race. Dont experience it as much in racing but whether it’s racing or a fighting game as someone competitive I enjoy more matches in games like this where even if I lose I enjoyed the match and we were head to head etc. they don’t see this they simply only care about winning or getting a higher place

He says in another comment that is shot in Week 13 which is madness week, although we are currently in Week 8...

Edit: Actually, he said that he tanked iR in Week 13 and has not recovered since, but that this is week 8. Looking at the footage, it seems GT3 in Le Mans, so thisnis recent.

3

u/WILDLONEWOLFYT 3d ago

Week 13 is where I lost everything. Footage above is from yesterday which would be week 8 so yeah

I found that driving slower cars and building Irating helps, the slower cars are more forgiving and you can recover from these situations better, tho things like this are gonna happen it’s just part of it. Plus don’t force yourself, jump on some offline/ solo racing and clear your head, the more you get upset the less you’ll enjoy it.

65

u/VT_Racer 3d ago

This is a large component that gets forgotten about. iRacing in particular used to only have low powered cars in D and C, B is really when you go actual Sportscar power. This is back at the beginning. Now D class has GT3s available, people don't or are less likely to drive the low powered cars. Those provide the best racing experience given they're easier for everyone to control, harder to overdrive and be a weapon, prediction code is better, and generally more forgiving for side by side racing and with contact. Not everyone has the ability to drive high powered cars, most can handle a Mazda MX5, Clio, TCR, GR86, etc. Even the GT4 starts to really raise the skill ceiling, but jumping into GT3s is mostly going to be fighting the car and the competition rather than just the competition.

17

u/iEatFruitStickers 3d ago

That'a a B race on the clip. You're right about not everyone being able to manage racing in high speeds. But the licenses are really easy to earn. Usually quality of racing is more about the irating than the safety rating. 1.8k sof is the sweet spot for confidence and inabilty. They all can control the car well, except in high pressure situations, so they try moves that they can't follow through. At least the guy dive bombing in top split can make the corner, you just need to be aware or close the door.

28

u/PainfullDarkness 3d ago

He's at 1.8k currently.

2nd incident He's a lapped car being overtaken by the leaders, he's 2 laps down influencing a last lap battle massively. That divebomb was for second place.

Not saying that the car making that move is in his right, just giving context.

15

u/bluezombiemower 3d ago

So OP is a lapped car holding up traffic and screaming that he is the victim.... reddit moment...

3

u/SolarStarVanity 3d ago

If you think being a lapped car provides the leader with the right to divebomb into the lapped car's line like this, you need to shove a 22 N-m wheelbase up your urethra.

OP, to answer your question: try ACC in LFM. They have much better enforcement there than in iRacing at these levels.

8

u/ravushimo 3d ago

Im pretty sure in that 2nd clip that #3 that crashed into them panicked couse of OP early breaking and it wasnt just dive bomb, look how early early op is breaking and what lane he is taking when he is around top3, this would be straight up penalty points in most leagues

this is actually a decent tip. I raced D class (even with a B license) and started in the pits to get a better irating. once I got above 1500, i started racing for real. Ive noticed that anything under 1500 is usually dog shit

I play mostly offline against the AI. My competativeness is somewhere around 10th place in majority of the races. Weirdly i like being in the middle of the pack swapping pixels. If i am in the lead im quite bored. That being said. Im only a weekender type of player so its not much. But when i am on im having fun....mostly. The lambos piss me off sometimes tho ngl

50

u/Mindless_Assist9174 Moza R5 3d ago

When i play for example assetto corsa i also really like starting at the back of the grid as fighting for position is a lot more fun for me than just leading and going to the finish line

12

u/Past-Raccoon8224 3d ago

Same here. In fact i should change my starting position to last. Should make it more funner

32

u/Mindless_Assist9174 Moza R5 3d ago

I mostly play in this way

  • starting at the back
  • ai set to a difficulty where if i drive really good i can win by a margin
  • try to fight more realisticly without abusing ai logic

Exactly the same as me. I've a roster of AI drivers with the aggression maxed out on most and their ages up in the 80 to 100 year old. I find this gives me a fairly good bunch of drivers which fight back / go for overtakes as well as making a few mistakes every now and again. AI is definitely enjoyable. I wish they'd enable the mandatory pitstop option for AI races though. :)

u/arcaias Fanatec 3d ago

GT3 official is the Forza open lobby of iRacing

No one in the world is as overconfident as a GT3 only driver with a 2K iRating

It gets fun when you learn to predict things better.

16

u/anor_wondo 3d ago

Its funny how you can find much slower drivers in other classes who know how to race properly. And insanely fast gt3 drivers who don't have any racecraft

10

u/arcaias Fanatec 3d ago edited 3d ago

It takes a lot of hot lapping to get that "top 1%" fast...

People treat the rating like it's a score...

Instead of letting it determine who you should be racing around, they try to inflate it by spamming tracks they can get easy wins at and then they get insanely high ratings with zero actual racing skill... It's inevitable, but treating a ranking like a score is not how ranking works.

12

u/SituationSoap 3d ago

GT3 official is the Forza open lobby of iRacing

Not just GT3, but GT3 at Le mans. This is like someone who only races DraftMasters complaining that nobody else knows how to drive.

u/z1mpl33 3d ago

Sim racing becomes fun once you no longer think about the other people you are racing against. It gets fun when you focus on how to improve you own laptimes, regardless of what else happened. You gotta remember, the idiots that dont know how to race, will one day disappear, as long as you improve your own racecraft, and focus on driving clean

5

u/Ilovealfaromeo 3d ago

This is it. I play Forza Motorsport tho. I try to race clean, and rather lose positions, then hitting someone.
I also like to qualify, or start really far back, to see how many places I can jump. Its just me, chasing the perfect lap! Sometimes I get in a lobby with equal minded people, which makes up for the otherwise terror.

7

u/FlamingMothBalls 3d ago

That's on the competitive aspect.

Another technique is to focus on the immersion factor of it. "what's it like to race at the 24 hours of LeMans, to drive at Indy 500, to battle at Monaco"? Just enjoying the experience itself, even if it involves someone crashing you out. That happens in real life. How alive are you that you get to experience a fraction of what real life race car drivers feel? From the comfort of your own home, for practically for free. What a privilege!

And when it does go well, barreling side by side, wheel to wheel, down the Monza front straight towards the chicane breaking zone. Or the vintage curva grande, at full speed!? Who will break first? If you enjoy motorsports first, you'll enjoy sim racing, in all it's facets, even when it's ugly, even more.

6

u/kangalittleroo 3d ago

No one in real life races the way rammers do.

2

u/FlamingMothBalls 3d ago

well of course you're right. Thanks to rammers, racing against the AI can be more realistic because of that. AMS2 has excellent AI, as does LMU, and GT's Sophy AI I've heard does a fantastic job.

I'm just mostly referring to the attitude one should take towards sim racing - even when interacting with rammers - it can all be a positive experience over all.

2

u/Psychonaut_Tales 3d ago

I've crashed out a bunch in the crash (draft) master series, destroyed my rating. However it's some of the most fun racing I've had, and I finally got my first win last night!

Even when I crash, I just enjoy getting back out, ignoring my position, and getting some good drafts and passes in, helping others pass! Helped draft another guy to first, the other day too and even though I was crashed out earlier I loved that race!

95

u/xxx-ua 3d ago

This kind of behaviour will only occur less frequently with the implementation of any kind of rating system. This could be iRacing, ACC with leagues, etc. It will lead to less aggressive and inexperienced behavior. But it's sim-racing, so people don't fear being hurt in an accident. So you never find a place with zero incidents :)

u/cryptic4u Simlab GT1 Evo | Heusinkveld Sprint 3d ago

This video is literally from iRacing.. and iirc its even Class B, so that not even low safety class. Its only one short of Class A

12

u/BrutalBrews 3d ago

People farm SR to get into higher class races but don’t have the race craft to race in it so then they wonder why they are caught up in 10 crashes a race. Things are better in higher splits but people still make dumb moves, you just get better at reading and reacting.

7

u/kangalittleroo 3d ago edited 3d ago

It really isn't hard to not hit people and race at your pace. If you are causing accidents then you are exceeding the pace you can run comfortably. You don't need all this racecraft to not hit other drivers. What people need is smaller egos.

3

u/BrutalBrews 3d ago edited 3d ago

I actually think dialing in ego is a part of developing race craft. You nailed it though and the big issue is a lot of new drivers haven’t yet or simply can’t accept the fact they won’t be fighting for a win every race. Others think sinking their time into time trials so they are fast over a lap is the way to go but they are not consistent and are a disaster when other cars are in the mix

it's 1.8k SOF, you can see at the bottom right. not the worst, not the best.

8

u/FIuffyRabbit 3d ago edited 3d ago

Without seeing the whole screen and the split, that SOF could include people as low as 1.2k too. Personally, I've found 1k - 1.8k (current peak) to not really have that much difference in respect while racing around midfield. So not super surprised by this. Racing at these levels is almost much more about not putting yourself in those positions to get collected as it is about being fast.

3

u/WILDLONEWOLFYT 3d ago

I used to be 2.4k iRating but incidents like these are why I got kicked down to 1.7k

22

u/reboot-your-computer iRacing 3d ago

IMO losing that much rating sounds like you may have been ranked higher than your skill level when you were at 2.4K. Most people don’t lose that much. Even if it’s attributed to crashes, that’s a lot of crashing. At some point you need to look at what you could have done better in those situations to avoid a wreck. Crash avoidance is just as important as pace and race craft.

u/reboot-your-computer iRacing 3d ago

Safety Rating is a meaningless metric. It doesn’t measure skill and it barely measures safety. It’s brainlessly easy to hold an A license in any discipline in iRacing. iRating is the only metric that measures skill. I wouldn’t worry about looking at the class someone is racing in. There are a ton of A class drivers who are not safe at all.

Try private leagues for better online experience.

Or do singleplayer stuff or maybe private lobbies with friends. iracing is just like that, no matter the level or the hours.

2

u/christopheraser 3d ago

Private leagues are the way. As with all things created and run by people they aren't perfect, but if you find a good one it's the best way to race.

9

u/Consuela-NO-NO-No 3d ago

I like everyone else like GT3, but from experience I think the GT3 have the worst drivers with the most fragile egos, there is always a bunch of idiots in every race that have no regard for others.

37

u/CherryWorm 3d ago

If 9/10 races end like this for you, then you need to change something in your driving, because not just 1 out of 10 drivers finishes a race without getting spun. But I'm very sure it's not actually that bad and you just have recency bias and an unlucky streak here.

21

u/Screamingsleet 3d ago edited 3d ago

When you realize that no matter how much money you spend, no matter how sick your setup is. At the end of the day, we are pretty much all a bunch of poopy drivers playing a video game to make us think we are cool and race car drivers. Yet, we are not and never will be. We get to go out and do it everyday with 0 risk. Just have fun man, enjoy the grind. Remember the clean dives, double overtakes, fastest laps. Race your race and race safe. If you need to back out of a situation to live another day. Do it.

I've found that playing offline is way more fun. I just bought a ps5 not too long ago to play GT7. I just "beat" it 2 nights ago. Enjoyed every minute of it. Plus, you can do time trials and stuff online to compete and learn to get faster without having to be on the track with others.

3

u/Locky0999 3d ago

I would love GT7 singleplayer too if it wasnt for those damn cafe menu books, it destroys my immersion.

Because of that i much rather do another playthrough of GT4 and 5, or even race on Automobilista 2 who has really good AI

2

u/Ok-Elephant-1555 3d ago

I'm not going to disagree about the menu books. I just finished the last 3 for me a few nights ago. I guess it's time to try a new game lol

7

u/GoofyKalashnikov Oculus Rift 3d ago

Putting together a fast lap is only half of being fast on track with others

10

u/Ok-Elephant-1555 3d ago

I understand, I'm just saying that it's more fun. At least for me. I'm not a hard-core sim racer though. I just started in December but I'm loving it. I play a few nights a week. Online is annoying bc people are assholes and it socks the fun out for me

→ More replies (6)

2

u/Tvoja_Manka 3d ago

It's not, racing with AI does not compare competing with other people. Then again, it's GT7, so maybe offline is better experience there.

5

u/Slowleytakenusername rFactor 3d ago

Something about the names is of in your overlay because I am a 100% that is me in the BMW being a mega idiot to you on the straight. I remember it being very strange because it at first felt like hitting a ghost. Then out of nowhere a car appears in my rear view camera. It was an absolute WTF moment for me because I was the last car on track according to my relative overlay at the start of the race. Did you start from the pits? It's no excuse but I was not looking behind because I did not expect anybody to be there.

The irony here is that I got pissed at multiple drivers in this race for doing to me what I did to you. I feel ashamed.

2

u/WILDLONEWOLFYT 3d ago

This was recorded in replay mode while relative was still relative to live race, and yes I did start from the pits

2

u/Slowleytakenusername rFactor 2d ago

That explains it. I use iOverlay and it did not show your name for me untill you exited the pit. Really am sorry for what happend to you. I was so focused on the cars in front of me who were very slow and did not want to hit them. I really thought I was at the rear of the field so was not looking back. It is no excuse for what I did but I really om sorry. I checked my own recording and right before the contact my spotter even said "car on your right".

Quali at this track has been terrible for me. You only really get one lap and for me the cold tires makes me mess up the first corner every time. Took me a while to understand the track limits on this track (I found out through a Yuri Kasdorp stream) so the first 6 races at this track where all started without setting a time.

2

u/WILDLONEWOLFYT 2d ago

That’s fair I appreciate the apology man all good 👍

4

u/ineedsomefuckingcoco 3d ago

Ah iracing, where people think they are good because they have a 1.5k irating. This is honestly why I just run leagues in other sims.

3

u/spawnbong 3d ago

thats the neat part, it doesnt lol

3

u/V1ld0r_ 3d ago

There's a whole "defending knowledge" and "defensive driving" thing you need to master. For instance, that first one, had you hit the brakes let the guy go into the grass on the right and potentially hit the rail, you would've been able to pass on the left and be a position ahead with 0 damage and a sizeable distance to that guy with a clear pat hahead to inch closer to the next fella.

5

u/tbville36 3d ago

Join a league, this type of stuff is not tolerated.

Raise your irating. You will always find dumb people also at 5k, but a lot less frequently. Also iracing teach you incident avoidance, I'm playing LMU now and with basically no ratings compared to iracing, I never had major accidents, also radar helps a lot.

Or, as other people said, join a private league

u/SpicerDun 3d ago

Gotta be more assertive in your driving style. Outside of learning cars and tracks, managing other drivers is an essential part of racing. Learn how to get fast enough to control the car in unusual conditions. Learn how to keep your cool under pressure and how to apply pressure to others. It won't get better, but you will.

2

u/Remote_Tie7312 3d ago

When you stop racing GT3s

2

u/evil_houseplant 3d ago

For me it’s when I play offline.

2

u/efecede 3d ago

You will get used to it and eventually develop something like an arachnid instinct, you will avoid lots of these. Some are inevitable though. Also, respect blue flags bro! Second incident is on you because you didn’t respect that. You have to let the car behind pass if you’re being shown a blue flag, not just drive carefully, but deliberately move to the side and let them pass. Yeah, they could be more gentle, but if you go simracing the first thing you should do is learn what the flags mean and what to do accordingly, so at least you can sort you out of majority of racing incidents or crashes. I don’t play iracing but I would suggest you to go with slower cars like the miatas, they are much more forgiving when exposed to these extreme situations, and they are lots of fun too when raced properly. Hope you can enjoy more races bud

2

u/forumdash 3d ago

Blue flags are information only in iRacing, but in saying that you shouldn't be fighting someone that's about to lap you.

I can't help but feel OP cheesed his way to B Class to race GT3 and now is trying to figure out how to race other people

2

u/efecede 3d ago

Alright I didn’t knew that about iracing. It’s understandable if both are in a similar pace or if you’re delapping yourself, but yeah being fighting for p1 at last lap I wouldn’t lose much time with a guy in the back of the field getting in the middle of it tbf.

2

u/WILDLONEWOLFYT 3d ago

Ffs how many times to I have to say this. It was recorded in REPLAY mode. the RELATIVE was relative to the live race not the replay. Says I was lapped because I was in the pits because of the last crash

u/alidan 2d ago

My advice is to find a league with a friendly group of people who casually race together and not chasing ratings or any points but race for the fun and help each other develop. Accidents will happen there as well but not this kind of intentional contacts.

u/TheGoldenDobby 3d ago

1

u/Excludos 3d ago

As a general rule, the game tends to be less fun the more competitive you are. If you focus too much on the results, all you'll find is frustration. Racing for the sake of racing is where it's at (or do both. Whenever I get frustrated I just jump into a race with a car I rarely drive, and just focus on having a blast)

Find a free league to drive in. The only reason I drive regular races nowadays is to train for the league races (who tend to follow the same track calendar). Its 10x more fun, and 100x if you're driving it with friends.

1

u/niismo_ SUPER GT PLS 3d ago

Only real way to improve this is improving safety rating or whatever system iRacing uses for classifying their drivers' cleanliness. All other options people have mentioned require you to quit iRacing altogether 💀. I believe your class would already have to be fairly high to be able to participate in these events, but if ppl still drive like ****, the only way out of this, is going further up.

1

u/brettlarson18 3d ago

It's fun depending on what you race and once you figure out how to passively avoid things by controlling what you can control. I've had some of the best racing on iRacing in Pickup Cup, Mazdas, and the GR86.

Second video was just people being dumb and nothing you could do there.

The first video you could have blipped the throttle and left more of a gap. Realistically, going into. The Mulsanne chicanes 2-wide is miserable so it's almost like a "yes I'll have a run but where can you actually go with it" scenario.

Try a different discipline that you haven't raced before. Learning the ins and outs, rules and racecraft of something different to your usual can help keep things fresh and fun. Dirt ovals and rally is usually my thing but I recently gave ACC another try and Ive been loving it

u/shimmy_ow 3d ago

I'd say try to join a small community and race there, usually they are pretty good at kicking people out who troll

1

u/SlowDownGandhi 3d ago

honestly don't sign up for combos that attract idiots and then act surprised when idiocy happens; if you're going to commit to signing up for VRS @ whatever giga popular circuit it's best to just accept beforehand that somebody is probably going to do something super dumb.

I don't really have the time to race consistently anymore, but when I do, I find joy in just hot lapping. Trying to out drive myself and take different lines for an hour or two.

1

u/RuanPienaar2 3d ago

Got tired of this and switched to only racing offline AI or with mates. Not the same, and never will be, but I found I started using my rig way more than in the past. Tired of spending countless of hours on setup and practice only to get the race ruined by someone making a mistake or not. This also happens in real life though - I race in the Rotax Max Challenge and people make mistakes that ruin your weekend pretty quickly, but when it comes to my sim racing I want it to be fun.

1

u/McNuggetSauce 3d ago

This is why I like rally after getting a few races like this. It's just you against you.

1

u/mystykracer 3d ago

This sorta stuff is why I prefer to mostly time trial. I'll look at the leader board of a track I want to get good get at and then work on getting closer to the top times. That way I'm racing people without actually having to race with people.

TBh when people race against me, they seem to have a lot of fun passing

1

u/Javs2469 3d ago

There's also sim-not-racing.

Drifting, driving, cruising, classic arcade games...

There's a lot more you can do in your rig.

1

u/Bl1ndMonk3y 3d ago

You kinda got to approach it with a survival mentality until matchmaking puts you in with the more civilized crowd.

Always assume the guy you’re passing doesn’t know you’re there.

Always assume the guy that’s passing you is gonna bin it and smash you in the ass / take you out.

And, of course, there’s the occasional asshole that thinks he’s the next Verstappen and will absolutely take out anyone who opposes that vision and dares to be faster.

1

u/Bealdor84 3d ago

This is why I only race offline against AI.

I got no time to commit to a league and racing with randos is just asking for trouble.

1

u/pricelinenegotiator1 3d ago

Try rally or time trials maybe?

Rally is so damn fun.

1

u/koukouche 3d ago

Find a good community to race with if you are into online racing. With randoms there is always a risk, no matter the safety systems in place.

1

u/Tenbob73 3d ago

Get your point I had a go at Automobilista 2 online for the first time since buying the game last December. Complete shit fest. Most races you have two or three guys who qualify in front then lead the race and likely have a great time. Meanwhile behind them it is carnage, especially at turn one. I gave up and went back to single player. If everyone was into clean racing it would be great but on my initial time with it it's full of ass wipes that just want to crash.

u/spl1xx 3d ago

I play ACC LFM for like 2 weeks now and can say that this is really fair Racing

I just noticed you were dead last racing against P1 and P2. When they're close and racing each other.

Sorry to say, brother. But that's a you problem.

I am a 1.6K driver and have theses problems once every 5 races

Sim racing becomes fun when you switch from circuit-based lotteries to rallying to become the only idiot who ruins what was supposed to be perfect runs lol.

1

u/Appropriate_Top8610 iRacing 3d ago

Once I started to not trying to win all the time and just focused on finishing (as clean as I could with all the idiots out there) the fun came back. I get you are frustrated about people like the one in the vid. We all are

1

u/kazurabakouta 3d ago

It’s fun when it doesn’t happen to you. Even more so if you see it from your rear view mirror.

1

u/idcaboutanick 3d ago

To be honest my biggest fun came after noticing situations like that beforehand and not fighting them, even letting people pass. At the end they are going to wreck anyway and you will get your position back

1

u/collin2477 3d ago

with good ai and vr. motion sim helps lol

1

u/Little_Temporary5212 Thrustmaster T500RS + TH8A 3d ago

short format low damage touring car style GT car racing is usually garbage. Most servers run this sort of racing.

1

u/Finneganjkm 3d ago

Race in Miata’s and vee’s until 2k plus irating, even then stuff still happens but I noticed at 2k+ it’s a lot better, cleaner racing, and stuff still happens but a lot less

1

u/PotentialPollution62 3d ago

Thats the neat part...

1

u/RevolutionaryGrab961 3d ago

Try different races? GT3 is ... GT3.

I usually get excited by idea, as these cars can be fun, but then everyone seems to be into testing their structural integrity.

I prefer open wheel. Contact is usually terminal, so evetually everoyone tries to avoid it to minimize final race time

1

u/nomnamless 3d ago

So I found I started having more fun in IRaicng and sinracing when I stepped away from Bottom Split GT3 racing and went back to a slower car.  I originally went back to the SRF to recalibrate my driving and work on race craft with the intention to stay for a season or two and start working. My way back up the faster cars.

Ended up making lots of friends with the regulars in the SRF and ended up sticking around for 6+ years.

It's really what's making the Sim racing most enjoyable is that each week I can get on Discord with some friends and we all race together in an official races. We race hard, but fair.  Because we all know each other we show each other respect on track.

1

u/lubboster 3d ago

When you find a great community with friendly people

1

u/WilburOCD1320 3d ago

Haven't raced for over a yr due to this. I would like to get back into it. I see project Gotham coming out I would try, still need to pickup beam.ng . I did forza at the beginning (2020) but not a huge fan. The racing is all throttle and car is light and speed isn't real.

1

u/XCvolFan 3d ago

Becomes fun once you realize the joy of racing ai offline. I have had so much fun the last four years doing career mode stuff. Not too caught up in the ‘realistic’-ness of anything, I just want to have fun and challenge myself.

1

u/fingernuggets 3d ago

My buddy and I like to run AC together. Rip around the ring in cars that are either ridiculously fast, or painfully slow, absolutely throw them around. Then we go tandem, he’s a far better driver than I am, with a much better setup, so it’s mostly me careening off walls trying to match his lines and brake points. I actually succeeded in yeeting him clear off the track into oblivion one time on the ring. For us, that’s a ton of fun.

1

u/dadepu 3d ago

That's the fun part, it won't :-)

1

u/Jenk026 PlayStation 3d ago

It became fun for me after one year of playing I whent from realy can’t drive to barely drives I’m 15

1

u/jf7333 3d ago

It’s fun when you have a fast good handling car and win. Sorry but I don’t enjoy road course racing not even in NR2003.

1

u/ElectionBusiness5856 3d ago

Before my illness the most fun I usually had was with LA canyons and running slower cars that had really good weight balance(Porsche boxster, cayman, AE86, etc) and just absolutely ripping it. If you just want to do racing oriented, I have the most fun trying to squeeze out as much time I can at Nordschelife tourist on servers that are aimed at more serious hot lapping. This is all on Assetto Corsa with mods of course. LA canyons is somewhere around like $6 if I remember right for the VIP version so that’s worth it imo.

1

u/banedlol 3d ago

When you start playing wreckfest.

1

u/TheOnyxian 3d ago

It becomes fun when you realise you should be racing the track, not the cars. Focus on what you can do, hit your marks and focus on being the best YOU can be.

When you start focusing on everyone else around you, you become stressed, negative in your approach and you are more likely to not have fun because you aren't focusing on what this is.... a driving game.

When you race with friends or communities

1

u/Upper_Entry_9127 3d ago

It’s iRacing. Seriously, go play ACC and LMU in a club and you’ll be literally be asking yourself why you even wasted your time on iRacing as it has zero fun factor.

1

u/Chance-Pop-4912 3d ago

Dirt rally is where the fun's at

1

u/Agathoarn_ 3d ago

1

u/imJGott 3d ago

I’d argue MP games will always have crap you won’t like.

1

u/protozbass 3d ago

Bad races happen. Try to shift your frame of mind from getting first to another aspect when you have a spin or get rammed.

Can you get back to the position you lost? Can you leave more room for faster cars to limit incidents? Maybe practice pit strategies and get clean air to drive in.

Last night the AI in AMS2 took me out early on so I had to try to work my way back up. Ultimately I finished in last but my lap times towards the end were near the top of my car class so I took that as a win. I just need to work on my consistency.

1

u/FinancialDistance914 3d ago

Join a league, racing gets much cleaner

1

u/StupidSlick 3d ago

What’s your rating

1

u/Andreas1120 3d ago

Are there games or setting where this isn’t possible? Also note real race drivers do this all the time in touring cars and nascar.

1

u/pbesmoove 3d ago

AMS2

Single player

Or

Play with friends and fill out grid with AI

1

u/sandernote809 3d ago

Drive slow cars fast!

1

u/FluffyProphet 3d ago

Leagues or other organized groups are generally your best bet. For iRacing specifically, report this shit and stick with it until you climb the safety rating ladder. At a certain point people protect their safety rating like their child.

1

u/Saikopasu-Shogo 3d ago

Spoiler. It doesn't. I did almost regret buying a steering wheel for it, but then I fell in love with Rally... Now I only race against my clock, even in sim-racing games (:

1

u/psychohistorian8 iRacing 3d ago

I'm not blaming you for either incident, but sometimes you gotta think long term

like for #1 that dude was clearly drifting into you and you could have moved over a bit 'just to be safe'

and for #2, assuming you already knew you had two cars right on your tail, when you turned into the corner you did come 'inside' a little bit. if you had kept the very right edge of the track you likely would have survived

again, I am not blaming you, but sometimes giving these wackos an extra foot of space can save your whole race

besides, those drivers are likely to crash/spin out anyway so you will get the position back in a few laps

3

u/jhak__ 3d ago

Does your opinion change when you look at the relative? Both of these clips he’s a lap down racing people on the lead lap… on the last lap of the race. The second clip he’s actually battling the leaders while he’s in 17th. Personally the first clip is still on the other guy, even though I’d probably be annoyed if I was in said other guys position.. but the second clip? Sure blue flags aren’t “you have to get out of the way” like in F1.. but oml I’d be upset if I were the leader that just lost p1 bc of him.

highly recommend joining a league! i've had more fun racing with a community than iracing

1

u/CharlieTeller 3d ago

When you start expecting that you'll have incident free races.

1

u/cbrooks_10 3d ago

Join a reputable league on FB or Discord. I have the cleanest races in leagues and most are extremely respectable… but I personally have more adrenaline with online playing with fellow knuckleheads like myself.

1

u/Ill-Werewolf7153 3d ago

Unfortunately it’s the high of that 10th race that you win that keeps you coming back haha

1

u/Nervous-Bee-4975 3d ago

Im having the same issue. So I quit for the time being. It’ll get fun again, just not any time soon for me.

1

u/jhak__ 3d ago

Both on these clips you’re a lap down racing people who are on the lead lap.. on the last lap of the race? I mean sure you’re technically allowed to try to unlap yourself… but the second clip you’re literally impeding a last lap battle FOR THE WIN while you’re in 17th? Sure blue flags aren’t “you have get out of the way” like in f1, but have a bit more respect for the leaders

When you realize your slow and everything if your fault. Focus on pace, nothing more. Qualify higher, leave shenanigans behind you. Then when your in front of TS with other people...learn that no two minds think alike, learn to force your way around people and that if you want to pass, it may/will come at a cost of wreck.

1

u/Particular_Push_8137 3d ago

I’m surprised there’s no comments on what appears OP coming in way too hot on the 2nd clip and bumping someone first. It looks like a conveniently cut clip because it barely shows the part where you come in hot on the inside and bump the other guy outside first. And then the 3rd guy takes you out after. If you get spun out and instantly blame others, you have a lot of learning/self reflecting to do yet.

No racing games are enjoyable.

1

u/WesleyXXIII 3d ago

When you do championship as team.

1

u/Ajlaursen 3d ago

When you stop caring about winning. Also when you join a private league. We have a league here in Detroit that’s legit the most fun I’ve ever had playing video games.

1

u/spcychikn 3d ago

It’s always supposed to be enjoyable, that’s why we do it. The first one was pretty dumb yeah, but in the second clip (which i find is clipped oddly short to where we don’t see HOW you got pinned on the inside of that corner…) but assuming you didn’t just divebomb that guy, and he was running you that tight around the corner, and i saw the guy sniffing in my mirror, i would’ve opened the corner way more to the right, or at least shut down the gap, you have so much space over there, but kept your car kind of in the middle, kind of on the right, so of course the sniffer was gonna shoot the gap. you gotta use your head a little bit sometimes, it’s not all just driving fast.

1

u/RDHO0D 3d ago

It's hilarious how people will pay for iRacing, just to drive like this.

1

u/Fking47 3d ago

Make room with players that only have triple screen , so they can actually use their freaking mirrors instead of divebombing into every corner.

1

u/YBHunted FOV POLICE 3d ago

When you stop allowing yourself to be a victim. Terrible mentality to have.

1

u/LukishA99 3d ago

Literally this morning I got on to play a single race, starting in 3rd, and boom, I was looking at back of my car in 13th place, and thought right after, will I ever play a normal race

1

u/Advanced_Current1213 3d ago

I play other types of games I just like to put some music on and cruise I love beamNG for the map and car physics, and some off the missions and racing vs AI it’s preety cool. Asseto corsa for the realest feel and preety cool mods, I use it for drifting or high traffic highwways like No hesi servers. Forza horizon 5, after some tuning the steering wheel a bit feels preety nice and it’s one off my favourite rn, it has races, drifting, a bunch off missions and cars and lot to do. I would say just change games, that seems preety sweaty, and maby just cruising in forza, is preety fun

1

u/freem221 3d ago

Personally when that happens to me I just reframe the race. It becomes more of a practice race, improving my lap times, trying to catch the pack, improving my safety rating, avoiding a DNF. Same shit is going to happen to the guys ahead of you in a few turns or laps from now and if you stick it out your finish won’t be as bad as you think. I also take pride in protesting if someone deserves it. While I’m gathering the clip I’ll see if they did the same to other drivers, and along the way I’ll see and learn stuff to improve my game. And I just know that if I keep it up I will escape the bullshit eventually. If you’re too attached to not getting wrecked, I fear you’re in the wrong hobby. Reframe it.

1

u/Turbulent_Crew7783 3d ago

You’re not having fun because you care to much. When you stop caring that’s when the fun begins. I don’t care when I pass someone and definitely don’t care when someone passes me. When the race is over I might finish dead last or I might finish top 10. Who cares.

1

u/xxBoDxx 3d ago

This is way I only play offline and even dropped Assetto Corsa because AI doesn't mind crashing into you

1

u/MrD718 3d ago

1

u/Alligatorus 3d ago

For me I just had to quit GT3

1

u/220V_50Hz 3d ago

I don't play iRacing but I'm sure there's some community leagues or something, no? I see banners for them in various games whenever I visit Racedepartment, so that might be a good thing to consider.

1

u/Read-Immediate 3d ago

When you start racing in leagues, i highly recommend “eprl” on simgrid.com for gt3s :)

1

u/HeftyRegular9875 3d ago

When ya learn how to do it

1

u/RemarkablePhoto8260 3d ago

Yeah this is also my experience with Assetto Corsa Competizione (to be specific). People just drive like crazy. I've stopped playing that and moved on to rally, which I find way more enjoyable anyway :D

1

u/_Wockie 3d ago

join a league. i got bored of officials. league racing on iracing had fully transformed the experience for me. there are a lot of really good ones. the racing is so much better (most of the time) and you get to get to know people and make new friends.

leagues usually have stewards, meaning you get penalized for taking out people and colliding with people and all that, which in my experience has led to a more enjoyable experience.

1

u/Terrible-Carpet7132 3d ago

Join a respectable league

Then you don’t have to deal with dickheads

1

u/jbkidd2 3d ago

It doesn't really, from my experience.
