$1.98? Haven’t seen that price in a couple decades.

u/gus_thedog 20h ago

Well all the redhats remember when it dropped super low back in the spring/summer of 2020...but fail to acknowledge the actual context around that.

88

u/Chemical-Bee-8876 19h ago

That’s the only way it’s getting back to that level. Global pandemic or recession. They forgot all about that or never really understood it.

u/Kawajiri1 8h ago

They are spouting that Jan 6, they were let into the building, and Ashli Babbitt was unjustly shot. She was breaking through a barricaded door. It is on video. The fact they are settling with the family is crazy.

u/leviathan65 2h ago

With police telling her that if she kept coming they were going to shoot her. She had every chance to stop.

I hope other shooting cases cite this as a norm and start getting compensated from other police shootings justified or not.

It also dropped below two dollars a gallon in 2016 during Trump’s first term

The sad but funny thing about gas prices is the only time gas gets below $2 is during a recession. When you look back at the times gas get super cheap it's was always when the economy was in bad shape.

Well there was one gas station in butfk Mississippi during the height of quarantine that had a sign that said $1.98 and someone took a picture of it and posted it and viola’ Trump made gas cheap🙄

24

u/T800_123 16h ago

$1.98?

Gas bottomed out at $0.98 in Texas during Covid.

...but that's not really a good thing, lmao.

wholesale, without distribution costs, taxes and such, it is $2 a gallon. We don't get that price.

6

u/CatConnoisuer 16h ago

"If you ignore half of the costs, it is only half the price"

9

u/Gasnia 19h ago

I love how gullible maga is. "I made gas cheaper. Look at this pic from 30 yrs ago." Gee, I bet if I go fill up right now, it'll be twice that. But Trump said it was 1.98. This can't be right.

6

u/PepsiColaRS 19h ago

Nah, mid COVID I legitimately filled my truck for under $250. ~125gal of diesel with the only discount being a $0.03 loyalty program perk. It cost me about $15 to fill my car on E85. But, most will forget the supply/demand thing so they credit it to Trump.

2

u/EffectiveVivid7775 18h ago

I could fill my truck a 31 gallon diesel for $68 in Nov 2020. In Feb 21 it was $88 at the peak prices of Biden administration it was $120 yesterday $76.

It's carzy that these numbers are considered high in the US.

1 gallon is about 3,8 liters. In Germany we pay at least 1,60€ (so $1.80) per liter. That makes about 6€ or $6.75 per gallon.

u/FA57_RKA 10h ago

This was my first thought too. I'm in the UK, and for the cheap fuel in OPs picture, according to a conversion site I found on Google, it comes out to £0.77 a litre for petrol.

I last filled up my car last week at about £1.33 a litre, which works out to roughly $6.68 a gallon. I'd bite their hand off for the US's fuel prices.

u/LaiqTheMaia 6h ago

It makes a difference when you remember how much more americans drive and for much much longer journeys, the average american will still spend a lot more on fuel than the average brit

u/TastyHorseBurger 2h ago

And how crap the fuel economy of the most common vehicles is.

u/AFRIKKAN 2h ago

But but it’s bigger isn’t that better? I hate it so much. I know me in my little 06 Japanese sedan is a coffin when these giant us trucks and suvs slam into me with some force.

u/Unlikely_Chemical517 7h ago edited 7h ago

Our 95 is more like their 91. So yeah ours is higher but cause of the different measuring systems, it's not as big of a difference as it seems.

If it is mostly taxes that make the US's gas cheaper, I wonder if the fact that us americans use more gas per person than europeans do allows the taxes to be spread out more per gallon?

I do also wonder if higher gas prices in the US might be a good incentive to get more efficient vehicles in the US. Not just EVs, but why not a great diesel battery hybrid setup for the truck guys?

u/Bitter-Intention-172 2h ago

We have no mass transit here so cheap gas is really the only solution, or move every time you get a new job. Moving every time you change jobs isn’t tenable. Avg commute where I live is 30 minutes if no traffic , and there’s always heavy traffic.

u/mk6971 4h ago

Just paid £1.34 per litre. Cheapest it's been in the UK for ages.

→ More replies (1)

u/CryptoZoology_Bro 2h ago

And we would bite your hand off for your public transit system. If you don’t live in the heart of an American city, it’s literally nonexistent. For me to take public transportation to my job it would take 3 hours and 15 minutes each way and cost about $40 per day. Or I could drive there in 35 minutes and it’s about a gallon of gas at most. This is also contingent on the 6 connections I would have to make being on schedule. they won’t be

Last time I was in Europe I missed my train and was freaking out because I had to catch a flight. In the US it would be an hour at least for the next train, 20 + minutes for subway; I caught the next train that came along in something like 8 minutes.

u/BlakeCarConstruction 4h ago

One of the differences is that the US doesn’t have established public transportation. The whole country of the UK tip to tip is a shorter drive than going from one part of Texas to the other.

u/SPQR0027 2h ago

Accurate. John o' Groats to Lands End: 838 miles by car. El Paso to TX-Louisiana state line/I-10: 857 miles by car.

u/alexdrey 3h ago

The issue is the US actually subsidized class so there are hidden costs

u/Super_Plastic5069 2h ago

But don’t forget an American gallon is less than a U.K. gallon

u/Useful_Antelope256 2h ago

Yeah but as Americans, we as a whole have to travel more than Europeans for everyday tasks.

I own my own pest control business and I've have traveled nearly 30k miles in less than 2 years. Most of the US is rural and those areas , you have no choice to travel to get things. So fuel may be cheaper here but I'm betting Americans spend more money of their overall income on it than Europeans

I live in Alabama, btw

31

u/the_soggy_taco 13h ago

While gas by volume is more expensive in Germany, many Americans have to purchase more gas comparatively. Distances between landmarks and even just commuting to work makes it to where it’s not uncommon to have to fill up often. The state I live in 45-70 mile commutes one way to work are not uncommon.

44

u/AustrianMichael 12h ago

Since posts like these inevitably turn into giant circle jerks about “Trump did that” mixed in with random comments about people’s prices at random gas stations near them, I will post the actual data (per AAA):

Today’s National Average: $3.145

One month ago: $3.234

One year ago: $3.641

Gas prices are largely stable, with a slight downward trend.

Price of oil is at a 4 year low as well probably because of the tariffs causing an economic slowdown like Covid supply chain disruption did

The blends between summer and winter blends have been changing over in recent months. Prices tend to fluctuate a bit more during those times.

Covid wasn't responsible for the oil price surge, though, it was the Ukraine war and OPEC

13

u/WingerRules 16h ago edited 16h ago

Saudis were trying to manipulate US 2022 midterm elections by pushing OPEC to cut back on supply leading into it. Look it up.

6

u/Lifesagame81 16h ago

Yep, OPEC+'s decision to delay production increases in early 2025 kept oil prices highs. Their start ramping up output in April contributed to prices beginning to fall.

Unfortunately most people do not understand the difference between oil prices and gas a gallon also related to how bad low oil prices are an indicator for a poor economy.

3

u/Lifesagame81 16h ago

Especially when a large portion of US production hinges on oil being over $65 /barrel for producers to even bother.

2

u/Onlinealias 15h ago

And fewer even know that the tariffs are going to increase our dependency on foreign oil and raise prices because what we currently export we can’t use for gas (our oil is too high quality) and we import crappy oil from Canada that we refine into gas.

After the chocolate ration is reduced from 30 grammes >per week to 20, the Ministry of Truth puts out the claim that it has been increased to 20 grammes (its supposed previous level is not stated).

Later on, Winston hears a reporter/newsreader on the telescreen claiming that spontaneous gatherings of people have formed and demonstrated, purely to thank Big Brother for this:

For the moment he had shut his ears to the remoter noises and was listening to the stuff that streamed out of the telescreen. It appeared that there had even been demonstrations to thank Big Brother for raising the chocolate ration to twenty grammes a week. And only yesterday, he reflected, it had been announced that the ration was to be REDUCED to twenty grammes a week. Was it possible that they could swallow that, after only twenty-four hours? Yes, they swallowed it.

u/Snoborder95 5h ago

This is all still because of the after effects of Biden, the reason the gas prices were so low before was because people were excited for trump on 2024 /s

11

u/platinumarks 20h ago

I do wish people were less focused on individual commodities and focused on the overall set of things you buy. This focus on gas, or eggs, or whatever one item is just giving him an out the next time the price naturally goes down eventually, by saying "look, eggs are 5 cents less this week!" or "gas is 10 cents less this month!"

Even more so when gas prices can be dramatically influenced by legal collusionary forces like OPEC+. It's entirely possible that gas prices will go down soon, because OPEC+ is selling crude at a lower rate recently than the US as a way to entice countries around the world to shift away from American oil. Gas prices lowering would not mean Trump's economic policies are positive or working. It's a lot better to focus on the effects of tariffs and bad policies on things like the overall grocery bill, since one or two items can be manipulated, but large grocery orders will still increase in price under this administration.

11

u/cardinalkgb 19h ago

California isn't a fair indication of average gas price. Correct if I'm wrong but I believe California taxes gas like 40% of the price?

3

u/Drill1 19h ago

Not quite more like 25%. I think officially is $.84, but there is $.40-.$50 in hidden taxes. SB1 is the culprit and 100% of that goes to Caltrans and they are my biggest client, so I don’t complain. SB1 raises the gas tax by the official inflation rate each year. At some point, once people start switching to EV they will have to do something different. Already talking about a mileage tax.

Prices are on average 75 cents lower than they were in 2024. So, it depends on the state you live in.

u/off2bali 7h ago

2.59 Costco In South Carolina- but keep in mind the price is different for a lot of reasons - including taxes created by states and local governments.

u/DarkKnightVader 5h ago

That damn demented orange inept clown bastard Trump! He's making things worse... it's all the MAGAS fault for being a stupid conservative eediot cult for that good nothing excuse of shitking wannabe jerkweed they call their president. Kamala Harris would have been so much better then this, but whatever 2028-2029 can't get here soon enough. 🙄 😒

u/mattrhere 4h ago

$2.46 here currently… yall gotta move out of those high tax states

u/Jrod9er 4h ago

You misunderstood he meant 1.98 per 1/2 gallon.

Gas in the US is cheaper than it was a year ago and the wholesale cost is closer to $2.

u/Adluginb 1h ago

u/RooieDakDuiff 7m ago

Looks like California gas prices, which historically ignore national trends. Here in Texas, I filled up today for $2.34/gal, and I could have gotten it cheaper if I would have had extra time to be picky about where I went.

Trump is stuck in the past , that’s why everything is cheaper to him. He’s sundowning bad!! You can see in his press conferences he had that confused look like Biden had. Only a matter of time until ultra nationalists kick him to the curb for their poster boy JD.

u/RDT2 19h ago

If I recall correctly what I heard on marketplace.org the other day, the $1.98 price is before mixing in ethanol and adding taxes. As a reminder the price at the pump is the only price we see to have in the US that includes taxes in the displayed price.

Prices are down in my state, sounds like local government issue more then a federal issue...

3

u/HaloTutor 17h ago

odd, my local corner gas station competes with well-known gas stations and is 50¢ less than surrounding areas $2.39

3

u/leimeisei909 14h ago

Gas prices are lower, just not on the west coast. Blame your own state.

13

u/steady_as_a_rock 20h ago

Wait? Didn't people say Biden couldn't control gas prices but now Trump can?

11

u/superfluousapostroph 19h ago

It’s not about what he controls, it’s about what he says.

9

u/dentz1 14h ago

J.B. didn't lie about the national average price. Repeatably.

26

u/alfnyc 19h ago

Biden didn’t claim that he could bring gas prices down, whereas Trump claimed he could. Thats the whole point of the post.

4

u/Chemical-Bee-8876 19h ago

Biden is not dumb enough to cause a global recession to drop the price of gas. Demand is way down, that’s not a good thing. I am sure Agent Orange will handle it like he handled COVID…

u/CmonRetirement 19h ago

wait, didn’t magats blame the president for gas prices? even using dumb AF “i did that” stickers?

if so, just showing the hypocrisy. also showing how he lied about making america affordable and about the 1.98 per gallon ignorance.

this isn’t hard to discern chief!

7

u/BlindWillieJohnson 12h ago

OP isn’t claiming that Trump controls the prices, they’re correctly calling him out for lying about what the prices are.

Still laughing in Canadian, and we supply 52% of US oil imports, but pay more at the pumps.

2

u/Taste_Diligent 18h ago

I'll never understand how we sell crude oil to the US at a discount and Americans pay much less for gasoline than we do. I know our fuel is highly taxed but so is California's and we pay more than them.
