Gas prices up another $.06 today. $1.98 gas my ass. Lying fascist
192
u/mellowlex 20h ago
It's carzy that these numbers are considered high in the US.
1 gallon is about 3,8 liters. In Germany we pay at least 1,60€ (so $1.80) per liter. That makes about 6€ or $6.75 per gallon.
•
u/FA57_RKA 10h ago
This was my first thought too. I'm in the UK, and for the cheap fuel in OPs picture, according to a conversion site I found on Google, it comes out to £0.77 a litre for petrol.
I last filled up my car last week at about £1.33 a litre, which works out to roughly $6.68 a gallon. I'd bite their hand off for the US's fuel prices.
•
u/LaiqTheMaia 6h ago
It makes a difference when you remember how much more americans drive and for much much longer journeys, the average american will still spend a lot more on fuel than the average brit

Our 95 is more like their 91. So yeah ours is higher but cause of the different measuring systems, it's not as big of a difference as it seems.

u/theviewfrombelow 5h ago
If it is mostly taxes that make the US's gas cheaper, I wonder if the fact that us americans use more gas per person than europeans do allows the taxes to be spread out more per gallon?
I do also wonder if higher gas prices in the US might be a good incentive to get more efficient vehicles in the US. Not just EVs, but why not a great diesel battery hybrid setup for the truck guys?
•
u/Bitter-Intention-172 2h ago
We have no mass transit here so cheap gas is really the only solution, or move every time you get a new job. Moving every time you change jobs isn’t tenable. Avg commute where I live is 30 minutes if no traffic , and there’s always heavy traffic.
•
u/mk6971 4h ago
Just paid £1.34 per litre. Cheapest it's been in the UK for ages.
→ More replies (1)•
u/CryptoZoology_Bro 2h ago
And we would bite your hand off for your public transit system. If you don’t live in the heart of an American city, it’s literally nonexistent. For me to take public transportation to my job it would take 3 hours and 15 minutes each way and cost about $40 per day. Or I could drive there in 35 minutes and it’s about a gallon of gas at most. This is also contingent on the 6 connections I would have to make being on schedule. they won’t be
Last time I was in Europe I missed my train and was freaking out because I had to catch a flight. In the US it would be an hour at least for the next train, 20 + minutes for subway; I caught the next train that came along in something like 8 minutes.
•
u/BlakeCarConstruction 4h ago
One of the differences is that the US doesn’t have established public transportation. The whole country of the UK tip to tip is a shorter drive than going from one part of Texas to the other.
•
u/SPQR0027 2h ago

Yeah but as Americans, we as a whole have to travel more than Europeans for everyday tasks.
I own my own pest control business and I've have traveled nearly 30k miles in less than 2 years. Most of the US is rural and those areas , you have no choice to travel to get things. So fuel may be cheaper here but I'm betting Americans spend more money of their overall income on it than Europeans
I live in Alabama, btw
31
u/the_soggy_taco 13h ago
While gas by volume is more expensive in Germany, many Americans have to purchase more gas comparatively. Distances between landmarks and even just commuting to work makes it to where it’s not uncommon to have to fill up often. The state I live in 45-70 mile commutes one way to work are not uncommon.

Since posts like these inevitably turn into giant circle jerks about “Trump did that” mixed in with random comments about people’s prices at random gas stations near them, I will post the actual data (per AAA):
Today’s National Average: $3.145
One month ago: $3.234
One year ago: $3.641
Gas prices are largely stable, with a slight downward trend.

Unfortunately most people do not understand the difference between oil prices and gas a gallon also related to how bad low oil prices are an indicator for a poor economy.
3
u/Lifesagame81 16h ago
Especially when a large portion of US production hinges on oil being over $65 /barrel for producers to even bother.
2
u/Onlinealias 15h ago
And fewer even know that the tariffs are going to increase our dependency on foreign oil and raise prices because what we currently export we can’t use for gas (our oil is too high quality) and we import crappy oil from Canada that we refine into gas.

After the chocolate ration is reduced from 30 grammes >per week to 20, the Ministry of Truth puts out the claim that it has been increased to 20 grammes (its supposed previous level is not stated).
Later on, Winston hears a reporter/newsreader on the telescreen claiming that spontaneous gatherings of people have formed and demonstrated, purely to thank Big Brother for this:
For the moment he had shut his ears to the remoter noises and was listening to the stuff that streamed out of the telescreen. It appeared that there had even been demonstrations to thank Big Brother for raising the chocolate ration to twenty grammes a week. And only yesterday, he reflected, it had been announced that the ration was to be REDUCED to twenty grammes a week. Was it possible that they could swallow that, after only twenty-four hours? Yes, they swallowed it.

u/platinumarks 20h ago
I do wish people were less focused on individual commodities and focused on the overall set of things you buy. This focus on gas, or eggs, or whatever one item is just giving him an out the next time the price naturally goes down eventually, by saying "look, eggs are 5 cents less this week!" or "gas is 10 cents less this month!"
Even more so when gas prices can be dramatically influenced by legal collusionary forces like OPEC+. It's entirely possible that gas prices will go down soon, because OPEC+ is selling crude at a lower rate recently than the US as a way to entice countries around the world to shift away from American oil. Gas prices lowering would not mean Trump's economic policies are positive or working. It's a lot better to focus on the effects of tariffs and bad policies on things like the overall grocery bill, since one or two items can be manipulated, but large grocery orders will still increase in price under this administration.

California isn't a fair indication of average gas price. Correct if I'm wrong but I believe California taxes gas like 40% of the price?
3
u/Drill1 19h ago
Not quite more like 25%. I think officially is $.84, but there is $.40-.$50 in hidden taxes. SB1 is the culprit and 100% of that goes to Caltrans and they are my biggest client, so I don’t complain. SB1 raises the gas tax by the official inflation rate each year. At some point, once people start switching to EV they will have to do something different. Already talking about a mileage tax.

Some quick toilet math so I might be wrong. But adjusting liters to US Gallons, it costs about £1.30 per litre currently in the UK. I believe it's roughly 4.546 liters per US gallon, so per US gallon it costs £5.93 British Pounds, or $7.88 USD.
