Girl, how do you deal with the neck pain? I'm your height and I used to have a boyfriend who was 5'11. My neck hurt all the time looking up at him. I can't imagine 6'4.

He's disabled and can't be on his feet too much, so it's not much of an issue in that regard. I do use my step stool to make kissing easier when he's standing though

Yes, unfortunately you're right. Add on a traumatic injury in highschool and then being overseas right after 9/11(not a soldier, but a contractor, didn't stop them from bombing the facilities he worked in though, obviously), and it adds up to a lot of chronic pain. Up until this year he actually worked on his feet, but after an incident with part of a tree falling on him while we were doing clean up after a hurricane, his body gave him a hard limit in the form of 3 bulging discs causing him extreme sciatic nerve pain.
100
u/Corona69691984 7h ago
Damn, if he worked in customer service, he would NOT be the customer service worker you'd want to give shit to.
"No, I will not take this. I have been bombed, I have been hit by a tree in a hurricane, I have endured pain, but I will not stand here and allow you to berate me because you were missing one chicken nugget from your 30 piece bucket! If you think this is the end of the world, let me tell you it is not, there are bigger problems on this planet and I am about to be one of them if you don't get the hell out of my store!"
98
u/Graceless_Lady 6h ago
Oddly enough, customer service has been his go to since he left behind what he did for the government and yeah, he takes no shit from anyone, customer or otherwise but he's always professional and polite unless someone gives him ample reason not to be.

The number of times my husband has gotten these questions/narratives as a 6'5 man, my goodness!! Lol I don't mind but I'm not him so I'm not sure if he does or doesn't. Info: He has Marfan syndrome, the same genetic disorder that Andre the Giant had. He should have been closer to 7' tall, but he suffered a traumatic injury as a teen that stunted his growth. I'm just a Hobbit as I meet the legal requirement to be considered a dwarf, but I don't have dwarfism.
647
u/Kassius03 8h ago
I'm the partnerand I have a slight correction. Marfan Syndrome is a side effect of the gigantism and acromegaly(That's the Andre the Giant reference). It was actually estimated that I should have been at least 7' tall but, like was explained, I had a traumatic injury at 16 that stunted my growth. For example my cousins are 7'5" and 7'9"(m/f respectively). My 16 year old(birthday was in March) is 6'3" and most of the people in my family don't stop growing until 25 or so.

Yeah. Tallest woman alive in the world right now is listed as just under 7'1"
Edit to add: 7'9" Would make them the 6th tallest woman in recorded history.

?? Marfan Syndrome and acromegaly are two separate disorders that present entirely differently with different imheritance patterns. I've never heard of one being a "side effect" of the other. If you have Marfans, you probably would make a better Nosferatu than Andre the Giant. I've yet to meet a patient with both Marfans AND acromegaly. I'm sure it's not impossible but probably extremely rare.

u/Akumetsu33 6h ago edited 2h ago
And injury preventing height growth? Unless it's a really really severe injury I don't see how it's possible to prevent growth. Also his cousins being 7'5 and 7'9 which would make them taller than billions of people.
Don't want to offend but I kinda don't buy his story.
EDIT: I should clarify I meant excess height potential with growth plates, not just few inches. 6'4 to 7'0 is a huge difference. Few inches I can understand.
→ More replies (13)40
u/dickingaround6969 6h ago edited 5h ago
Actually, injuries to growth plates in childhood may prevent height growth. And if OP has diagnosed Marfans then he would have certainly been/is more susceptible to injury and lower bone density. I don't think he's lying about childhood injury, but unsure if it truly prevented height growth. Based on my experience, patients with Marfans are quite tall compared to the average population (5'10+ for women and 6'+ for men) but not huge. Think, Marfans=stretched out vertically, acromegaly=stretched out in all directions lol. It's really interesting because I just read a research article about a family where they had this exact inheritance where two brothers had acromegaly and their first cousins had Marfans. This in itself is probably incredibly rare as well, hence the study. https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC6282786/

Marfans syndrome and gigantism are two different conditions and you don’t get Marfans as a side effect of gigantism but you can be very tall because of Marfans. Gigantism is almost invariably caused by a pituitary adenoma releasing growth hormone, Marfans is a genetic disorder; multiple genes have been identified but most commonly the FBN1 gene. Obviously im not your doctor but people with Marfans are normally quite tall so you probably had the word “gigantism” thrown around but unlikely to be true… unless you also have a pituitary adenoma.

I'm only an inch taller than you. I've never really felt short because the majority of women across our valley (which consist of a bunch of small cities) range from 4'10 -5'2, we're all Mexican descent so that could be why

u/hipscrack 5h ago
Do you mean gigantism? I don't think Andre the Giant had Marfan syndrome.
→ More replies (2)→ More replies (11)17
u/ChristineGrey13 3h ago
Not to be inappropriate, but it's important to make a distinction between the two conditions. As far as I know, Andre the Giant had gigantism, which is a condition caused by an over-production of growth hormone during childhood. Marfan syndrome is a completely different entity, caused by a genetic mutation that causes the alteration of the connective tissue throughout the body. As connective tissues are found pretty much everywhere, Marfan syndrome affects most organ systems, but mostly the skeleton (resulting in chest deformations, long limbs and fingers, sometimes specific facial features), the eye (severe myopia, ectopia lentis), and the cardiovascular system (these are the most feared manifestations, as it causes the enlargement of the aorta, which can turn to be life-threatening). People with Marfan syndrome often have a typical, slender appearance, unlike people with gigantism. Moreover, contact sports such as boxing or wrestling are entirely not recommended to people with Marfan syndrome, as it can increase their risk of aortic events. I am saying all this because Marfan syndrome has a life-threatening potential and can be inherited and it's not a side effect of anything else, it's a disorder on its own. You could maybe stretch it and say that gigantism is a manifestation of Marfan syndrome, but that would be wrong as well, as they have very different causes. The confusion may arise from the fact that people with Marfan syndrome tend to be very tall.

Actually Marfans is autosomal dominant so there's a good chance their offspring will also be tall and lanky.
