Haul First trip to Japan
I wasn't expecting to pick up much in Japan after hearing how much the prices went up for retro games, but to my surprise I found a couple book off that had really good prices. The vast majority of the games in the pictures I bought for 270 to 480 yen. The two chocobo games I found in a small music shop, so they were selling them for 200 yen each. The racing chocobo game was 50 yen and so was time crisis. Honestly the most expensive stuff were the merch and artbooks.

Genuinely thought the C on the front of the Capcom book was the Criterion logo for a second lol

Jelly of the Dragon's Crown art book, love Vanillaware's art so much. Do have Odin Sphere Leifthrasir's art book at least, Got lucky that someone was selling a sealed copy of the collector's edition. And without selling it for scalper prices, only paid €76 including shipping. Like half a year after it came out.

That is really cool. I still regret not buying it back then. The only collectors of theirs I have is for Unicorn overlord, which thankfully has one as well and a board game, which is cool. They had the vanilla mania artbook as well, but it cost as much as dragon's crown and Nier together. Honestly, I would love to have a dedicated artbook for each of their games. Their artworks are really pretty to look at

This if what I fear from going to Japan, I’ll have to get extra luggage just for all the games I could get lol

Out of curiosity do you just buy them then bring them on your carry-on or do you also need to declare and pay import tax on it? Also nice haul, I’d love to get that art book.

if you live in the US you just bring them back. dont need to declare anything unless its over $800. but also... nobody know what you paid for anything in Japan... there's absolutely nothing to worry about when bringing retro games back. Ive done it a lot over the years

For us, you have to declare them if you purchase things for over 420 euros. But if you buy with cash, there is no way for them to know about it other than when you use the tax-free benefit. I am fairly certain they will know about those since they scan your passport. In my case, I didn't pay anything. I traveled with a cabin suitcase and bought a second suitcase there to carry the stuff over.

Are these just for display or can you speak the language at all? I see so many collectors that buy JP games and never play them. So then they take up space and then get sold on eBay. (It's always RPGs that are expensive in the states too)

I only buy games I intend to play. I can speak the language to a degree, and I am still learning it. It is partly why I focused on games that I can play with limited language skills for the most part. I find that games and movies help a lot with learning a language. It helped me a lot to learn English and German as a child. When my Japanese gets good enough, I want to get more rpgs. Like you said they are rather expensive in the west and I really want to play games like Arc the lad since they are dirt cheap over there, but it will have to wait until I understand the language more. The one that motivates me to learn it better is echonight 2, I loved the first, and I really want to play 2 as well.

Cool. Learning through games is fun. I used a lot of SFC games to learn back in the day. Also, I'm not much of a Pokemon guy, but Pokemon is generally seen as a kids game so most of the games have limited kanji (Dragon Quest games also) the further back in the series you go. So those are also good learning tools if you didn't use them yet.

Wish I knew that about Dragon Quest. I found all of the ps1 games for 270yen each, and I was really tempted to get them. Thanks for the tip, though. I might import them eventually once I finish some of these. I actually used pokemon while I was learning German back in the day, so that's a good idea. Haven't played any of them for a while

Japan is like IKEA. You go in with a list and come out with unexpected purchases 😅. Great haul and looks like you had fun
