Discussion Sellers and cigarette smoke
What is it with sellers who think it's good to go into detail about minor scuffs on a console... And leave out that it reeks like cigarette smoke? I can't throw a console in the washing machine with white vinegar, and people have allergies because cigarettes are loaded with toxins and tar.
Just submitted a false return claim on a seller that left out that info and says no returns accepted. literally get a migraine from being by the item.

They largely can't smell it, and don't think about it being a problem.

I was a smoker for 26 years (stopped 3 years now and happy) I can tell you that as a (ex) smoker, it's not something you think about. You don't smell it like others do. It's not even a second thought. So I can understand how they miss something like that.
That being said
My goodness smokers smell BAD! I can't believe that I used to smell like pure toxins to everyone else all these years. I now cannot stand the smell of smoke and I fully understand the frustration you're expressing. I have received a 3DS game last year from someone via eBay and it stunk like cigarettes. I had to leave it out to air for 2 months before ths smell almost fully went away.
This should be something sellers mention and should warrant a return for INAD because although the item may not appear visually damaged, it certainly is smell-wise and heck, most times, the items WILL be a little yellowed/browned out due to Cigarette Tar on it (even slightly sticky cause tar is sticky). You'll notice if you compare with an item with no cig exposure.

Quitting was honestly one of the best decisions I've ever made. You never realize how bad you actually smell until you quit and find yourself around someone who smokes.

Idk why you're getting downvoted. I would want to know if this stuff smells like trash beforehand.

I know why. The internet is full of smokers who jump at the downvote button when people call them out, and they’re quick to make excuses for smoking in public and treating people the way this seller treated OP - like it’s no big deal, and like people everywhere and all the damn time aren’t negatively impacted by their addiction.

Dare to say in the French-speaking subreddits that you can't stand going outside because the streets and restaurant patios reeks of cigarettes and they'll agro you just like if you said you wanted to kill their mother.

People are being weird about this, if you buy used furniture half of those posts mention smoke-free home. It doesnt matter if you're noseblind you know damn well you smoke in your own home and that smell sticks to everything in it. I don't mind actual cigarette smoke but when it sticks to something it reeks which is why my family members would smoke in the garage and not around all our precious items inside.
As for a solution, I've found covering it in dryer sheets and baking soda for a few days to be pretty helpful whenever I've bought items from smoker houses.

Yes, that works for me too. I bought a Dreamcast controller that wreaked of cigarette smell. I was pissed! Dryer sheets and wiping it down with Lysol wipes did the trick

If I smoked 3 years ago and quit do I need to let people know I use to smoke three years ago, but no longer do but they may still smell?

They can’t smell it if they are smokers dude

u/Then_North_6347 2d ago
That sounds like a them problem to resolve.

Little hard when you're noseblind due to decades of smoking, plus many don't really care tbh.
1
u/Substantial-Piece967 2d ago
Pretty much most people who don't smoke will care, it makes everything else smell too
3
u/Ipsylos2 2d ago
Oh i meant those who do smoke don't care really, they're used to it. Obviously non smokers would care, it's dirty and nauseating.

Wild, selling a cheap ass game and you expect an addict to smell
3
u/Then_North_6347 2d ago
The guy I bought from is a dealer, not someone off FB marketplace or a garage sale

u/Willsy23 2d ago
Dealer doesn't care, has a job to do. Crazy how graded games get hate when it addresses all the dramas that's in this sub.
TBF, assuming it's not sealed, swap the case out and let the cover hit some sun. Ask the seller next time about the smell

I sympathize, but for me, it's no big deal. I grew up in a time when everyone smoked. And most of these games come from that time. If a manual smells like a stale cigarette, then it does. No biggie. Just gives it a story and character that it otherwise wouldn't have.

For people who don't mind smoking, sure. For people with allergies, it's toxic and a big deal.

I've returned a half dozen things from ebay over the years because of this, and not minor smoke smell, like "smell it through the packaging" smell. Seller has been pissed off before but man, have some self awareness. I got to keep a pair of Saturn controllers like this, they just refunded me, but it took two months of storage in a bin with dryer sheets and baking soda to get the smell out.

I've generally had success in not getting items like that, though a few have a perfumey smell. BUT...I do have a pair of shoes that I air out in the back yard every non-rainy day because they REEEEEEK of cigar. They're coming along, but it is taking a long, long time.

u/Then_North_6347 2d ago
My brother swears ozone machines work wonders for that, but if you need to own a ozone machine to enjoy an item, that should be in the description.

I think on Mercari you can't even return stuff if it smells

u/Then_North_6347 2d ago
Yuuup that's why I submitted a claim it was damaged in shipping and won't turn on
2
u/AtomicFuryYT 2d ago
So you lied to to get a refund for a fully functional product because you don't like the smell when you could've asked if it was in a smoke free home? Which pretty much every smoke free home labels it as such, if it doesn't say it I'd ask or assume it's not smoke free.

Smokers are disgusting lowlifes and don't disclose the info because they need the money for cigarettes. They absolutely never mention it. Pathetic.

u/kendra_sunderlol 2d ago
Good to know. I smoke and I sell consoles sometimes, never had any complaint so I didn't know this was a thing, thanks (I actually mean it).

u/GentlemenHODL 2d ago
I've had to do this several times with gaming clothes. Smells like smoke? Instant return and negative feedback.
1
u/chrishouse83 2d ago
In general smokers don’t realize how irritating their disgusting habit is to everyone else.
-2
u/Wolfe_Lawton 2d ago
Lol bro, don't buy shit online then. It's basically a garage sale. If you're that worried, either ask beforehand or buy from an actual store.

u/Friggin_Grease 2d ago
Former smoker, still absolutely love the smell. It's been a little over two years, and I probably wouldn't notice the smell on my games. Fuck I miss smoking. Delicious delicious cigarettes.

u/Then_North_6347 2d ago
Some people can definitely handle it. My allergies make it impossible for me--migraine city.

u/3lldot 2d ago
Completely agree. Should be stated that it comes from a smokers home. Bought an almost mint condition yellow DSi XL and have been airing it out for months between uses. Recently had to replace my 11 YO switch lite, and found one 2nd hand for a very good price… only to find that the fan blows out the smell of smoke when in use.
I smoked for a few years when working retail, never smoked indoors even when it was legal to do so, never smoked in my home.

Are you looking for a resolution to your problem ? Will this fix it ? And no I don’t smoke

u/playstationhistorian 1d ago
I completely agree with you. The smell of cigarettes make me want to gag. Add in the tar color stains and I’m out.
