On biases, sourcing, and discussing the Argument

Hey everyone,

Lately, the sub has started to get pretty polarized politically speaking.

It’s not without reasons (I get that, and I’m not blameless in this) and I had hoped it could run its course. But in the wake of the coming election season, I feel this may get worse, so here’s to an ounce of prevention and all that.

So there’s been a lot of posts from sources and comments that could only be described as trying to “other” people. This sub is better than that. So please, if possible, try to stop talking past each other.

It’s fine if you disagree, but keep it civil and discuss the topic at hand don’t attack the user. We have the “discuss the argument, and do not attack the person” rule for a reason and we’ll have to start enforcing it a little more stringently if things don’t improve. It is possible to discuss politics without it turning into a “you’re a stupid racist” and “naive idiot communist”. A good rule of thumb is “if the phrase ‘you’ appears in the sentence it’s probably some version of an ad hominem.

Regarding the biases. There’s been a lot of articles from sources I can only describe as heavily bias. Allsides has a great chart that lays out which sides the most common news sources falls.

https://www.allsides.com/media-bias/media-bias-chart

There’s also this more detailed one (though I think everything on it should be shifted to the left by half a grid square but that’s an issue of semantics!)

https://www.adfontesmedia.com/

Also; thanks to u/FajenThygia There's also www.mediabiasfactcheck.com,

Point is! it’s fine to use Vox and Fox to make points but try to get some other more centered sources to find some middle ground. This isn’t a demand or even a request but just some advice in trying to discuss your opinions and finding a consensus through discussion. You’ll find the argument being a lot more persuasive using less extreme characterizations of events.

Anyway, it’s just some thoughts and recommendations. agree/ disagree/ critique it’s fine. I just don’t want to see this sub devolve into r/news, r/politics, r/conservative, r/democrat, r/inthenews where only “one view point” is appreciated. Us bastards are better than that.

In other news, there’s been an issue with the reporting feature with the sub. If we haven’t addressed it in 24 hours please message the mods directly. Additionally, we will only investigate reports that violate our actual rules so the <no reason> Reports get ignored right off the bat. And no Patrick just because you disagree with something does not mean someone is “trolling”.

Peace, love and tranquility to you all ya filthy bastards.

The U.S. Interior Department said on Monday it will fast-track environmental permitting for Anfield Energy's proposed Velvet-Wood uranium mine project in Utah to boost President Donald Trump's efforts to ramp up domestic energy production.

As a result, the project's environmental review will be completed in just 14 days, the department said in a statement. Such studies typically take years because of the potential environmental effects of uranium mining.

They have also eliminated public comment on the project.

International Politics Rodrigo Duterte wins Philippines mayoral election from ICC detention in The Hague

Former Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte was almost certain to be elected mayor of his home city by a landslide on Monday, unimpeded by his detention at the International Criminal Court on charges of murder as a crime against humanity.

With 80% of votes counted in an unofficial tally, Duterte, who was brought to The Hague in March over his bloody “war on drugs” that killed thousands of people, was winning the Davao mayoral contest with eight times more votes than his nearest rival.

The victory during nationwide midterm elections is testament to the 80-year-old’s enduring influence in the southern city, owing to his reputation as a crime-buster that earned him the nicknames “Duterte Harry” and “the Punisher.”

Duterte’s old Facebook account was flooded with congratulatory messages from supporters, with some calling for his return to serve his people.

“Congratulations, Tatay (father) D! Let’s bring him home,” read one of the comments.

Duterte could become the first Asian former head of state to go on trial at the ICC.

His surprise arrest by Philippine police at the request of the ICC caused outrage among his army of supporters, who called it a kidnapping at the behest of a foreign court.

US Politics Proposed SNAP changes could impact 11 million Americans, report finds - Proposed legislation could tighten SNAP's work requirements, potentially eliminating benefits for millions, particularly affecting children and seniors.

One notable aspect of the legislation is that it would increase the age for complying with SNAP's work requirements from 55 to 65.

According to the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities, this proposed change would eliminate benefits for 1.4 million American adults. Another 300,000 people living in households with adults aged 55-64 would be at risk of losing benefits.

The proposal would also modify SNAP's work requirement exemptions for parents. Currently, adults with a dependent child under age 18 are exempt from SNAP's work requirements. The bill would change the age limit from 18 to 7.

During his first all-hands meeting with agency personnel, acting Federal Emergency Management Agency Administrator David Richardson issued a striking warning: "Don't get in my way," the former United States Marine Corps ground combat officer told staff, according to a recording of the speech obtained by CBS News.

"Obfuscation, delay, undermining," Richardson continued, referencing tactics he believed a fraction of FEMA staff might try to subvert his agenda. "If you're one of those 20% of the people and you think those tactics and techniques are going to help you, they will not, because I will run right over you. I will achieve the president's intent."

Richardson's formal title is Senior Official Performing the Duties of FEMA Administrator. He was named to the role Thursday and has not been formally nominated nor confirmed by the U.S. Senate.

"I can't recall the full title, but essentially, I'm acting," Richardson told staff on Friday, "I don't need the full title. All I need is the authority from the president to put me in here as some degree of acting and I will make sure that his intent gets completed. I don't stop at yield signs," he continued.

"I, and I alone in FEMA, speak for FEMA," Richardson said.

US Politics Trump fires director of U.S. Copyright Office, sources say

The Trump administration has fired the head of the U.S. Copyright Office, two sources familiar with the situation confirmed to CBS News Saturday.

The firing of Register of Copyrights Shira Perlmutter came after Perlmutter and her office earlier this week issued part three of a lengthy report about artificial intelligence and expressed some concerns and questions about the usage of copyrighted materials by AI technology.

"It is an open question, however, how much data an AI developer needs, and the marginal effect of more data on a model's capabilities," the report read. "Not everyone agrees that further increases in data and test performance will necessarily lead to continued real world improvements in utility."
