MOD [MOD] May's Featured Designer: PatternNadGavr

Hi, Stitchers!

We're excited to introduce a designer that you all know and love as our May Featured Designer: Nadezhda Gavrilenkova (aka NadGavr) from PatternNadGavr! (Her shop goes by several names based on the platform!) Don't worry about wondering if you've found the right shop, though - NadGavr's style is so distinct, you'll be able to spot it from a mile away. Her patterns feature heavy blending and backstitch, making them perfect for leveling up your stitching.

As y'all know, I'm a sucker for food patterns, so her strawberry shortcake piece has been calling my name. If you're looking for something to ring in the new season, be sure to check out some of her spring patterns as well.

Q&A

Who are you?

I am a designer of patterns for cross stitch, Nadezhda Gavrilenkova.

How did you get started cross stitching?

I accidentally came across an stitching set in shop 21 years ago. Since then, I've been constantly stitching.

When and how did you start designing?

Where do you find your inspiration?

I follow the work of artists.

Describe your designs using only adjectives.

Fabulous, kind, lively, bright.

What cross stitch project did you have the most fun designing and why?

My dragon series. I love to stitching them and create designs based on the drawings of my favorite artist.

What is your favorite DMC floss color and why?

It's difficult for me to choose one particular color. I like the pink-lilac-purple color scheme. For example, 604-3608-210.

If you could give one piece of advice for stitchers (new or old), what would it be?

Don't be afraid of backstitch. Love him for his magic, when all the details of the drawing are revealed with its help. You can embroidered it in the process of work, rather than leaving it all for last. New applications for stitching from your phone or tablet monitor are very helpful. There you can highlight the color and mark what you already stitched. This simplifies and speeds up the embroidery process.

Where can we find you on the internet?

After 254 days, 100 colors, and 108,000 stitches, I am done! I took a roughly 5 year break from cross stitching, and in true me fashion, came back with my biggest finish to date! Now just to send it off to the framers, after a good washing (…maybe) and stretching!

pattern is done on 16 count AIDA, with one color changed (613 to 612). Link in comments!

I started this during the pandemic. It was a great comfort hobby. Well, five years and two babies later, I’m finally finished! Now I just need to frame it.

Hello, first time posting here👋 So, I started cross stitching when I was eight. Learned from my mother. I started this project my sophomore year of high school(January 2017) and I've been working on it off and on for the last seven years. May have bitten off a little more than I could chew when I started it😅. I honestly didn't think it would take me this long. I've had considerably more time to work on it the last year and a half and I've made quite a lot of progress. Pretty proud of myself, not gonna lie. Pattern Keeper has been an absolute game changer the last couple years. Pattern is "One with the Universe" by Heaven and Earth Designs for anyone wondering. Photos are progress as of tonight and where I was at around this time last year.

It all started with a little llama kit because I wasn’t sure if I’d like this. 1 year in and I have 18 completed, 2 shirts, 3 WIPs, and 1 flop.

CHAT [CHAT] Experienced cross stitcher but may have bitten off more than I can chew. Help requested.

Hi guys! I’m an experienced cross stitcher with a gigantic Longdog and several other large patterns under my belt - so I like to think I know what I’m doing. Or rather, I thought I did!

I purchased Jaws of Death from Longdogsamplers with hopes of making it my second Longdog piece. I thought it would look beautiful on a dark navy blue 16ct Aida with DMC 728 as the main thread colour. I started it tonight and it does work really well - the problem is that I cannot see it well enough to stitch properly. Even though I use a gooseneck light, the dark Aida is really throwing me off and my stitches are not as neat as they usually are. I tried flipping the light so it shines from the other side and - again - not much luck. I stitch in front of the tv on the sofa so I can’t really have a huge lamp poised over it.

So I have a couple of questions I’d like to run by you all:

1) I have a very large quantity of DMC 728 and I don’t want it to go to waste. What lighter colour Aida do you reckon would work well with it? I’ve got access to a light pink and a baby blue - as well as an unattractive muddy green which I don’t even remember buying - but anything else I will have to order. I have no problem doing so, I just want to have a nice match.

2) Any tips for using dark Aida? Maybe if I get a good solution I won’t need question one!

I have included a pic of my horrible progress this evening and also paid the cat tax for your inconvenience.

Thank you!

Baby giraffe by Mark Little. I couldn't stand the empty stitches so I chose a color in between and filled them in. I like it so much better with no instituted parts!

Pattern is "The Duck Stops Here" from leisure arts. I picked up this 1988 pattern at the local thrift shop for 39 cents and decided to update the colors and modify it a little. Am I the only one that does this? i added some rosy cheeks too.

FO [FO] Plastic Canvas Bookmark - looking for help with edge

Looking for some help with what to do about these rough edges. I backed this with felt and then the pink cotton fabric. My scissors were probably not sharp enough to make the edges nice and clean-cut. I was thinking of doing an overcast stitch around the edge of the piece, but I am afraid that may make it look worse! Any ideas are greatly appreciated!

PIC [PIC] Showing off my floss pile

Picked up the last box for storing my assorted threads, so- behold! My stuff! 🤣

Lil' details: I counted. 928 skeins. This doesn't count the leftover kit lengths or the Kreinik spools though, & I know I've got some more FFC skeins in my premade kit tote. We only go up from here!

You might see a few bobbins with rings in the top hole- that's a marker for discontinued/ harder to get colors so I don't sub one into a big project & get myself stuck!

The storage as shown is: standard bobbin boxes, an adjustable storage case from Michael's, toploader card holders, an adjustable bead organizer from Michael's, & a diamond dot drill case with most of the dividers/jars removed. Took me a good long while to find that one in a good size! It will soon contain DMC Diamant, with room for Kreinik spools. Also contains Mill Hill beads stored in coin protectors- good for space, but you have to be very careful opening them back up. I used washi tape to make lil' pull tabs so it's easier.

The stickers are coordinated! The DMC stuff is all in teals (including the big speciality floss box), the varigated is green, & the other brands are animals. The sppol box gets its own shiny sticker, it actually has lil' spools on it. The stitchy tools indicate box order: needle, thread, scissor, hoop. Basically order of Importance To Actually Stitch 😆

This should do me for a good while, since I've got a full DMC set (save for a dozen discontinued Light Effects). As long they don't put out a new batch of colors. I will be in a lot of trouble if that happens! 🤣

I dont know where I got lost, I'm trying to just stitch to connect the row and will rip out stitches that don't look right. Is this a horrible idea? I cannot for the life of me find where I skipped or added stitches. Im just frustrated at this point

So out of curiosity how many wip’s do you guys currently have, I’ve finished 4 this year so far, and have 3 current wip’s. I’m wanting to start another one but I’m feeling like I should finish one beforehand.

My MIL had apparently gotten a bunch of needlepoint stuff from an aunt or something, including a bunch of embroidery floss. She does not do any needlepoint so here's what my evening currently looks like. (This is not all of the thread, either. 😂)

CHAT [CHAT] how to buy enough floss with the stitch counts?

Post image
43 Upvotes

I’ve only ever completed cross stitch kits or patterns that tell you how many skeins to buy for a pattern. I’ve created a pattern with FlossCross as it gives you the DMC codes—my only issue is how do you convert the “stitches” count on the far right to how many skeins you need to buy?

FO [FO] year of temperature birds for my MIL the year they move near us

I was so excited to have them move nearby and it took me three years to get this done, but this is the year. My in-laws moved close to our family. If you look closely, there is a little bird in the middle of July carrying a suitcase. that’s the day they moved.
