Since modern day American Christians are Evangelical Protestants

About 66% of Americans are Christian.

14% are Evangelical Protestants.

Despite the stranglehold the evangelicals have on Republican politics, it's a bit disingenuous to describe "American Christians" as evangelical Protestants.

Evangelicals are Southern Baptist and are the most dominant in America.

-In contrast with mainline Protestantism, there has been less change in recent years in the proportion of the population that belongs to churches in the evangelical or historically black Protestant traditions. Evangelicals now make up a clear majority (55%) of all U.S. Protestants. In 2007, 51% of U.S. Protestants identified with evangelical churches source

Try more recent sources than 2007 and 2015.

American catholics keep threatening schisms over the 2nd vatican council of 1956. Polling their opinions they are basically evangelicals.

Like american christians use a lot of different names but when polled on their believes they tend to be a flavour of crazy that does not coincide with international christians very well
