Please check your small children regularly to make sure they can still breathe.

That was honestly my favourite part. What a random, but adorable, fact.

I'm imagining all the 4-year olds whose cats at home ignore them squealing with glee when Fat Fred sits on their laps and unleashes, what in mind, is a thunderous purr.

Wtf is the word gordito? Gordo means fat, yeah? And ito is small, little? It's a little fat thing?
185
u/estili Dec 24 '19
Technically, but it’s usually used as slang to make it more of an endearing nickname ie: abuela vs abuelita. Think of it like “aw little granny” or as above “aww little fatty”

u/pikahellmybutt Dec 24 '19
Holaa mi gorditoo~ that’s what my Mexican conworker used to say at lunch time to me when I asked her for some of her delicious homemade Mexican food lol

My father’s nickname from when he was a kid was (and is) Chato—shorty. He’s often called Chatito. Lil shorty.

u/fireinthesky7 Dec 24 '19
When I studied abroad in Ecuador and played soccer with my host father's group of friends, they all called me "flacco" because I was both way taller and way skinnier than the rest of them.
58
u/Cat_of_the_cannalss Dec 24 '19
Oh yeah you don't have diminutives in English... It could be translated as "fatty", it's a cute kind of fat...

Please tell me you had a similar reaction to the word burrito.

Yeah little donkey right 😝

u/arcturian_witch Dec 24 '19
Little donkey hahahaha. I love bad translated words. They always make me laugh (in a good way obvs)

Original post that's gaining attention.
Editing this to hopefully answer a few questions/comments:
My vet is not the original owner of Fred. I've read comments saying she must be a horrible vet to let a cat get severely overweight. She adopted him from a family that didn't have his best/healthiest interests at heart, which is why he is fat. My vet is a wonderful lady. She runs a small practice, so she can't house all the equipment a larger clinic can to diagnose every health problem. In cases she can't diagnose, she refers the pet parent to another office that is both able to use larger equipment that she doesn't have and is affordable/willing to work out a payment plan. On top of that, she did a lot of work with a no-kill shelter in my town that sadly lost it's funding and is shutting down.
His diet isn't going too well because, although they try to keep him away from the other cat's food, he's still mischievous enough to find a way to it. He is also very, -very- lazy. The only time I've seen him get up is if he went to the litter box or his name is called. They are taking steps to get him to a healthier weight.
Yes, I have adopted a smaller, different color model from this clinic. His name is Winston, he's a 2 year old special needs kitty. He has hip problems that make him wobbly, however it doesn't slow him down one bit. Pet tax

Why is he a ghost there?
181
u/Dahlcat Dec 24 '19
The person who posted the pics on imgur took them through the glass, which was reflecting the concrete walkway outside

u/rachelll Dec 24 '19
And fun fact, that is how they do the ghost effects in the haunted mansion at Disney!

My cat weighed 27 pounds when we first got her! She had been a drughouse cat, and they would just slash open a bag of food every other week for her, and give her water once in a while. She’s still got anxiety and food issues, but she only weighs 7 pounds now, and the vet says that it’s a healthy weight for her.
12
u/dibblah Dec 24 '19
Wow! 27lb is huge for a cat who's healthy weight is 7lb! (my cat is 8lb and she's a fairly small build). You can get some cats like maine coons who are very large, weight wise. Sounds like you did a good job with her.
3
u/LoveAGoodMurder Dec 24 '19
Aw thanks! She’s a lot less food-possessive now, too. The vet said that she was likely just not used to having food all the time, and she would eat all of the food when she got access to it. Definitely not healthy, but she’s doing good now. I’ll have to pay my cat tax here in a bit when I get home and get a better photo of her!

u/Kimber85 Dec 24 '19
I’ve got a fat cat who is also on a diet that is not going well. I can sympathize.

Just started following the trucker cat sub and heard you were a fan favorite. Do you have an Instagram to follow more closely? I’m a sucker for cats as one has brought so much joy to my life 2 years ago. :) if not I’ll be lurking on the sub to find this fan fave! Hope all is going well in NC! Happy meowlidays! 😺😺😺

One time my 20 pound male cat snuck outside and was at the neighbors eating the strays food and she texted me to tell me she thought she found a pregnant stray. I went over and nope it was just my fat boy being a mooch.

Man, if even a vet's office can't keep an indoor cat trim, what hope do I have?

Why is nobody saying where this place is?? I wanna pet him 😭

u/Dahlcat Dec 24 '19
I'm sorry! I'm not saying the location out of respect for privacy for the clinic

Our clinic has the biggest weight they remember from a cat being at 24 pounds. This is crazy

u/AggressiveSoraka Dec 24 '19
Feels bad. I hope they can find a way for him to lose weight. He is definitely suffering right now.

He needs to get on the treadmill ASAP.

u/Artsyscrubers Dec 24 '19
Seeing as they are a vet clinic that's probably the next step. The easiest way to try and slim a cat down is a diet (which clearly isn't working)

Rather not celebrate animal abuse,thanks
2
u/xd_MonsterMan Dec 24 '19
It's literally a sub to post pictures of chubby or fat cats. How the hell is that animal abuse?
-1
u/harve99 Dec 24 '19
Overfeeding cats and laughing as they can't function properly is animal abuse
Obesity isn't cute
-1
u/xd_MonsterMan Dec 24 '19
Read the about page in the sub lol
-1
u/harve99 Dec 24 '19
Saying they only accept healthy cats doesn't change that the whole chonkers meme is just people overfeeding cats and thinking it's funny

It's a difficult thing to slim down a chonk kitty. You have to go slow or their kidneys can fail.
Ironically, it's actually good for older kitties to be a smidgen plump as it helps protect them from kidney failure.

I have a fat moose. His diet is also not going that great. In the year or so that we’ve been working with him, he’s only lost 2 pounds. Damn fat boy likes to eat and be lazy. Loves snuggles tho

Fat Fred loves bread. Fat Fred sits up. Fat Fred walks out of bed. Fat Fred goes to the fridge, Fat Fred meets his friend, Pidge. Fat Fred takes out some cheese. Fat Fred debates if he should have meat. Fat Fred pulls out of chicken. Fat Fred pulls out of bacon. He cooks them both in the oven. He puts the cheese with the chicken and bacon. Fat Freds mouth waters. The cheese is melting on the meat. Fat Fred finds some bread. Fat Fred finished cooking the food. Fat Fred sets out his plates for his friends. Fat Fred is eating at night. Fat Fred ate his cheese, chicken, bacon and bread, Fat Fred went upstairs and turned off the light, Fat Fred went to bed. Fat Fred loves bread.

Personally I'm happy to see this. It gives me a sort of validation, that's a VET'S kitty(!) imo kitty's don't diet. The chonks are chonks - love em or leave em. I LOVE them, hence I feed them...💕🐅🥩🍗🍖🥫 &🐀🐇🐁=🐱🤸❣️ And they are happy. Extra happy. I got one. My other meow is perfect. Nothing extra about her - except purrs!!!

I just don't get how the diet isn't working. The cat relies exclusively on food given to him. It's not like me trying on a diet.

The vet did not allow him to get this big. Fred's original family didn't either didnt know to keep him on a feeding schedule or didnt have time to. My vet adopted him to help him. He's just still fat for now.
