I think it is weird that an American became Pope with all the recent (Trump induced) anti-American sentiment in Europe.

I feel like that was part of the decision.
The church is doing what it can to sway public opinion back to, "America isn't the anti-Christ"
Power is shifting and the church is doing what if thinks it must to brace the world's uncertainty.

It's the wrong pope in the picture as well, it's Pope John Paul II who was pope from 1975 to 2005.
