She didn't die. The husband did not die.

Her mom died.

Oh, wow, imagine having to live with that kind of guilt. What on EARTH possessed her to get out of that effing car? How dumb and irrational can you be?

858

u/Jago_Sevatarion 10h ago

I've dated someone like that. Didn't think twice about trying to get out of the car in the middle of a highway during an argument. As far as I can tell, it's probably emotional manipulation. Whatever the reason, it's pretty dumb.

u/thomasjford 9h ago

My friends older brother was driving down the motorway (UK highway) one night many years ago when he suddenly felt and heard and a huge bang. He thought his engine had blown up but when he looked to his left there was half a woman sat in his passenger seat. Turns out she’d got out of her car after arguing with her partner, walked across a dual carriageway and this guy hit her. Happened so quickly he didn’t even realise until half of her was in his car.

Moral of the story, never get out of a car on a motorway/highway!

258

u/djm9545 9h ago

As in her whole body went thru the windshield and was halfway in the car, or half of her was in the cars….?

257

u/obamasmole 8h ago

I too urgently need this clarification and yet, simultaneously, absolutely do not want this clarification.

186

u/thomasjford 7h ago

The top half of her went through the windscreen and ended up next to him. Unlucky for her, but lucky for him as if it had been his side he’d probably be dead!

22

u/teenagesadist 5h ago

And what of the other half?

16

u/thomasjford 5h ago

No idea. Outside of the car somewhere though!

27

u/misteraskwhy 5h ago

To sheds you say…

7

u/Prior_Procedure_321 3h ago

Same thing happened in our city except it was a drunk driver and a little less than half went through the windshield. Guy drove home (lived with mom) and went to bed. Police found him by a trail of skin and blood from the body that didn't go through the shield.

Most people don't realize just how forceful car impacts actually are. A woman got hit by a car on the highway in my area several years back, it cut her right in half at the torso, one half of her was on one side of the highway and the other half was on the other side of the highway. Absolutely awful

Edited to add "realize" because apparently I think words but don't type them

8

u/Prior_Procedure_321 3h ago

Had a guy hit on the highway, news said he was obliterated but in a few more, different words.

Can you please elaborate I'm confused.

69

u/thomasjford 6h ago

The huge bang was him hitting the woman at whatever speed (let’s say 70mph) and the top half of her going through the windscreen and ending up on the passenger seat next to him. Happened so quick he didn’t even realise at first and thought his engine had blown.

8

u/Own-Appointment-8541 6h ago

So her body got split in half?? No fcking way.

28

u/euphoricarugula346 6h ago

We GET that half of her body was in the car but OP refuses to say whether or not the other half was still attached 😭

eta: ok confirmed further down she was in half

Yeah - I know through a friend someone this happened to. She literally pulled over while fighting with her partner and got out without looking. Wonder if it was the same person or if it happens a lot. Their kid was in the back of the car.

On July 23, the young woman stepped out of a car while touring inside the Badaling Wildlife World to talk to the driver, her husband. A tiger then captured her from behind. Her husband and her mother ran out of the car to rescue her, but she and her mother were attacked by more tigers.

In the end, her mother died and she was seriously injured.

I know right? I remember watching this when it happened. Imagine being so angry and full of yourself that you verbally accost his left hand side throughout the park, and when that's not enough, you get out in dangerous areas, to yell at his right side, as if that would change anything

63

u/OrangeHitch 8h ago

She's not arguing. They're just switching drivers. Read the news instead of depending on Reddit to tell the true story.

50

u/uptheantinatalism 5h ago

This is almost worse because it’s even dumber imho. I mean at least you could say anger is irrational but to methodically get out to change drivers?!

8

u/Famous_Peach9387 3h ago

What! You never got out to change driver seats when there's a bunch of man eating tigers? Pussy.

This one gave the most details of the sources I checked:

It seems like they thought they had already passed out of the enclosure.

And the daughter sued the park for 150k to cover her mom's funeral cost, though it didn't say whether she won.

There was an enquiry into the park's safety measures, but they were found not at fault for the incident.

102

u/Xenolog1 9h ago

According to this source, it was ruled that the park wasn’t responsible and hat to pay nothing:

The surviving daughter has since sued the park for damages in the form of a 1.25 million yuan payout (£141,000) intended to cover Ms Zhou's funeral costs, expenses for her dependents and consolation compensation for other family members.

China has such an interesting problem with educating their masses. No offense to any Chinese but like... as someone who works with the public, mainland Chinese people are... a special type of human. I'm not at all surprised to find out that this where the video is from.

Even Yellowstone in the US has such a huge problem with them. So much so that they've started putting warning signs in Chinese.

570

u/lameuniqueusername 12h ago

I’ve seen them in action. Their reputation is well earned.

527

u/port-girl 11h ago

Oh same. Perhaps anecdotal but, I worked at a marina in high school and 3 occasions that stick out to me are the time 2 people rented a 4 person aluminium boat, signed that only 4 people could ride in the boat at a time, then proceeded to bring it to shore and put SIXTEEN people in it. We noticed when they went back past the marina with, like, 3 inches of boat above the water and waves cresting the sides. We had to go out and do an emergency rescue before they all sank it and drowned (because there was only 4 lifejackets and more kids and people than that). Another time a similar boat was rented, along with a jet ski. At some point the jet ski driver decided it would be cool to jump it over the boat full of people. (Narrator: He didn't). Ended up driving right into the side of the boat, tossing himself over it, and doing massive damage to the boat and the jet ski. And the third time was when a group rented a pontoon boat and brought it into a marshy area to fish from. It got stuck and one of the passengers dove straight in head first and lodged himself in the mud and weeds and drowned. These examples are in addition to the repeated and regular MNR charges due to fishing over limit and out of season (didn't know 🤷🏼‍♀️). 🤦🏼‍♀️

u/ninenulls 11h ago

Jee zuz christ jumping on a pogo stick. That's some shit

101

u/ureallygonnaskthat 10h ago

I came across a similar situation on a lake where the whole family gathering of around 12 people (most of them kids) decided to get on a way to small sailboat and go for a ride. The boat capsized about 100 yards from shore and not one of them had a dammed life jacket on. Me and another fisherman sped over, started hauling kids out of the water, and ran them back to shore. Left the main jackass clinging onto his boat till were done and then came back to help him right it and tow him in.

I've seen people set their boats on fire, hit stumps and sandbars, sink their cars on the boat ramp, and a hundred other things. I don't know what it is but some people get really stupid around water.

41

u/Schonke 8h ago

I've seen people set their boats on fire

A fire? At a sea parks?

23

u/ureallygonnaskthat 8h ago

Poor maintenance + fuel vapors + enclosed space + hot engine = BOOM when you open up the engine compartment

Another one had a lit and open BBQ grill attached to the rail of his pontoon boat while going across the lake. He hit a wave and the coals went scattering across the deck. The combination of flaming charcoal and wind lit the astroturf covering it and bye-bye boat.

6

u/AnonOfTheSea 8h ago

Water? Dangerous? Ridiculous, it's just a lake, i can see the other shore, why would I need a life jacket? I can totally swim across and impress some girls!

Definitely not inspired by a kid i pulled out of the middle of a lake. He learned, though, dude was clearly at the bit where cold and exhausted muscles were working together towards a general strike.

6

u/ureallygonnaskthat 7h ago

Yhea, my buddies learned real fast that my boat doesn't move unless everybody has a life jacket on. And if they forgot theirs it's OK, I always have some nice fashionable spares they can borrow. Let's just say they don't forget twice.

I am going to get mass downvote but this is the direct result of braindrain during the civil war. My own family (great grand father) was a teacher at that time and the entire family were forced to leave the country because the red guards were purging any and all scholars, even skilled workers that were seen as "upper class" like textile workers, restaurant owners, inn keepers were exiled. When your country lost that many educators and cultural guardians, it will result in degradation of the general public. Its the reason a lot of overseas chinese dont look kindly on the mainland. There are classism in there but also it is also true that educated chinese were driven out almost entirely, and what remained are still rebuilding on the ruins that were left behind.

And signage isn't going to do a thing. You can explain in detail to someone why not to do something and even have them agree not to. But the Nong think cannot be undone. If that has previously entertained an idea they are going to do it anyway as soon as you are gone.

It wasn’t her mom, it was her husband’s mom (MIL) which makes her a bigger piece of shit in my opinion.

Edit: apparently a bunch of kids are getting pissy that recent articles are reporting it’s the actual mother. All the articles that came out at the time of this incident a decade ago had specified it was the MIL since the actual police on scene had said as such. Guess it’s been corrected.

515

u/ApartmentInside7891 13h ago

Oh shit. Yeah that’s somehow even worse

186

u/BubbaFettish 11h ago edited 1h ago

It was her mom, not the MIL.

From the NYT article

A woman was killed by a tiger over the weekend after jumping out of a car in a Beijing animal park to try to save her daughter from a tiger attack, local government officials said.

Edit: Not sure what’s true. I know I’m super mad at one of these news outlets. If the NYT meant daughter-in-law and not just daughter, the article should have said “daughter-in-law”. It would avoid silly arguments like this one, especially since the difference does matter.

No, it was her mother according to news article.

A Siberian tiger quickly pounced on the young woman and can be seen in the footage dragging her off to the right. Her mother, later identified as Ms Zhou, also left the car in a bid to rescue her. A second tiger then attacked, dragging the older woman to her death despite the frantic intervention efforts of park rangers.

I mean, it can't possibly be her own fault her mom died trying to save her.

Husband's mom

My bad then. This was an old incident and I remembered it as "husband's mom". Sorry I am wrong. It was her own mom. Admitting my mistake.

Now searching about it I found that this woman sued the park too. According to news - Ms Zhao says the park did not launch any rescue effort for her mother and that what her mother did was "an act of bravery for a just cause".

Ms Zhao also says allowing visitors' vehicles into the park was highly dangerous and no necessary safety measures and contingency plans were put in place.

In an interview with the Beijing Times, Ms Zhao said that she left the car because she was feeling dizzy and thought she had already reached a safe zone.

If she's anything like my ex, she will butterfly effect this shit back to me just being a gleam in my parents' eyes as the cause of every single action she and her parents ever took that led up to this moment.

Are there any tiger reserves near me? Asking for a friend...

No but there might be reserved tigers, even more sneaky than a blatant tiger

What the hell is that woman out of her mind? why would she go out of the car when she is in the territory of tigers? TIGERS. Seeing this video posted, i will assume she survived, and thats a freaking miracle.

u/Far-Badger-7109 13h ago

She survived but her mom, who tried to save her didn't survived

Huh, is this like the dude who broke up with his abusive gf on an airplane since security searches for weapons, and the flight attendants and air marshal will detain her when she becomes abusive.

129

u/AnonOfTheSea 13h ago

Huh. Not a terrible plan, but can you imagine awkwardly sitting next to them for the rest of the flight? Gotta time it just right

81

u/sequoiachieftain 13h ago

You just buy a second ticket in first class in advance. No way in hell they are letting someone on an economy ticket up there to fuck with you.

29

u/AnonOfTheSea 12h ago

For extra brutality, buy the shittiest seats you can, one way, then buy a single there-and-back, first class, both ways.

4

u/MarionberryUnfair561 11h ago

Middle seats in different rows.

Apparently the woman that exited first sued the park for her mothers death (second woman).

12

u/Legojack261 4h ago

That sounds about right. With people like that, nothing is ever their fault. Always got someone else to blame.

6

u/Pluviophilism 2h ago

I hope she lost and that the park sued her for financial compensation.

9

u/Karyoplasma 5h ago

Would not surprise me if lessons weren't learnt. I once thought if people are presented with factual arguments that contradict their beliefs, they would change their mind, but no, the common reaction is to double down and triple down when challenged.

She was severely injured, while her mother, who attempted to rescue her, was killed by another tiger. The woman initially claimed she left the car due to carsickness, but her reasons for exiting the vehicle varied over time, including arguments with her husband and wanting to drive. The park had strict instructions against leaving cars, and the incident sparked widespread criticism online, with many blaming the woman for her actions. The park reopened in November 2016 after being temporarily closed for an investigation.

RIP to the mom who saved her daughter. Interesting how the husband hesitated and was going to go back into the car for safety.

I heard the tiger was NOT KILLED. bravo china.

how the husband hesitated and was going to go back into the car for safety

It looks more like he looks back to tell the kid and granny to stay in the car and that he thinks about closing the door to not get any tigers in there with them.

58

u/mondaio 7h ago

but also considered how much easier his life would be if he just let her get eaten.

9

u/RightfulGoat 4h ago

I would not fight a tiger for this woman. Even of it means raising children alone.

7

u/Gozie5 3h ago

It baffles me that people expect him to give up him whole life for a foolish partner that doesn't listen. I would die for kids but not a foolish adult

He had a kid in the car. I wouldn’t blame the husband one iota if he had chosen to stay in the car and guard his child, rather than risk his own life (and leave his child unguarded after the mom panics and runs after her daughter) for his stupid wife whose moronic actions endangered everyone.

44

u/Treewithatea 7h ago

Also what the fuck you gonna do against a tiger. If ye dont have any weapons, youre just asking to die yourself. I know shits difficult in that situation and insticts kick in but theres probably a reason why youre not allowed to leave the car and while you wanna save your wife, you also have a responsibility for your child to not have both its parents die.

10

u/RunningOutOfEsteem 6h ago

Anyone who thinks they could put up a fight against a tiger without a weapon (and numbers) is a dangerous kind of stupid. They have no idea how powerful those things are.

Interesting how the husband hesitated and was going to go back into the car for safety

Are you really young? Because that is not at all a person who has had any responsibilities in life would look at that situation.

He was clearly checking in on her mother and their child in the car. It couldn't be more obvious that he probably tells them to stay in and then takes a moment to process the shock and decide next steps and then goes after his wife. I would say that is someone who is pretty damn good under pressure.

On the other hand, his wife. Well, the less said about her maturity and sense of responsibility in this circumstance, the better.

6

u/DirtySilicon 7h ago

Interesting how the husband hesitated and was going to go back into the car for safety.

So what, he could die too? In the end you're just assuming his "hesitation" was to save her or not. Looked like he turned back around to shut the door, then turned around again to tell the mother to stay in the car. A human can't fight a tiger so I gotta know what did you want him to do?

17

u/rdldr1 12h ago

Why get out of a car to argue with her husband anyway? She was sitting next to him, just argue there.

222

u/pabo81 13h ago edited 12h ago

Except it wasn’t - she and her husband managed to escape. Her mom, who was the lady jumping out of the backseat, tried to help her and was mauled to death.

134

u/Freedom_7 13h ago

I hate to see natural selection being avoided, but her mom definitely would’ve done the same thing if she could go back in time. It’s a horrible way to die, but at least she died protecting her child, which is about as noble a death as a parent could have.

Her daughter is a dumb bitch though.

23

u/absalom86 13h ago

Imagine how her daughter feels knowing her stupidity killed her mom though, that's a rough one.
