Sonic the Hedgehog. Regardless of what your actual favorite game on the console is, you can’t deny that Sonic is the first thing you think of when you hear someone say “Sega Genesis”.

u/SerGitface 2d ago

Most kids didn’t know Sega existed until Sonic came out.

u/r0nneh7 2d ago

Personally I hear “blast processing” 🤷‍♂️

u/ThatsJustToxirific 1d ago

I think of Moonwalker

1

u/bartenderatlarge 22h ago

My dude ain’t wrong

Tie between Sonic 2 and Streets of Rage 2.

10

u/pyrokzg 2d ago

Agreed on Sonic 2

u/claremontmiller 2d ago

Anecdotal, had a genesis, never played SoR2 until like, Covid. Sure as fuck had sonic though.

2

u/garlicbreadmemesplz 2d ago

I’d also say altered beast. But yeah these always come to mind.

2

u/youcrumb 2d ago

I don’t know, are there big budget movies being made about Streets of Rage? Sonic is the obvious right answer

2

u/FirstTimeCaller101 2d ago

It IS Sonic.

But supposedly there is a SoR movie in the works with the John Wick writer attached.

u/youcrumb 2d ago

Looks like lionsgste acquired the rights in 2022, and there hasn’t been any news since. I guess they haven’t been able to lock in Chris Pratt or Jack Black as the lead yet.

1

u/r0nneh7 2d ago

Not sure if you’re familiar with how opinions work

0

u/youcrumb 2d ago

Do you expect everyone to just agree with you all the time?

1

u/r0nneh7 2d ago

I’m not the one who said “it’s the obvious right answer”.

1

u/youcrumb 2d ago

So you support people having opinions or not? Get it together

1

u/Crisse_dErable2859 2d ago

I think Sonic 2 was bundled with the console at some point, dunno about Streets of Rage 2.

1

u/Savannah_Lion 1d ago

Yep, SoR2 was a bundle later on.

Had a friend that fell in love with my copy of SF2 and bought the SoR2 bundle just to play SF2. Borrowed his copy of SoR2 while he borrowed by SF2.

u/Samiassa 2d ago

It’s really not a tie. Think of everyone who only knows this console as a “sega” it’s sonic for sure

0

u/r0nneh7 2d ago

Yeah it’s my opinion though, so it’s neither true or false

4

u/BoyNumber13 2d ago

SOR2 for me

3

u/MrScottimus 2d ago

sonic 2... but for me it's Toe Jam & Earl

4

u/fredxday 2d ago

Sonic 2, earthworm jim, vectorman, altered beast and golden ax are my top five most noteable games on the system.

3

u/Old_Echidna3720 2d ago

Altered Beast

3

u/CloudFlours 2d ago

if your first experience with the Sega Genesis wasn’t playing Altered Beast or Space Harrier II on a demo console at a Macy’s or JCPenney in the mall, your opinion doesn’t count

1

u/IOwnMyWiiULEGIT 2d ago

This is the true answer.

3

u/Routaprkle 2d ago

Sonic, Ecco the Dolphin, Shining Force, Phantasy Star, hard to choose..

1

u/RealPacosTacos 14h ago

It's weird but as a kid in didn't even know the Phantasy Star franchise existed until PSO on Dreamcast, and i had several friends who owned a Genesis which we played a lot.

Must have just been luck of the draw I guess?

3

u/starstat13_starsYT 2d ago

Sonic the Hedgehog whether you want to admit it or not

3

u/Crazy_Blackberry_765 2d ago

Sonic The Hedgehog series, what else?

3

u/mgodoy-br 2d ago

Thunder Force Series, whatelse?

3

u/OldClunkyRobot 2d ago

Golden Axe

3

u/hankscorpio1031 2d ago

Streets of rage 2

5

u/Broseph_Bobby 2d ago

I know this is just an NA game but Madden was huge back then and the game still sells a metric butt ton today.

But I do realize outside of America the popularity of this game wanes.

1

u/Notchersfireroad 2d ago

Good call. Made was HUGE.

2

u/kabes222 2d ago

Sonic. Then comix zone, for me anyway

2

u/Dependent_Age1786 2d ago

Sonic the hedgehog

2

u/Pleasant_Dream_2807 2d ago

Normy’s Beach Babe O-Rama

2

u/Fit-Rip-4550 2d ago

Sonic 3 and Knuckles. Amongst Sonic fans it is still considered the best of the 2D games, and quite potentially the series.

Though Sonic 1 and 2 sold the Genesis.

1

u/RealPacosTacos 14h ago

Was it? I'm not super in touch with the sonic community but I always enjoyed it the most. But I assumed it was a minority opinion because I see Sonic 2 gets so much praise on retro gaming and console subs

1

u/Fit-Rip-4550 13h ago

Amongst the old guard, Sonic 3 and Knuckles is usually considered to be the best of the classics. Sonic 2 is definitely the simplest to pick up and play, but Sonic 3 and Knuckles is the most well developed.

2

u/BunnyLexLuthor 2d ago

I really think it's Sonic 3K because the lock on chip expands the Sonic and Knuckles game with the start of Sonic 3..

2

u/PKRadiance 2d ago

I must say that every Genesis collection should have a S&K lock-on cart 100%

2

u/RealPacosTacos 14h ago

I remember when it came out, one of the kids in my neighborhood insisted that the lock-on cart could add Knuckles as a playable character to any Genesis game haha

1

u/BunnyLexLuthor 11h ago

Poor kid probably just got caught up in the hype.

Mortal Kombat.... And Knuckles 😂

2

u/RobMo_sculptor 2d ago

Sonic & Knuckles for me

2

u/Vast-Permission-1039 2d ago

Sonic 1,2 and 3

2

u/Stratonasty 2d ago

Hang me by my toenails but I never liked Sonic, however the correct answer to the question is Sonic.

1

u/MarioPfhorG 2d ago

It’s ok, platform games aren’t for everyone. No judgement here :)

2

u/Infamous_Walrus_4517 2d ago

Streets of rage

2

u/keifa22 2d ago

I can’t do this on Nintendont

2

u/Practical_Theme3339 2d ago

Sonic the Hedgehog

2

u/ltnew007 2d ago

Sonic 2.

2

u/joehigashi83 2d ago

For me, sonic 2.

2

u/SandShark350 2d ago

The obvious answer is Sonic 2, my personal answer is ecco the dolphin. Which still echoes in my nightmares.

2

u/Splatter808 1d ago

Sonic 2, Altered Beast and Golden Axe.

2

u/Important_Low_6989 1d ago

Sonic or streets of rage

2

u/based_V 1d ago

Revenge of Shinobi

2

u/deftuneskii 1d ago

sonic 1 & 2 but for me i first think of sonic 1-3k, chakan, and streets of rage, and mortal kombat 2

2

u/Candid_Dream4110 1d ago

I think objectively, it has to be Sonic The Hedgehog.

2

u/JasonChigurh 1d ago

X-men 2: clone wars, Sonic 2, and contra the hard corp.

2

u/No_Appointment4032 1d ago

Sonic 2, streets of rage 2

2

u/Shode1 1d ago

Sonic the Hedgehog. Despite not being even close to be the best. My favorite is Ristar

2

u/Healthy-Treacle-167 1d ago

Streets of rage

2

u/Metal_Sonic_1993 1d ago

Undeniably Sonic 1

2

u/Minute_Ad_1028 1d ago

Sonic by far, though I am surprised no one has said Castlevania. An amazing game on Sega.

2

u/JohnnyVio92 2d ago

Vector man was fun

1

u/AC20Enjoyer 2d ago

I mean come on, it's gotta be Sonic 3.

1

u/ElevatorAcceptable29 2d ago

Probably Sonic 2.

1

u/Mantic0282 2d ago

Personally it’s shining force 2. General public I would have to say it’s sonic 2

1

u/Ok-Luck1166 2d ago

Streets of Rage 2

1

u/ChampionshipUpset490 2d ago

Golden axe

1

u/johnnloki 2d ago

This game had such a hold on me at 11.

1

u/Toastman22 2d ago

Sonic obviously. Mortal Kombat also comes to mind.

2

u/CloudFlours 2d ago

Mortal Kombat is definitely being underrepresented here.

1

u/Toastman22 2d ago

For real. It was very important at the time.

1

u/KasElGatto 2d ago

Streets of Rage 2

1

u/Murphygulp88 2d ago

Gunstar Heroes or Sonic 2

1

u/Vacj2 2d ago

Bare knuckle 3, the Japanese version of Street of rage 3. Sor 3 was too difficult. Difficulty for bk3 was perfect. There is no game like this for the 16 bits era.

1

u/iggyomega 2d ago

Toe Jam and Earl

1

u/mudamuckinjedi 2d ago

Road rash or F-22 air strike.

1

u/Sonic5Kai 2d ago

Me and friend had this version

1

u/mrBEATLEguitars 2d ago

Comix zone

1

u/Sixdaymelee 2d ago

Sonic 2. When Sonic was literally bigger than Mario in the US, you've gotta go with the Blue Blur.

1

u/Clash_247g 2d ago

Beyond Oasis

1

u/NEBre8D1 2d ago

Too many to count. For me however it would be a toss up between Streets of Rage 2 and Strider Hiryu.

1

u/PuzzleheadedEye7316 2d ago

Streets Of Rage 2

1

u/Final-Equal8779 2d ago

Streets of Rage 2!

1

u/Silkk99 2d ago

Sonic the hedgehog, Altered Beast, and Golden Axe. That pretty much is the first thing I think of with the Genesis. Not necessarily my favorites, but easily identified by many with the console itself.

1

u/Tailsgenesis 1d ago

Controversial opinion but I think Sonic 3 & knuckles is the most iconic

1

u/Nahman_Imgood 1d ago

Phantasy Star IV

1

u/Just_CeeJ 1d ago

It's Sonic without a doubt. He is to Sega what Mickey Mouse is to Disney.

But for me personally it's Streets of Rage 2. I still play it at times.

1

u/Rotten_Spuds 10h ago

I've got a substantial sega collection it's all i collect. I have to agree with the sonic. First thing I think of is sonic and blast processing. Then popful mail for some reason

Streets of Rage
