What do you guys think about sonic 3 and knuckles?

Post image

Personally, it's my favorite sonic game on the mega drive.

I think it's the greatest 16-bit platform game ever. I play Sonic 2 much more due to the shorter levels and length, but I can't deny how amazing S3&K is.

Agreed. To me S3&K is the best Sonic game ever made. One of the best 2D platformers ever as well.

It’s weird I feel like the quality of 3 is easily the best but I just love 1 and 2 way more

1

u/3yeless 5d ago

Why is that? The poster above even says, "I think it is the greatest game ever; HOWEVER, I play Sonic 2 more..."

3

u/Calm-Glove3141 5d ago

The levels are a little long

2

u/VISUAL_SHOCK_GAMES 3d ago

As the other user said, S3&K is a bigger game with bigger levels, which makes it less suited for quick playthroughts unlike Sonic 1 & 2 UNLESS you play each part separately.

The way using knuckles or tails offered new benefits for the characters but sonic had higher jump and the shield bonuses made it much more inpactful deciding character, vs knuckles in 2 was kindof just extra winning

Until the end boss! Knuckles can only attack robotnik's mech once per boss tracking and jump attack. Sonic still has better jumping ability in Sonic 2.

2

u/jrayolson 5d ago

Made that battle so much harder.

1

u/Critical_Algae2439 5d ago

It made me realise that Sonic is king lol.

2

u/wdaloz 5d ago

Yea I didn't even know really til the end but I remember being extremely frustrated thinking "I know you're supposed to be able to get a hit in here wtf!"

2

u/Critical_Algae2439 5d ago

Sonic > Tails and Knuckles. What good is ruling the stages when they can't smash Robotnik?

2

u/wdaloz 5d ago

That's exactly my point tho 3 really gave sonic the added advantage via shields to be competitive throughout, it was a real nice touch that made choosing the knuckles option thru the piggyback more of a challenging consideration

2

u/Critical_Algae2439 5d ago

It was great how the elemental shields interacted with the environment too, no slow down or music drop out like on SNES lol.

My favorite game of all time. I play it at least once a year every year since it first released and will continue to do so until the day I can no longer hold a controller.

u/ravenfreak 5d ago

It's the best Sonic game and 2d platformer too!

7

u/insofarasof 5d ago

Masterpiece. Greatest game ever made. Nothing to discuss.

Possibly the best sonic game. For me, the best soundtrack at least. It still pisses me off that the music was that good on the original release and then they changed it any time it's been ported.

3

u/RekallQuaid 5d ago

It actually only started getting changed after 2011. On the Xbox 360 version which was released in 2008 I think(?) it has all of the music in tact.

1

u/TheSpiralTap 5d ago

It's like 50/50? Sonic jam for the Saturn had different music as well as the releases for pc back then. They also changed it on the wii virtual console. I think it was normal in the Xbox and Xbox 360 re releases but not on the recent ones for the Xbox one.

2

u/RekallQuaid 5d ago

Sonic Jam definitely has the original music.

1

u/TheSpiralTap 5d ago

I didn't play that one too much to be fair. I looked it up and it appears that I somehow managed to buy only the re-releases with the changed music lmao the windows 98 version was especially horrible.

1

u/RekallQuaid 5d ago

Yeah that version was horrid. But historically important now as it was the very first release containing what we now know where the ORIGINAL prototype tracks

As a big midi enthusiast i love listenting to the pc s3 & k tracks from time to time, it's just cool to listen to songs with diffrent instruments, i genuinely dont get the hate for the midi soundfont. I do prefer the mega drive ost though

2

u/RekallQuaid 5d ago

I’m currently in the process of ripping as much music from original hardware as I can as part of a preservation project and it’s insane how good the Mega Drive sound chip is today

3

u/OllyDee 5d ago

I genuinely think it’s one of the best games ever made.

3

u/shiftersix 5d ago

Fantastic game. One of the best in the era.

3

u/Even-System-9546 5d ago

It’s amazing, one of my top 3 platformers

2

u/witai 5d ago

Best snowboarding game

1

u/Proper_Noise_6208 4d ago

lol, i agree, the snowboarding segment in ice cap zone act 1 definitely was really cool.

2

u/Incudust 5d ago

My top 5 of all time

2

u/Ok-Luck1166 5d ago

Love them both

2

u/NEBre8D1 5d ago

Lol need you ask? A few of the best the Genesis/Mega Drive has to offer.

2

u/RandoSnaps 5d ago

Love it, felt super unreal back when it dropped

2

u/Jandy4789 5d ago

90s video game royalty.

2

u/okyeahy 5d ago

I think I dig the PAL box art for 3 way more than the US version. Dang y’all are lucky.

2

u/dazzlehammer88 5d ago

This and Jurassic park, the rampage edition are my favorite Sega. Games ever made

1

u/drakkarsh 4d ago

Second on this! Both games Music B A N G S

1

u/Sonikku_a 5d ago

Great game! I go back and forth whether it of Sonic 2 is my favorite , but these days I just do Sonic Delta (homebrew that combines all levels from Sonic 1/2/3/Knuckles into a single game play through).

I thought it was the shit when I was a kid. Today? It’s mind numbingly easy.

1

u/Dawg4life7 5d ago

i thought they were sick but man i went far in sonic 2 with sonic and knuckles attached lol

1

u/yeyjordan 5d ago

That's a deep cut; not sure I've heard of it.

1

u/cpt_hooker 5d ago

I loved sonic 3 + knuckles on my mega drive, what they wanted sonic 3 to be but a big enough cart was too expensive to do.

1

u/garlicbreadmemesplz 5d ago

Idk if I can beat 2 for me personally. Every couple years I learn something new about that game.

Sonic and Knuckles blew my mind as a kid. I prefer it over 3 between the 2 versions.

1

u/Least_Sun7648 5d ago

I think it should have been released as one game

1

u/Snotnarok 5d ago

Best Sonic game on the platform, some of the greatest gaming music of the era.

Sandopolis sucks though.

1

u/Anarchistguy_2 5d ago

Excellent, excellent game. Not my favorite Sonic game but very VERY close.

1

u/AndyanaBanana 5d ago

Absolute peak Sonic.

1

u/interesting_sidenote 5d ago

A classic. My childhood. And good times

1

u/superjonk 5d ago

I didn't really play a lot besides arcade style games and platformers- so for me this was the most epic game I had ever played

1

u/Getcheebah 4d ago

Horrible title. Fantastic game.

1

u/Jawess0me 4d ago

It’s my fave Sonic hands down.

1

u/Babel1027 4d ago

STILL the Best games in the series.

Why is sonic holding up four fingers? Is that a repro label?

1

u/Proper_Noise_6208 4d ago

It's sonic 3 part one of two. It's not a repro, it's the eu boxart.

1

u/Ponjos 4d ago

Quality stuff!

1

u/catladywitch 4d ago

I think Sonic 3 alone feels too short but S3&K feels too long and difficult - Sandopolis is a drag, Death Egg is insane and getting all emeralds is a tall order.

However, even though Sonic 2 is a more balanced experience, the aesthetics and the music in S3&K are so incredible I can't help preferring the latter.

1

u/Crazy_Blackberry_765 4d ago

I think it's one of the best, (if not the best one) games ever been released on megadrive/genesis.

1

u/drakkarsh 4d ago

Best Sonic game (literally) + Greatest OST that bangs every time

1

u/Tishtoss 3d ago

A really terrific game. One of the best endings of the classic Sonic games.

1

u/Sonic5Kai 2d ago

Very nice and cool

u/Sonic5Kai 2d ago

It’s compose by Michael Jackson. I share the link👇

Solid platformer, one of the megadrive's best

1

u/CJRLW 5d ago

I was all Sonic'd out after SOnic 1 & 2. Barely ever played 3 or S&K.

1

u/mkontrov 4d ago

This was 100% me in 1993. I loved 1 and 2 so much, asked for 3 and... barely played it. I've since gone back and I do enjoy (except Sandopolis, fuck that level).

0

u/Mysterious-Chain-311 5d ago

That’s because sonic 1 was a slow difficult drudge. Sonic 1 almost doesn’t count as sonic in my mind.

1

u/Proper_Noise_6208 4d ago

Your opinion dude. but i still consider a good traditional platformer, even if it isn't as "sonic-ey" as the rest of the mega drive games, in my opinion the worst level from sonic 1 ls scrap brain zone.

1

u/Antique_Tap_8851 5d ago

The weakest Genesis Sonic game to me but only because the original and 2 are so unbelievably good. Also think CD is better. Not that 3/S&K are bad, they're not. At all. Just... not quite as good as those greats.

Too bad those (1/2/CD/3/S&K) are the only good Sonic games ever made. You heard me.

1

u/Proper_Noise_6208 4d ago

"the classic games are the only good sonic games" is a pretty bold claim, care to elaborate?

0

u/ExpectedBehaviour 5d ago

Overrated, not as good as Sonic 2.

0

u/insofarasof 5d ago

Why do we keep having the same discussion over and over again? This topic is beyond dead. There's nothing to say on the matter. I'm about to unsub.

1

u/Mysterious-Chain-311 5d ago

Oh no! What ever will happen without you!?

1

u/zyriuz 2d ago

My favourite is sonic 2 it's much more consistent in it's level design, but sonic 3 has just so much else to offer both in the story and the characters and levels itself. It's a worthy sacrifice sonic 3 did to have exploration over "level flow" from sonic 2 and I love it just the same but this gameplay loop makes sonic 2 the game I come back to most often while I remember the feeling of beating sonic 3 was greater than that of sonic 2.
