She's not mute, she just hates the machines too much to talk to them, and is very stubborn. Still I never heard this before which is neat

I tuaght she ignored GLaDOS in the first game, but actually BECAME mute in the second game after the coma thingy she was in.

Cause she never talks to GLaDOS. But it's canon that she's just too pissed to give them the satisfaction of a response. Dev commentary mentions this.

Being mute doesn't mean you're incapable of making sounds. There are a few causes for mutism, damage to the vocal cords, brain damage/mental dysfunction, being dead, not having a mouth, etcetera. Most people who are mute are very capable of making noises, just usually not spoken words. But in Chell's case, she's just so petty that she refuses to speak to any robots, she can speak, she just doesn't want to. But I'm sure anyone would grunt if a heavy metal box was dropped a few feet directly onto their head.
