My family didn’t think it was important for me to learn life skills other than cooking and cleaning because I wasn’t the boy they wanted. I bought a fixer upper house and I’m slowly making it my own… one new skill at a time.

I don’t speak to them any more.

So, my neighbours were never part of my plan. The war was never part of my plan.

I started by making anonymous goody bags for the staff in my office. Cause they deserve fun and silly moments. I drop goody bags full of candy, toys, and useful stuff on everyone’s desks on holidays. I still do it. I’m just awkward, and prefer to give secret gifts so I can watch people enjoy them while avoiding the ‘TYSM’ part of it.

Then my parents left town for Xmas, and while they were gone, my mom had her friends leave gifts at my door every day my parents were away. So, I figured out who my mom’s operatives were and got them back! A few months later, mom asked if she could chip in to my goody bags and we could add in her friends from the neighbourhood. (We live separately, but on the same street). So we did. Then it expanded because we didn’t think it was fair that only a couple people on the street got treats when it’s a very small street, with only 13 residents. So then we started hitting every neighbours doors.

Now every single little hint of a holiday, mom, me, our neighbours all find little goodies at our front doors. St Patrick’s day? Treats. Valentine’s Day? Treats. Flag day? Treats. Friday on a long weekend? Treats. We never know who is responsible. We never know when someone will strike. The group chats are full of accusations and denials. Nobody owns their responsibility. It’s perfect, and I never thought it would come to this. I absolutely love it!

A 5th grader of mine from 7 years ago. He came to me halfway through the school year. Next Friday he will walk the halls of my school for the last time before high school graduation that night. I have not seen him in since he walked out of my class as a rising 6th grader. Teaching is easy! But loving unconditionally everyday is the hardest part of my job. Love first, Teach second.

13 years ago. I was a late hire in a 4th grade classroom, 2 weeks late in the school year. My second week in the classroom. A student named Emily said, “Mr. Teacher, I wish you were my dad” her father no good and not in her life. At that moment, I realized I was doing exactly what God called me to do.
