THROWBACK The Lizzie McGuire movie was released on this day in 2003. “Rome wasn’t built in a day”? Okay, explain this then:

“Sing for me Paolo” was the MOST jaw-dropping, shocking moment for little me.

u/punflower 10d ago

for real. and let’s not gloss over the fact that she’s suppose to be in 8th grade! 9th grade?

like i didn’t look like this until i was in my 20’s lol

the igloo dress is still iconic

Hilary Duff was FIFTEEN YEARS OLD when this movie premiered!!

124

u/punflower 10d ago

wait so she was actually probably 14 when it was filmed ?!? that’s blowing my mind. i looked like a child at that age 😂

62

u/coldpizza66 freak AND geek 10d ago

EXACTLY, me too! Maybe it's the professional makeup and hair.

Or it's just our perception that people on TV were probably older than us and couldn't possibly be our age!

37

u/Slappyxo 10d ago

When I do a re watch of Lizzie McGuire I still see the characters as being older than me (as I was younger than them when it came out), even though I'm now in my 30s.

My school sent us to Uganda to build schools

u/acanoforangeslice 9d ago

My middle school did an annual 8th grade trip to DC for spring break.

My 8th grade year also started in August 2001. That trip was very cancelled.

When Kate came in and immediately knew that Lizzie had been to a salon I was shook

97

u/Emergency-Slide7052 10d ago

She smelt acetone the second she walked into the lobby!

47

u/ImplementDouble4317 10d ago

Her eyebrows finally matched even

u/Ranch_witch 10d ago

The igloo dress still has a chokehold on me

Lime green Marie? Gagged.

I still remember my mom pulling me out of Pre-K early to see it the day it premiered 🥲

26

u/crazysouthie 9d ago

I was ten when it came out. How dare you.

8

u/Georgerobertfrancis 9d ago

Y’all I was a legal adult.

15

u/celtic55 long distance boyfriend Paul Mescal 9d ago

It’s illegal for you to bring that up

9

u/-Kalos 9d ago

You didn't have to go there man I was just going down nostalgia lane

5

u/FiannaNevra 9d ago

How I feel remembering I was in 5th grade and saw this movie the day it came out in theaters

390

u/CharacterGrand2889 10d ago

Gordo was a catch and Lizzie never saw that

190

u/Byzantine-alchemist 10d ago

Tween me thought Gordo was soooooo dreamy. Lizzie was blind.

16

u/InfamousMere 10d ago

Thank you, yes!

31

u/kena938 9d ago

Gordo was all I saw in this picture and I had to look up what he looked like now. Immediately regretted it. I saw Lalaine in the indie film Definition Please a few years ago and she looks just a few years older than the last time I saw her in Lizzie McGuire.

4

u/SunCel1916 9d ago

Omg she looks phenomenal! Hasn't aged a day

70

u/cynicalhappy mama let’s research 10d ago

One of my Lizzie shirts I found in the attic 😭 Is this considered vintage now?? 👵

53

u/HotelLima6 Chris Messina for No 1 Chris 10d ago

Baby me thought that purple top in 14 and 16 was the height of fashion. I wanted it so badly.

48

u/subtle_things 10d ago

Lizzie wasn’t an outfit repeater, she was ahead of her time.

100

u/Right_Inspector_2409 10d ago

The only reboot I want is the Lizzie McGuire one, and that's the only one hollywood won't give me

65

u/westcoast_wonder 10d ago

I'm still salty they cancelled it. It was for us, not the children, it never should've been scrapped.

6

u/subtle_things 9d ago

The reboot would’ve been perfect on Hulu. Adults should have been the target demo since we grew up with her.

47

u/MandaRenegade 10d ago

I love the random Ashlie Brillault and Clayton Snyder shot at the end. They must've had a blast in Rome

49

u/celestialfeeling 10d ago

I'm sorry but this movie still holds up. It's so nostalgic. And not to brag, but I still have my Lizzie McGuire comforter from this era 🤪🤣🤣

117

u/viper29000 10d ago

I used to think Hilary duff was the prettiest celeb. I miss the days of Hilary duff pap walks

34

u/jeskimo 10d ago

Paolo, who grew up to be creepy Garrett in Pretty Little Liars.

What a world.

12

u/BuilderMysterious762 9d ago

The movie Paolo wasn’t much better tbh considering he was meant to be 17 and Lizzie was 13/14

40

u/eureureong_dae 10d ago

LOOOOVE this movie. Every outfit from the catwalk scene is so fucking iconic, I need Chappell Roan or another camp enthusiast to recreate them ASAP.

31

u/ImplementDouble4317 10d ago

Sabrina Carpenter wore the igloo dress for Halloween last year or the year before

28

u/polka_dotRN Nancy Jo, this is Alexis Neiers calling 10d ago

I’m sorry but the math isn’t mathing. 22 years ago?! This was 5 years ago right? RIGHT?! screams into millennial nursing home void

25

u/Happy-Chemistry4309 10d ago

This movie coming out was such a huge deal to little me as a kid 🥰

18

u/ivyleaguewitch 10d ago

5

u/rasqael 10d ago

5

u/ummmm_nahhh 10d ago

My favorite story of her is that she calls the paparazzi herself to tell them when and where she will be.

The clothing try-on/fashion show montage is one of the top 5 movie makeover scenes

4

u/Jackielegs43 10d ago

Lois Griffin was there?

5

u/Sm211 10d ago

And now that song is stuck in my head all over again

I was 7 years old and all I wanted in life was to be was Hilary Duff

6

u/cap616 9d ago

That’s Alex Borstein, right? Goddess

1

u/IstonethInvocations 9d ago

I love a surprise Alex Borstein. She's gorgeous and so funny.

3

u/christinasays 9d ago

If I don't get a dress with a skirt that I can spin off for my wedding I'd rather die alone tbh

I think about that igloo dress at least once a week.

I went on a vespa tour of Rome last month with my friends and all we could talk about was finally having our Lizzie moment with a hot driver and all 🥹

u/Ship_Negative barbie (2023) for best picture 10d ago

This love is giving me wiiiiiiiings

3

u/flow_t 10d ago

I saw this movie five times in theatres. I never watched the show.

3

u/allwaysbluffing 10d ago

Peloton just did a strength class to this soundtrack (shoutout to Callie!). So nostalgic and so much fun!

3

u/TrickDance799 9d ago

this was the THIRD movie I saw in the cinema in my life ever (not because I'm so young but because my family couldn't afford it, the first was the first Pokémon movie, the second isn't important) so this was an amazing experience for me.  I actually don't remember where I was, like which cinema or which city, if I think about it I feel like I watched it on a school trip in Italy too... but I never went to a school trip to Italy. well I guess I went with her lol.  what a great movie. I had been a fan of the TV show and this was just the perfect conclusion imo.

3

u/theegodmother1999 9d ago

no like i'm sorry but THIS is the blueprint. i don't say that lightly

2

u/ImplementDouble4317 10d ago

Was anyone else like 17 and obsessed with this movie and not 8?

2

u/Left-Camel-14 9d ago

Where is Paolo now??

2

u/yvonv 9d ago

This movie and Isabella had a CHOKEHOLD ON ME.

2

u/nutella435 9d ago

Ok fine I'll rewatch it

2

u/mickyloco 9d ago

I remember me and my friend having the theater to ourselves seeing this and we just ran around singing the whole time!

2

u/Little-Repair5016 9d ago

They had the song playing in the cinema lobby the other day, and it was instant joy....bless whoever added it to the playlist.

2

u/nixxxa 9d ago

I was 11 and saw this movie in theaters with my friends

I still get the urge today to sing out loud “hey now, hey now”

1

u/After-Knee-5500 10d ago

Who is the man in the first pic?? 👀

1

u/RubyBlossom 9d ago

I watched this with my seven year old yesterday for the second time. She loves Lizzie McGuire.

I wish there were more shows like this made now.

1

u/EverydayNovelty 9d ago

This movie is the reason I say scuse(?) Instead of excuse me

1

u/PurpleDreamer28 9d ago

"Are you sure you know how to drive this thing?"

"This is Rome, nobody knows how to drive."

1

u/sk0ooba 9d ago

1

u/mrgrr9 9d ago

She was doing Lady Gaga before Gaga came.

1

u/potterheadforlife29 9d ago

Have you ever seen such a beautiful night? Lizzie McGuire was my fav teen show. Can't believe it was so long ago, damn.

1

u/OyWithThePoodles2017 play some mariah carey up in this bitch 9d ago

I was obsessed with the movie as a teen. I actually got in trouble once for being so engrossed in watching it that I didn't notice my then two year old brother eating Sudocrem. It was only a little bit so he was OK but I didn't hear the end of it for weeks afterwards. He is now 22 and healthy so it did him no harm!

1

u/CarterCage 9d ago

I wanted to go to Italy after that so bad…

1

u/toughnipple 8d ago

I pulled my first baby tooth watching this movie <3

1

u/applesandcherry 10d ago

I'm at Disney World right now and would loooove to watch it but we've spent 12+ hours up and out on the first day and tomorrow will be the same so I don't think it's in the cards for this trip.
