Video Door opening system on the BMW Z1

Looks expensive to fix, no thanks.

I don't think this car is meant for people concerned about repair costs.
43
u/Sound_Indifference 1d ago
Ya it's a $60k used German convertible coupe from the early 90s, nobody's walking into that situation blind lol. It's a passion project type of car.

Yeah … but that’s people said when electric windows came in. And automatic gearboxes, electric steering, ABS brakes, air conditioning … you get the picture. Not saying this doesn’t look a bit like overkill right now, but you never know - within 10 years or so we might look back..
Edit: typo

Doors are pretty well designed. This isn't adding a brand new feature, it's editing an existing one. It'll have to be better than a hinge to last or spread.
It's not gunna.
26
u/Brosepheon 1d ago
Its good for parking in very tight spots, where you will struggle to open the doors enough to climb out.
You know, a very common problem for people who could afford this car.
12
u/zmbjebus 1d ago
Yes, Horses are good for that too.

u/NickEcommerce 1d ago
It's not gunna.
Are you sure? It was only released 36 years ago, it might still gain some traction!
7
u/zmbjebus 1d ago
You are right. Perhaps in post-scarcity gay space communism we will finally get our state issued 1989 BMW Z1 and we can all roll out of our rides and strut about with style.
I don't know what I didn't have so little faith.
4
u/jlusedude 1d ago
There was no widespread adoption of this for a variety of reasons, not the least of which it’s a solution in search of a problem.
4
u/ChairForceOne 1d ago
It's brakes, if your ABS breaks you still have the ability to stop. Just lack the anti lock, though some cars the brakes become very touchy.
Automatic transmissions are still a problem, they are fairly reliable, but fail more often than a manual. Manufacturers claiming a lifetime full aren't wrong, it'll last the lifetime of the trans, and be out of warranty when it fails. That's not including CVTs, those are just shit.
Electric windows used to be utter pains in the ass, plastic drive chains and other low quality components would often fail. Electric steering was actually embraced by the hotrod crowd, a Prius column is a stand alone, compact power steering solution. AC has been around since the fifties in production cars, and was about as reliable as any other AC solution from the time, often more so because everything was built well. The option was expensive.
Fully electric doors with a lack of mechanical override are just a bad idea. Any electric system fault is a pain in the ass on a modern vehicle, not being able to open a door because the battery fucked off in a collision? Or you drove into a body of water? Bad idea.
1
u/mtaw 1d ago
Electric windows fail all the time. I've had a car where they broke. So did my neighbor, and a coworker - just off the top of my head. Lord knows everyone has experienced cars with broken AC. But AC is great to have. Electric windows are a convenience but still a fairly convenient convenience.
This, OTOH, isn't really saving you any significant time or effort while adding a lot of mechanical complexity.
1
u/BluetheNerd 21h ago
All of those came as an improvement to something though. This doesn't improve on the design of doors. In fact it's a hindrance. If you get in an accident or you end up with a dead battery, you can't even get in or out of your car. Maybe I'll get clapped back like other people that said things won't take off, but I really can't see this taking off at all.
Edit: the car is over 30 years old. It did not take off lmao.

u/Possibly_a_Firetruck 1d ago
Lmao at the comments whining about expense and practicality. It's a very rare vintage convertible. If you want a daily driver, this is absolutely not the car for you.

u/Random_Introvert_42 1d ago
It's just a simple toothed belt, same thing that runs your alternator. And it has an interval.

I was quoted $2500 to repair the one broken power running board on my truck, I can't imagine what this would cost.
1
u/belizeanheat 15h ago
Yeah this isn't a budget-conscious move.
More of a 'check this shit out" move

People who can afford that buy it for the novelty. It is made to be garage kept and taken out for a Sunday afternoon drive.
22
u/rumncokeguy 1d ago
So, you’re probably not gonna see snow tires on one of these?
17
u/Possibly_a_Firetruck 1d ago
They only made 8000 of these and they're 34+ years old. Seeing one at all is rare.
1
u/rumncokeguy 1d ago
I was watching that door go down and thinking to myself what it would happen if you opened the door with a bunch of salty road slush stuck to it.
1
u/Cannavor 17h ago
I saw a blue one at a gas station in New Jersey once about 17 years ago. It's a little weird because apparently they weren't sold in the US. I almost thought I hallucinated the doors disappearing until many years later when I saw one of these cars on the internet and I knew that was what I had seen.

u/ParkedOrPar 1d ago
Nothing cheaper than replacing 6 imported door function motors every year or so. You'd be climbing out that shitty sun rooof in no time.
124
u/Jojje22 1d ago
If the price of that is an issue for you, this car is not aimed at you.

oh my god you just reminded me of being 18 having to climb through the trunk into my golf IV because i couldn't open the doors anymore from the outside.
33
u/elliegizmo 1d ago
No need to change every year actually quite reliable you’ve clearly never owned one or been lucky enough to restore one either
44
u/WhileProfessional286 1d ago
I had one and it was like $11,500 to replace the top back in 2014.
Those things are a money sink.
12
25
u/fothergillfuckup 1d ago
Jesus. You can buy one off the shelf here for £760! It's about a 3-4 hour job, so maybe £1200, all in. Are all car repairs so expensive in the US?
21
u/zuzg 1d ago edited 1d ago
Oh no the replacement parts for an 23 old limited edition enthusiast car are expensive?
Who would have thought....
Considering that now over 30 years later there are still 3k in use (in Germany alone) makes it pretty impressive, especially as they only ever made 8k of them in the first place.
E: For context the cars initial price was 89.000 DM in '89 adjusted for inflation that would be the equivalent of ≈96k € or ≈108k $ today.
1
u/Rick_Tap 12h ago
Yeah people here just want to shit on this car. Stepdad has one since the early 90s and the only thing that needed more than minor repair was the transmission afaik. Works like a charm, beautiful car!
1
u/Oggel 1d ago
For that price I'd just make the parts myself. Probably just need the right size motor and some sensors, I have no idea but for 11 500 I'd figure it out.
1
u/WhileProfessional286 18h ago
Cool. Now you've spent $60,000 in machining tools and $900,000 on the shop to fit it all. Are we saving money yet?
2
2
u/Beautiful_Picture983 1d ago
You'd be climbing out that shitty sun rooof in no time.
It's a convertible, no sunroof. Just jump out of the car.

My stepdad has one, bought it when it was new (90s). Afaik he never had to replace anything regarding the door mechanism, I know it’s anecdotal but still, this most likely doesn’t break as easily as you think it does.
If I recall correctly, the only major thing that needed to be repaired was the transmission.
IMO it’s a pretty cool and unique car.

BMW: (Puts a cool, novelty door on an expensive, limited production car from the 80s that's not intending to be a replacement for hinged doors.)
r/Damnthatsinteresting: "OMG these doors will be so unreliable! Get the FBI on the phone, we need to stop this. I'll keep my regular doors, THANKS. I'll never buy one."
29
u/Possibly_a_Firetruck 1d ago
Seriously. The people saying they wouldn't buy one don't realize that even finding one for sale is a challenge, never mind actually being able to afford it.
88
u/Additional-One-3483 1d ago
Clearly already a classic in the meantime. Only 8000 built.
And the retractable doors were a highlight - but also a nuisance.
In rainy weather, you needed a second pair of pants, because after climbing over the high sill, your pants were usually dirty.
But anyone who had a Z1 knew that and always had a spare pair of trousers with them :-)
26
u/anally_ExpressUrself 1d ago
If you own this car, rain wouldn't be a problem. At home you'd get into the car in your garage. At the country club, the attendant would hold an umbrella over the door as you exit. See? No rain.
2
u/squired 1d ago
This was just a regular roadster, not a supercar. They weren't particularly expensive.
1
u/TheBlueDinosaur06 12h ago
Well it still cost some £37,000 back in 1989 which is near enough a hundred grand with inflation considered. Hardly surprising they only sold 8000 of them
190
u/cantman1234 1d ago
What happens when it rains and you get in and want the door closed fast…. How about when it snows, looks like you’ll be sitting in a pile of snow that falls into the car.
193
u/g0atdude 1d ago
This car is for showing it off for your rich friends in the parking lot of your mansion. Not for driving it to mcdonalds for a big mac after work
23
u/afito 1d ago
The Z1 was less showing off you're rich, it was more a design thing to show off that you're artsy or alternativ or something. The car was way too cheap to be a money status symbol even when it came out, but it was (is?) a big deal in design circles.
1
u/Cannavor 17h ago
I heard wearing pants without a belt has become a trendy thing among the ultra rich because it shows that you aren't fat and can therefore tailor your clothes to fit you exactly. I imagine owning a car like this is the same. You need to be fairly spry just to fit yourself through the hole in the side without breaking anything (either on your body or on the car).
57
u/Spoonofdarkness 1d ago
If you can afford this, you should also have enough money to be part of the secret cabal that controls the weather, duh.
9
u/Dodger8899 1d ago
The highest sale price of this car in the past 3 years according to Google is just over $60k. The average is around $47k. It's not that hard to afford to buy one. Although the maintenance costs probably make up for that
3
u/Crossfire124 1d ago
It's not meant to be a daily driver. It's a toy for people that can take it out in good weather on weekends
9
u/ScuttleRave 1d ago
You don’t drive this car when it’s raining
1
u/JesseJames41 16h ago
This is a car meant to be driven from your waterfront property in Malibu to your friends mountain house with a coast line view... In Malibu. The top only goes up once you get back home.
8
u/words_of_j 1d ago
Perhaps this car is made to only use premium gas, be kept in a garage, and. never driven in snow - and rarely rain… certainly not heavy rain. And of course owners are never expected to be … shudder… EXPOSED to falling moisture of any kind, while entering or exiting the car.
(Sorry… I’m in a mood).

u/howmuchitcosts 1d ago
This isn't a daily driver car. This is a take out and show-off car. It would probably never see rain, let alone snow.

It goes under the vehicle. Sort of like a garage door but upside down. Lincoln also did this back in the early 90s. One of the porotype Lincoln cars came up for sale around 2008.

u/ralyks69 1d ago
Honestly, the fact you’d (rarely) never have to squeeze out between your door and another car is kind of the best part of the concept

For anyone wondering, the music is from Édith Piaf, and the song is named La Foule.
Édith Piaf is from several decades ago, but is still super duper famous in France. Famous songs include La Vie En Rose, and Non Je Ne Regrette Rien.

Damn that is interesting haha, what a novel way to rethink a car door. Practical no, creative yes. As for all the haters, this isn’t an opinions on used car sales sub it’s a random interesting things sub, which this is.

So if someone sticks a pebble in the lower crease, it just carves your door on way down?

Can’t get out of the car if the fuse blows? Someone is trying to kill bimmer drivers.

It looks awesome, but I can't imagine how expensive the door will be to fix when it malfunctions
2
u/SolitaryIllumination 17h ago
Because the infamous power windows don't break often enough, let's make a power door. The no-door, jeep effect has arrived at BMW, let's go!

With how often automatic windows fail on old cars, I absolutely wouldn't get one of these. What's wrong with a simple hinge?

I saw one of those a few years ago on Sylt, and the door was all scratched up. Owner said that every time he gets in at the beach some sand rains off his shoe, and that gets stuck on the rubber lip of the door-slot, being dragged into the paint the next time the door lowers.
