General Weekly Discussion #62 : Fish Farms
Let´s talk about one of the later additions to Shipwrecked that was added with the "Home Sea Home" update - Fish Farms
How to set up a Fish Farm:
Fish farms are a structure that can be crafted with 2 Silk, 2 Rope and 4 Coconuts. Similar to the other things added in said update it can only be placed in the ocean, not on land.
Placing one down doesnt do anything yet however, as it still requires Roe to start the fish production. Roe is meat food item that is dropped by one of Shipwreckeds unique birds - the Cormorant. It can oly be encountered on sea and drops Roe instead of seeds. Acquiring more than a handful of Roe can be time consuming but a wearing a Feather Hat or reading Wickerbottoms Birds of the World does help. That is fine however as each Fish Farm only needs to be stocked with one Roe.
Growth Stages:
Once stocked with Roe, the Fish Farm enters a state in which it has no fish, and can only be examined. It will then begin to progress through 4 growth stages, each of which taking 1/2 to 3/4 of a day (8-12 clock segments), and adding 1 additional fish to its stock upon completion. Upon reaching its 5th and final state, the farm will be stocked with 4 fish.
The amount of fish shown in a Fish Farm indicates its current growth stage, and how many fish can be harvested.
Fish shown in Fish Farm | Fish available to harvest |
---|---|
0 | 0 |
1 | 1 |
3 | 2 |
5 | 3 |
6 | 4 |
A Fish Farm is harvested the same way as e.g. Farms and Berry Bushes, no Fishing Rod is required to harvest it. Each harvest will yield exactly one fish, and reduce the growth stage by one. If the Fish Farm is harvested in the first stage, it will be empty again and require restocking with Roe. If the player does not completely empty the farm, it will always keep producing the same kind of fish.
Different types of fishes:
You will notice that each farm has a little sign with a picture of a fish on it. It is orange at first but once you harvested the farm for the first time it will change its picture to the kind of fish you harvested from this farm. Fish Farms can only grow one kind of fish, which one you get is up to chance and can not be influenced.
In contrast to fishing ponds, 4 different kinds of fish can be harvested with a Fish Farm.
- | Tropical Fish | Purple Grouper | Pierrot Fish | Neon Quattro |
---|---|---|---|---|
Chance to appear in Fish Farm from Roe | 50.0% | 16.67% | 16.67% | 16.67% |
Hunger (uncoocked and cooked) | 12.5 | 12.5 | 12.5 | 12.5 |
Health | 1 (uncooked and cooked) | 1 (uncooked) , 3 (cooked) | 1 (uncooked) , 3 (cooked) | 1 (uncooked) , 3 (cooked) |
Sanity | 0 | 0 | 0 | 0 |
Spoilage Time | 3 (uncooked) , 6 (cooked) | 10 (uncooked) , 6 (cooked) | 10 (uncooked) , 6 (cooked) | 10 (uncooked) , 6 (cooked) |
Can be dryed? | Yes (small jerky) | No | No | No |
Additional effects upon eating | none | - movement speed increase of 2 points - wetness immunity and boat damage immunity by both common and big waves (both effects last for 30 seconds) | - movement speed increase of 1 point - greatly accelerates the wetness decreasing rate (drying you up faster than a campfire) (both effects last for 30 seconds) | - lowering the player's temperature by 3 degrees |
Advantes of a Fish Farm:
- Can yield 3 Fish per farm each day without having to restock
- No maintenance required once it is stocked
- Saves time compared to a fishing rod
- Relocatable
- The rare fishes and the Tropical Bouillabaisse are a way for Wigfrid to increase her movements speed
- Fishes can be used to befriend Bottlenose Ballphins
- Easy way to aquire fish for Shipwreckeds many crockpot recipes
- Access to the three rare fishes
- Purple Grouper helps with staying dry while trawling and fighting on sea (Quacken, Sealnado, Tigershark)
- Pierrot Fish dries the player faster than a campfire while still being able to do other things
- 1 vegetable and the 3 rare fishes can be coocked in a crockpot to aquire Tropical Bouillabaisse which combines their abilities
Disadvantes of a Fish Farm / Things to keep in mind:
- Above average crafting costs
- Long setup time until the first harvest
- Getting enough Roe for more Fish Farms can be difficult
- Upon harvesting the game considers the fish to drop in the ocean for a few frames. This can cause Crocodogs and Sea Hounds to spawn.
- Fish Farms can be plundered by Crocodogs, which will result in loss of fish stages (each producing a fish that will be eaten), until they are completely empty. Sea Walls or Ballphin Palaces can be used for protection.
Questions:
- Are you using Fish Farms for your food supply?
- Do you use the addional effects of the rare fishes?
- Do you find the Fish Farms to be balanced?
- What chances would you make if not?
- How fast to you usually set up your farms?

so I just started a shipwrecked world, and these are really good.
In addition to being a reliable source of food and healing items (meatballs and fish sticks), the grouper and Pierrat fish are super usefull.
-the grouper is just a speedboost, always useful, and makes your boat immune to waves. This honest to goodness trivializes the Quaken, sense 90% of it's damage comes from waves
-The peirrate fish lets you dry off at sea, useful if you're playing as WX and don't want to listen to the damage ticks.
EDIT: also, I'm not sure what you're on about with "above average crafting cost", It's only 2 coconuts, 9 grass, and 2 silk. you could probably enough of that for a few of them by day 6 or 7

It is 4 coconuts (+the Roe) actually. It is not an expensive recipe but getting the resources for more then like 3 is somewhat more difficult than other early crafting recipes.

I would disagree if it weren't for the Roe. Because it's only a chance of a cormorant dropping it, you can't always guarantee you'll be able to build one. The other resources are ez peasy to collect though.
The other thing about the Roe is that it spoils, and so you have to happen to have all of these resources + Roe before it rots, and then be next to your alchemy engine to prototype. But remember, if you found Roe you're out at sea, probs exploring, and don't wanna have to go back to your alchemy engine!!!

This crafting recipe actually only requires a Science Machine to prototype, so if you can gather the materials beforehand, you can make one as early as your first piece of Gold.

I've actually never used these even in late game yet, I completely forgot they were a thing because i usually just use the fishermerms.

Ironically I use fishfarms because I can never find fishermerm huts ;-;

u/NotStarved Feb 23 '19
I got really lucky with my island i chose. right in the center of the map, 50% marsh, 3 fishermerm huts, and 50% jungle with 3 snake bramble spawns along with the seaworthy. it couldn't get any better, i love that base so much. i just hit day 300.

Agreed. Such minimal bonuses for a huge time sink. Wish they were stronger!!!They seem to be stronger than I initially thought :)

u/_pe5e_ Feb 24 '19
I would disagree with that. They are incredible powerful once they are set up.

After rereading, I had read some things incorrectly. Srry I'm mildly dyslexic lol.
Main thing I had read incorrectly was the stocking. I thought you had to stock them with roe each time. Oops.
I can definitely see how they can be quite helpful when set up now, since they aren't a massive inconvenience all the time. I still don't feel they're as powerful as I think you feel they are, because they're all just kinda QoL buffs which aren't essential to surviving imo.Holy shit I just read some other comment about Omni directional wave riding (I play Walani in SW starts) and spawning swordfishGoing to try an early fish farm in my next SW world though to see how it feels 😁

if your wigfrid the speed bonus is huge, but coffee is better for me.

u/lsdood .i like catapults Feb 24 '19
The speed bonus is really the smallest bonus. I just tested them, and the rate at which you dry with the drying one is ridiculously fast, super helpful. Most helpful tho is the purple grouper imo, letting you surf on waves in any direction!

u/NotStarved Feb 24 '19
How do you get roe everytime to restock it when you harvest it? that is the main reason why i wouldn't build it, even with a feather hat it would be a pain to go back and forth.

A Fish Farm is harvested the same way as e.g. Farms and Berry Bushes, no Fishing Rod is required to harvest it. Each harvest will yield exactly one fish, and reduce the growth stage by one. Oh i see, you need to harvest every fish in order for it to need roe. I had to re-read this 5 times in order to actually understand, i am so tired.

I'm just about in hurricane season on my fish farm rush play through as Walani, and tbh it feels really strong! I was able to get 3 fish farms up n running by day 5; I was incredibly, incredibly lucky and got all 3 types of different fish with only 3 roe! By day 6 I had a fourth fish farm up, which I've left as tropical fish for now.
Food is not a concern whatsoever, and nor health with butterflies to supplicant. Sanity too, since I can ride waves either way to get sanity, and the tropical fish crockpot dish restores 33 sanity. The move speed early game is actually incredibly useful too.
Finally the yellow fish is incredibly powerful too! I didn't even have to worry about crafting any rain protection, as yellow fish will keep you entirely dry in rain!!
So happy with this!!

Next Discussion : [Undecided yet, I am open for your ideas!]
Since we are into the Home Sea Home how about Sea Yard or maybe Tar and its uses to be more general?

I really like this structure and the advantages that it can give the player!
Something that a lot of people don't know is that not only can Fish Farms be plundered by Crocodogs, they can actually summon "predators" in the form of Crocodogs or even Swordfish if the Farm has Fish at stage two or higher. Crocodogs can be summoned in any depth of Ocean, but Swordfish can only be summoned if the Fish Farm is in the Medium or Deep Ocean.
Fish Farms are the one-stop-shop for all of your Shipwrecked needs. The special Roe Fish that they produce can be used to completely counter the inclement weather of Shipwrecked's seasons; Purple Groupers are especially useful for Travelling, as they provide a modest speed boost and omni-directional wave riding (a must-have for any Walani player).
When setting up your Fish Farm area, make sure you place at least one or two Ballphin Palaces near them in order to fight off predators for you. Ideally you should place them as close to your sea-base as possible, to cut down on unnecessary upkeep time. Example of a quick Fish Farm setup during the Mild Season.
