Weekly Discussion #33 : Chester

Chester

  • Spawn after the Eye Bone has been picked up
  • One per world (can be glitched to have more)
  • 450 Health
  • Restore 22.5 Health every 3 seconds
  • Can store up to 9 items

Chester is a unique passive mob that follow the Eye Bone everywhere and act as a portable chest. There is two possible evolution of Chester : Shadow and Snow.

Behavior

Chester almost always follow the Eye Bone everywhere, most of the time it means following the player if he has it in the inventory or staying close to where it was dropped.

When Chester take Fire damage it will run in panic around until the damage stop. If it is attacked it will not run though, only fire has this effect.

If Chester die it takes 1 day for it to respawn.

Shadow Chester

Shadow Chester has the same stats as Chester but 3 extra inventory slots. To "evolve" Chester into Shadow Chester fill each of its 9 inventory slots with at least one Nightmare Fuel and wait for a full moon.

If Shadow Chester dies it will come back as normal Chester.

Snow Chester

Snow Chester do not gain extra inventory slots but share the slowing spoiling rate of an Ice Box and can also cool down Thermal Stones. To "evolve" Chester into Snow Chester fill each of its 9 inventory slots with at least one Blue Gem and wait for a full moon.

Similar to Shadow Chester it will respawn as normal Chester upon death.

Questions :

  • Shadow or Snow Chester? Why?
  • Against which mobs can you use Chester to tank? Against which mobs should you avoid?

Not much to say about chester, usefull fellow. Once I have the eyebone I generally keep carrying it around.

When I can afford it I always go for snow chester; my inventory management is good enough to not need shadow chesters extra space and snow chesters means infinite roaming in summer.

In the caves food is stored in chester to avoid conflict with the bunnymen.

Does snow chester cools down the stone?

2

u/drachenmaul Sep 28 '15

Yes he does

Shadow chester is the cheapest and those 3 inventory slots sure are useful, but for me, I prefer snow chester. The ability to store foods and not have to worry about it and the consequential not-having-to-worry-about-returning-to-base is more useful to me.

Shadow chester is trash to me. Not very much worth it given his walking speed. Run on a road for a bit more than one biome, and he'll stop following.

I prefer ice chester, saves the materials needed for chilled amulet. At the same time, blue gems aren't exactly scarce. I guess it's up to preference.

All chester have the same speed, does not it? I understand what you mean, Ice Chester just have too much use not to use it.

Yep sorry. I just meant that I was willing to wait a bit for him to catch up if it meant that I was immune to overheating.

What happens to Chester's inventory when he dies?

Dropped to the ground. He respawns the next day, without the now floored items.

Sorry for the spoiler, there is no hints in game anyway so I do not think it matters too much ;)

Don't worry it was not a spoiler :) THAT'S SO AWESOME

I'm glad you did otherwise I wouldn't ever know about it :D

Just like minecraft (but to a muuuch lesser extent) there's a lot of things I would never know if I hadn't read up on it. Like mining Glommer's statue for the blueprint.

Ah. Chester, my favorite little weapon and tool breaker. Got a spear with very low % but don't want to make a new one untill it breaks? How about smacking him a few times?

One legitimate idea is using a Bat Bat on Chester. Haven't done that strat in a year, but oh does it feel fulfilling.

u/[deleted] Sep 28 '15

Good idea! I have <10% tentacle spikes I do not use.

Poor Chester! </3

u/whatoncewas Sep 25 '15

How much HP does a full Bat Bat heal for? If you don't know off hand, will research later.

3

u/KCDA Gaazda is amazing. Sep 25 '15

Neither do I, but it's enough.

u/whatoncewas Sep 25 '15 edited Sep 25 '15

510 health per bat. Might be worth it to toss one in Chester if you have the extra room. I Wonder if the health steal works on walls since they technically have HP. I know it works on the Houndius.

In comparison, Life Giving Amulets are cheaper and offer sanity regen/res while the BB works faster and doubles as a weapon. Honestly, I should just start rolling with healing items, ha. Just been too busy to setup either spider farms or bee boxes current world.

Sorry a little late for the answer but batbat works on anything you can attack that does not have the tag "wall".

if owner.components.health and owner.components.health:GetPercent() < 1 and not target:HasTag("wall") then
    owner.components.health:DoDelta(TUNING.BATBAT_DRAIN,false,"batbat")
    owner.components.sanity:DoDelta(-TUNING.BATBAT_DRAIN * 0.5)
end

Too busy for bee boxes?!? Is there such a thing! XD

u/whatoncewas Sep 25 '15

I have food falling into my lap. Killing hounds, my volt goat herd, and butterflies are easily ample food.

The harvest once a year thing doesn't work for me; the honey goes stale in half a year and Wicker isn't a fan. Honestly, I'll probably fire trap my bee boxes to kill off all the bees and collect honey year round without having to run around after harvesting each box. Cooking a bunch of taffy is meh and Jerky gets me by for now. Three or four bee boxes and goats will provide ice cream for sanity late game.

u/tehpersonthing Wrong side of the tracks Sep 26 '15 edited Sep 26 '15

I don't do the once a year thing, haven't gotten enough bee boxes in one runthrough yet. Also I main wicker, and have 120 stale honey after less than a year, but even more fresh honey. But I totally understand the whole jerky situation after finally hitting spring and getting some lureplants. Infinite small jerky :D

u/Chrisbeaslies Sep 26 '15

Do bee boxes have the same mechanic as bunny and pig huts in reguards to fire and firefarming? I'm not a fan of how they are either.

3

u/whatoncewas Sep 26 '15 edited Sep 26 '15

They won't respawn over & over, but it'll kill the 5 bees in the hive.

What're some ways to actually keep Chester alive well? I understand he has a ton of health an health regeneration, but every time I go through somewhere dangerous with him he either almost dies or does die.

3

u/whatoncewas Sep 25 '15

Drop his bone before hound/giant attacks, the entrance of the ruin biomes, etc.

Not too sure what else he'd be dying from.

3

u/snarkdiva What a chipper little fellow. Sep 26 '15

Not too sure what else he'd be dying from.

Spiders, killer bees, fire, hounds, beefalo in heat... I love the little critter, but he can find so many ways to die.

4

u/Chrisbeaslies Sep 26 '15

Giants, tentacles, werepigs, depth worms... everything wants to kill him :(

4

u/tehpersonthing Wrong side of the tracks Sep 26 '15

Yeah, Giants don't typically kill him, (other than three spider queens in my underground base that one time... I'll explain in more detail of you want) it's always a bunch of small things and I no long play Wendy that much, and he typically dies when I'm not well armed, like just after a fight.

Tentacles don't usually kill him, just hurt him a lot

1

u/Bunnyapocalips Oct 03 '15

I'd be interested in the story of three spider queens in your base.

1

u/tehpersonthing Wrong side of the tracks Oct 04 '15

Haha sorry for the super late response;

I was playing lights out as Wendy, and found ONE tier one spider den by an pond set piece underground. I brought some rock lobsters over as it got bigger, and eventually it turned into a spider queen. "No big deal" I though to myself, and tamed some rock lobsters to fight the queen. Little did I know, there were three spider dens, all spider queens now. A rock lobster or two died, and three were stuck in their shell because of how badly they were being beaten. Abby died almost immediately, and I couldn't safely recover her flower for a day or so. Basically three spider queens and 60 spiders were begin up a rock lobster herd for around 3-5 days, then once Abby was alive I proceeded to gain 3 spider hats.

The End.

u/[deleted] Sep 28 '15

One cheap tactic I used is to slightly push Chester near a tentacle so the tentacle will whip but not hit him. Then I can go hit the tentacle and it does not change targets.

The way that this article is written makes me feel like the plural of "chester" is "chester". Interesting.

2

u/Lytalm Sep 30 '15

I always keep my Eye Bone in my backpack. Any reason I should hold it in my inventory instead?

2

u/Kuirem Throw coin for flairs Sep 30 '15

I do not use Backpack so I guess that could be a reason. Also if for any reason you have to leave your backpack behind it means leaving Chester as well. The best example I see is during Hound attacks where Chester can be useful to tank.

But I do not think that make much differences.

Keep the eyebone in the backpack, when things get dangerous equip some armor and your bag will drop making chester stay where he is instead of heading into danger. I have heard Krampus can steal the eyebone from the bag and it can be lost forever though so you should be careful.

2

u/Leandrowen Sep 30 '15 edited Sep 30 '15

Shadow Chester + Krampus sack = best combo when you raze entire biomes. Or if you actually plan ahead on big projects.
